All Things LAHSO (Land and Hold Short Operations)
Great presentation.
Thank you!
The best explanation!!!
Thank you!
Great thank you 🎉
Glad you enjoyed it!
Adding rudder in the same direction as the bank is not cross controlling. It is over-controlling. Over-controlling is skidding and skidding is dangerous. Cross controlling is slipping and slipping is not. And you don’t have a need to bank the opposite direction, if wings start to roll off, you rudder opposite direction. Ruddering to the outside is cross-controlling, rudder to the inside is not.
This is the way the maneuver is accomplished. You add excessive rudder pressure in the direction of bank (if done correctly) you will need to counteract the rolling tendency with opposite aileron (putting you in a cross-controlled situation). Where you have aileron one direction and rudder the opposite.
5-20 Airplane Flying Handbook states “a skidding cross-control stall is most likely to occur in the traffic pattern during a poorly planned and executed base-to-final approach turn. There may be an unrecognized tailwind component and higher ground speed on the base leg, which causes the pilot to turn late or with inadequate bank. The airplane overshoots the runway centerline, and the pilot attempts to correct by increasing the bank angle, increasing back elevator pressure, and applying excess rudder in the direction of the turn (i.e., inside or bottom rudder pressure) to bring the nose around further to align it with the runway. The difference in lift between the inside and outside wing will increase, resulting in an unwanted increase in bank angle. At the same time, the nose of the airplane slices downward through the horizon. The natural reaction to this may be for the pilot to pull back on the elevator control, increasing the AOA toward critical. Should a stall be encountered with these inputs, the airplane may rapidly enter a spin.” It then says that “During the turn the pilot should monthly apply excessive rudder pressure in the direction of the turn and hold the bank constant by applying opposite aileron pressure. At the same time, the pilot increases back elevator pressure to keep the nose from lowering. All of these control pressures should be increases until the airplane stalls. When the stall occurs, the pilot applies nose-down elevator pressure to reduce the AOA until the stall warning has been eliminated, removes the excessive rudder input and levels the wings, and adds power as needed to return to complete the recovery and return to the desired flight path.” WifiCFI is correct
Effectively a “Cross Control Stall” is a spin entry demonstration and should be treated as such. You’re demonstrating how important it is to maintain coordination during a turn as entering a spin at such a low altitude as base to final is perilous at worst and treacherous at best
@@Low_flyer skidding is by definition not cross controlled. It is over-controlled. The departure happens before the aileron is dropped in attempt to lift the wing because the wing drop is the departure by definition. A slipping stall is a cross-controlled stall, what the book call “cross-controlled” is really over-controlled with inappropriate attempt of aileron based recovery.
@@Low_flyer except you don’t need to maintain coordination, you need to specifically avoid skids. Slipping is completely safe.
👑Super cool! 👑
I would like to add to the Induced Drag reasoning: It is understood that this is mostly based off of wingtip vortices, with the air under coming around and hitting the top, thus creating the drag. At low speeds, this bleed air is coming around and banging directly into the top of the wing (high drag). As you go faster, by the time the air completes its circle up to the top, the wing has already moved beyond that point and the air doesn't completely hit the top of the wing (less drag). Therefore, higher speed equals less Induced drag, no angle of attack change needed.
Thanks for your simply explanation.

Good explanation. Greetings from Nobekaw, Ghana 🇬🇭
Damn good tip sir.
Total induce drag not only come from your wingtip vortices but also Aft lift (increase while you increases induce aoa) and vortices behind the trailing edge, all those 3 parts make your total induce drag.
