Oboe Duet: L'Enfant et les Sortilèges (Ravel)
Переглядів 6292 роки тому
What a blow! And test of endurance! Here's the first five lines of Ravel's L'Enfant et les Sortilèges. The first oboe part slurs up to high F# a few times and playing this throughout multiple times can be taxing. This excerpt is the beginning until 3 measures before rehearsal 2 (half the excerpt). Very beautiful and it has been way too long since I explored this piece of oboe music that isn't p...
Reed-making at Oboerific Reeds! •Watch Me Scrape an Oboe Reed•

Let's go through my process when scraping a blank into a Day 1 Reed! We will cover knife-scraping technique, anatomy of the oboe reed, general thicknesses of a finished oboe reed, and see how many clips and scrapes it really takes to get a reed to vibrate. #oboe #reedmaking #oboereeds #coranglais #hautbois
Fulfilling a HUGE Order at Oboerific Reeds!

Today I finished a very large order of 15 Student Oboe Reeds. In this video, I'll take you through my process of the final day before a reed leaves my studio- including soaking, testing, tweaking, and finally packing up. I'll show you my reeds, up close and personal, including detailed pictures of their structure and tip openings. Enjoy!
Blank-a-palooza! •Watch Me Tie 100 Oboe Reeds in a Day•
Переглядів 1,4 тис.2 роки тому
If we're going to make a mess, why not make a HUGE mess? Away from my current at-home reed making station, I decided to build 100 blanks in a single day, from gouged cane. That's folding, shaping, tying, rough scraping, and clipping... Wooooh! I go through the tools that are necessary to complete such a job, and talk about my process when batch-blank-making. I hope you enjoy!

Orientalism is bad imo, but goddamn was Borodin fucking amazing at it. This melody and the one at the beginning of polovstian dances is just so delicious.
Beautiful❤
Beautiful. I particularly love Judith's sound.
Excellent presentation of the scraping process for an American reed. Very detailed with clear visual follow-through. My problem is that I just prefer the European (German) sound to the American, but to each her own.
Thank you for sharing, David! Lovely!
Thanks so much for having a listen, Katherine 😊
Lovely playing!
Great video. I wish we had videos like this many years ago. As an oboe player back in the late 1970's and my daughter playing oboe in the late 1990's & early 2000's I had a rough time using the book & VCR tape that was available in those days to help me make reeds. I had all the tools I needed, great blanks, shaped cane, cord, beeswax, & everything I needed. But I never could understand how the "instructor" got from "the blank", gradually scraping it into the perfect "American Scrape" reed that was shown in the book & VCR tape. Love your reed . . . Very good "crow" and shaping of the reed including uniform tip & symmetrical heart. Outstanding video. 🎉
Sounds divine!

So beautiful, thank you 🌺
Thank you!
Lovely vibrato and control, David. A wonderful love duet.... played it for wedding.... AH
I think that tomato wasn't ripe yet. Great job on the reeds! Happy Playing!
A delicious black plum tomato!
Very cool, I've always loved Borodin's works
The European scrape just seems sooooooo much easier and actually more accurate. So why us the American’ scrape? Thanks.
there should be a warning sign somewhere, too much reed making may seriously damage your health!
What shape for your cane do you use?
Mack++ is the shape!
Thanks! I gotta audition with this on oboe
update: I got in
I have a few questions, how does 100 reeds only last you a month and a half?? This seems like your are getting poor results with your reedmaking or do you sell them is that the reason? I make a reed a day and and rotate them, they usually can last 1/2 and orchestra season? Just very curious, not throwing shade
I have a reedmaking business!
@@oboerific now that totally makes sense! Good luck with your business, im curious what shape you most commonly use?
Excellent video. Looking for more of more finishing reeds.
Very nice! I’m sure your clients appreciate your attention to detail.
Excellent video!
Wonderful, thank you :)
You are a madman! I'm just learning to tie. How long does it take to get good?
Fascinating to see the art and amount of work involved in scraping an oboe reed. Another eye opening lesson.
Thank you Grant! It's a really all-encompassing lesson, and might be overwhelming for new reed-makers, but I will be uploading more in depth mini-lessons in the coming months.
That looked like a difficult endurance run. The more paced rate seems more sustainable. Entertaining and fun to watch.
It was okay in the beginning! I think 30 is a nice cap/day for my busiest times. That’s a morning, and then I still have time to scrape reeds and play in the afternoon.
That was educational and interesting, David. I like the old picture of you that must date to high school! If I ever need reeds, I know to get them from you.
Thanks Grant! And yes- I was sure a trend setter with that pre- Bieber cut 😂
What tremendous precision.
Amazing video!!! Congrats on tying so many blanks!!
Thanks Ron!
Sounds great, looks great, you're great!
You’re very kind!!
This is my alternate universe come to life. My favourite holiday song. It's such a happy melody. Thanks Vanbiesbrouck!
Beautiful!!
Vanbiesbrouck! You're so talented. Thanks for the serenade and the Christmas cheer.🎄🎁
Wow! You’re so Amazing! Great Song! I love your channel! I just started my own Flute UA-cam channel and would love for you to check it out!

Thank you! 😀😄
