Sometimes, I wish I had the heart to tell him. Sometimes I wish I never knew him at all. He’s so sweet- kind, gentle. You’d never know what he’s been through after a few hours of talking, maybe even just sitting. He had a bad life before high school. Work and parents, the “standard” placed upon him since they knew he was alive in her stomach. He said it was tough, but he was tougher. I wish he came back. After high school, he just sort of… disappeared. Well- he never really “disappeared” for me, I texted him every day, after all. I could hear his voice when he responded back. It was always that same gentle, lullaby-like rumble in his chest. It made me feel like I was talking to him, face to face. I finally got to see him- after what felt like years. 8, to be exact. His eyes were almost lifeless. His smile - the one I knew and savored - gone. Replaced with a ghost of what once was full of joy. There were heavy eyebags under those eyes. Small chapping on those full lips I dreamed and daydreamed of kissing, just once. “Tired?” “Yeah, just a little bit.” “From what?” “Work.” After that, I invited him to stay at my house. He had lost his house to a fire- one of those billowing ones that makes the back of your head scream that if it doesn’t stop now it’ll never stop. He was scared of fire after that. I couldn’t blame him. I’m scared of bugs. He worked at home. Though, he’d go to an office about every two days. Every time he came back it was late. The latest I think was three. He’d fall asleep on the couch those days, and then wake right back up at five like he had rested a good 7 or 8 hours. Today he had an off-day, a rare occasion. “Why did you never call?” I don’t think he was ready for that question. He… sort of stiffened on his bed before looking up at me, those almost lifeless eyes showing off… fear. “What’re you talking about?” “I asked if you wanted to call, and you’d say no or have an excuse.” “I… I don’t remember that.” “It’s okay, I figured it was because you didn’t like my voice an-” “I love your voice.” His tone made me flinch back a little, that and the hard, determined glare in his sunken eyes. “I love your voice than your mother.” I bit my lip a little. He was probably just saying that. It didn’t really matter to me before, but it did now. I dropped the topic before I probably should’ve. Maybe, he would’ve stayed if I had kept going- see where that went. But I didn’t. And now? Now he’s dead. He left late that night to get groceries. I told him he didn’t need to, but he said something about needing to clear his head from “unwanted thoughts.” I’m scared to dwell on what those thoughts could’ve been of. A thief. Shoplifter maybe. Now killer. He tried to get the gun out of the damn man’s hands, and got a bullet straight through the chest. Why’d it have to be him? I’m… a liar. He’s alive. Attached to a machine, in a coma. How long has it been? Maybe… maybe two years now. I can’t live with myself, and now? All that repeats in my head is… Sometimes, I wish I had the heart to tell him. And sometimes, I wish I never knew him at all. {Just a small lil thing I wrote. None of it's real for me personally, but for the people who can relate, if every single detail is the same as you remember it, I'm here for you. Please, don't do something you can't undo. It won't be better if you're gone, because what if he wakes up? No matter what, someone will be there to love you. You might not be able to see them-- heck, you can't even see me, but I love you. Okay? You matter.}
