This was my 3rd trip out, and the boat and I are starting to get better aquatinted. I still had a bit of an interesting time coming back into the harbor, because it's pretty much a wind tunnel, and the wind kicked up to around 30mph right as I reefed the sails and switched to rowing mode. After some brief contact with a big metal harbor buoy, I made it in just fine - LOL.

If you're interested in seeing what the entire road looks like, I've included the entire distance in this video. I've made a few notes on some rocky and loose spots, but all in all it's a pretty easy and fun ride over to the Pingree Park Road (63E). I went home via Pennock Pass (Buckhorn Canyon) but you can also return via The Poudre Canyon which is about 10 miles down the road gong north from ...
Switzerland Trail, Gold Hill, Colorado

I enjoyed my first off road outing of the 2022 season with a trip across the Switzerland Trail. This 15ish-mile ride winds its way between Gold Hill, CO (just off Left Hand Canyon) and the Peak-to-Peak Highway near Ward. It used to be a narrow gauge railroad bed that carried supplies and ore between the nearby towns and mines. I found the trail to be relatively easy in most spots punctuated by ...

Just saw that you're registered for WA360. Looking forward to seeing the boat there. We'll be in a Montgomery 17. I'm in the middle of a Rowcruiser build but that one will have to wait until 2027.
Great stuff .
Hey Rob - I am having an Angus RowCruiser built. We are considering using the Hobie furling sails like you have. What do you think of them? Any issues?
@@stephenboudreau7992 yes, I love them if you can source the parts. The boat can be depowered very quickly which is great for where I sail and I'm assuming what I'll encounter in the NW for WA360 and R2AK. Is yours being built in Port Townsend? I spoke to a guy up there asking questions about my Hobie setup and I sent measurements and pictures.
Holy crap. That is moving. I saw angus sailing his with an autopilot. Think that’s a great idea. And your hobie system looks like another great idea.
I have the same Raymarine ST1000 autopilot, it's a total game changer for solo sailing. I can cook, make coffee, and adjust/fix stuff, all while continuing to sail.
I have a newer video up from a couple weeks ago, maybe not as fast as it was super gusty and I didn't want to go in the drink ua-cam.com/video/wx3VePyB9mM/v-deo.htmlsi=bfxJPthDCbX3FY42
Nice! Did you build this boat? Thanks!
Hi, thanks for the view. I didn't build the boat but purchased it this spring from the second owner. It was originally built by a boat builder from the Port Townsend Wooden Boat School. It's a beautiful design and the craftsmanship of the builders attention to detail can't be missed. If you want to learn more about the boat you can visit the boat designers website, there are two versions including a non-sailing kit and a sailing kit. This has an upgraded sail system from what is called for in the original design. angusrowboats.com/pages/sailing-rowcruiser
Thanks, Rob! @@bigmoocanoe
The hobie sail setup makes sense.
@@doclees11 I love it, you can depower very quickly as needed which is great when sailing in Colorado and Wyoming.
Fast🛷🤘
You are giving me ideas. I live on a river (house 50 feet off of river) with some rapids around the corner from the house. Also own a paddle board, I will have to try this out. Thanks for the idea.
You forgot steps 0 and 20 … shell out cash
Robert, so smooth brother!!!!!!

I think surfing means something different than you think it means
Hello can you tell us where. This surfing spot is exactly? We live in FT Collins and can't seem to find it
Cool video, never seen that before!
Never would've thought to do this. Looks fun!
Hey Rob, great work -- keep it up! A huge river surfer's ALOHA to you! riverbreak.com
Riverbreak Magazine Thanks for the encouragement, I working hard at it. I've been doing downriver stuff for a couple of years now but this little whitewater board is a whole new world for me.
Rob Bean Yeah, really excited to see you pioneering this wave. Would be interesting to see what it looks like at higher flows. Keep it up!
Rob, Glad to see you were out giving stand up a go at the USNWC. I just wanted to let you know that we teach ww SUP lessons. Our staff are some of the best around, feel free to call or come by to chat more. I already have a few tips that can help you out from watching the video. Hope to see you this season.
Hey, thanks for the comment Trey. I had an absolute blast at the USNWC! I have actually been there a couple of times now when I'm in town for business and look forward to another visit. I got that SUP back at the end of 2012 and it's been all over, even down to some surfing in Mexico with similar results as you saw in the video :). The day I SUP'd at your place was my first time on real whitewater and I would have definitely taken you up on a class, I was totally winging it but was doing pretty well by the end of the day. I think if I had kept a normal flat-water stance I probably would have been a bit more stable but that will be something to try on my next trip. I may be out in the summer and I'll reach back out for sure. Any quick advice based on what you saw would be appreciated, I live in Colorado and plan on doing some paddling down in Salida this summer. We have a tone of WW SUP out here.
Sounds like a fun hike!
I have a 1980 model I acquired. What's it worth in good shape?
Hi, I just saw your comment tonight, 7-months later of course :) Thanks for the note it was a great trip, very hard, but very rewarding. We have also raised another $6,000 for our Heifer International project and are so thankful for those who have supported us along the way with well wishes and good vibes. Were you guys coming down stream on the Colorado? We saw a few groups but it was a pretty lonely stretch of water heading upstream. Thanks again for the note.
7mph...not bad!
We saw you out there heading towards Potash. Very cool accomplishment.
nice:)
