Factory 1980 KW V-8 Cat, In-Cab Ride along Video
Shut down your silly songs and hear engine music!!!
nice thing about the big V8s was that they are soothing to the ears. The 855 Cummins was the same. The older I get, the more I appreciate those traits.
THE MIGHTY 3408 ROARS!!
That Kitty is puuuuring and sounding sweet. Damn I hated when that video ended.
Looks like this video was shot around Enumclaw or east of Puyallup.
Can I have one for Christmas Santa?
Here's another one would have been great without Elmer. I wanted to hear the truck.
Nice truck ashamed CAT is no longer building truck engines.
Y you had to mess the whole video up with music. Let the truck make the music.
That turbo ❤️❤️
I had a '81 W900-A as my first truck I loved it except fr the 36" sleeper. I started in '86 so the truck was still pretty new at least to me. I have a lot of fond moments in that truck
Rather have a pre electric kw with a cat than anything on the road. I once had a KW K100 with a 3406 ran NYC to Flagstaff AZ, then LA pickup pecans back to hunts point market and I could run front door most of the time, but that was my younger years when I was wild and free. Retired in 2014 after 44 years, but I still get the urge baut my now broken body won’t let me. Nothing like having to set home missing what you love, if I had the health to pass Dot health exams I’d still be slapping gears.
Everett Wilson I know how you feel, it sucks when your mind wants to do things and your body won’t let you
Deborah chesser it’s called prison.
This is a sweet truck! Mine has a 5x4 transmission
low life video.could have played some good old truckin music but you had to trash it out.
Love me some Elmer Fud Pucker...
Will some tell how you get a double od trans when the only double od is a pair of boxes or a turned around 13. When you turn a 15 od around it makes a direct trans. I hear 15 double od. It can't happen it not in the trans that I run. I have three
@Shannon Burns when both sticks are against the dash at 2100 you are really trucking very few have ever had a truck that fast. I own one at 2100 it's 100. It pulls 2400 in 15 od
Are v12 Detroit’s better
dilshan khaira in some ways ,the 12v71 was pretty popular and made good power,4-5 hundred hp. and very reliable, especially leaky and not great on fuel, they run forever and a hell of alot cheaper for parts than a V8 CAT, where i live you can buy a house,a decent one for what a rebuilt 3408 CAT cost ,from caterpillar, if you did most of the work yourself it would still cost atleast $20k .at best ,if i could afford one ,id love to have a 3408 CAT ,used to be the king of the road ,about 35 -40 yrs ago.. 3-5 mpg defending on various conditions, i dont know what this ones mpg is, but it gets the job done with ease ,sounds great doing it.
Richard Lycawolph Wolfe thanks Richard I don’t have any experience I just got my licence I’m 19 and looking at a truck that can be my build while I gain experience I was looking at a w900a with a 12v71 Detroit and a 5x4. I am very interested in this truck since it is a classic and the long hood it needs some work. I just want to ask u if you would know how much a rebuild on a Detroit would cost me or should I just swap a motor,if swap whts a good setup
Richard Lycawolph Wolfe also it seems like u no a lot about this trade can u tell me if a 1974 Kenny daycab can be turned into a 60’ sleeper
dilshan khaira ,add a sleeper ,ive not done that myself ever ,its been done on alot of trucks, cut the cab out around the rear window down to the floor.id assume, if frame rails are long enough ,made need extended ..im not really experienced in this aspect of work..
detroit 12v71 na push over 450hp stock
i love it ,always wanted one .
SWEET, SOUNDS GREAT. THANK YOU FOR THE VIDEO .
Hugh Wolfe yes 3408. V8 cat with same displacement per cylinder as 3406
Actually, the 3406 had a 6.5 inch stroke while the 3408 and 3412 had a 6 inch stroke. So the v8 and v12 engines didn't have the same displacement per cylinder as the inline six.
frazzledude your correct, that makes more sense to me,the other way ,the math didnt add up right, number of cylinders and amount of displacement per each .i heard the 3408 in some road going forms made up to 600 hp .
3408 did NOT have same displacement per cylinder as 3406. While they, and the 3412, shared the 5.4" bore, the 3408 and 3412 had a 6.0" stroke while the 3406 had 6.5" stroke. 3406=893 cubic inches, 3408=1,099 and 3412=1,649 c.i. Ironically, today's C-18 is a 3406E/C-15 with a 5.7" bore and 7.2" stroke = 1,102 CUBES. With marine engine camshaft and various fuel system and turbocharger mods, they can crank out 1,000 hp all day long! You couldn't RELIABLY do that with a 3408 because they had a weak crankshaft with unique offset rod journals.
Anthony Forret i agree, ive heard lots of bad about crankshaft breaking in the 3408s ,i dont know if CAT Ever fpund a solution for this problem or not, they're discontinued for a quite a number of yrs aren't they ,still have one remaned by CAT, i know they are nolonger going to supply truck engines, for road going trucks, just the Marine and industrial. share, the same basic engine block ,outside dimensions. just different Bore and stroke .
Nice music selection!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don't get it. This is it?
good video ! Wait till yur in mountains with heavy stuff and the oil in your brake SAVER gets hot ! youll have fun !
Yeah, BrakeSaver notoriously got engine oil HOT, even with oversize oil cooler and larger capacity.
Simple question, Is it for sale? Kinda of in pursuit of one like that. Thanks for your time and attention to this.
Daddy had a 1981 W-900 with the v-8 Cat & a 15 speed double o.d. when I was about 17. We covered some miles during the summer when school was out each year. He liked his but not many mechanics knew how to work on the 3408. His was turned out of the frame and with 78-80,000 on would stroll on flat ground around 95-105 mph.
the only motor cat built that was guaranteed to bleed you dry.
3408?
Mike Young yes cat made a 3408 !
That IS quiet. (THUMBS UP)
good looking truck
V8 has a CAT brake saver??
Sure sounds like it.
Most did. Or an exhaust brake. Looking at buying a Freightliner with a 3408 and exhaust brake
ticky121 3406 had a saver also
No jakes on 3408s ... sniff
Cats had a retarder - worked on engine oil pressure.
really smooth driving that cat can purr , liked your tufted dash and headliner were those cylinder head ashtrays atop the dash.
Nope. Air conditioning/heating vents.
Hey i know that road! Orting hwy must have been backed up!
Jason, Yes Nik did re-insulate the cab. After tear down, re-riveting and painting, Nik installed a noise barrier type foil backing and show side but what the material is, I will have to find out. Nik cut it up and installed by pieces like you would insulating a house. Every inch including firewall and floor is covered. The interior is all new by an upholstery guy using factory A model KW specs then installed by Nik. The headliner is KW original A model plastic that he found. You should use your A model picture for the google icon. Old School is Cool!
hello sir I own a 1981 w900a and its in real good shape but I noticed your cab is way quiet then mine did you re insulate it and how did you do that? as well did your truck have a plastic headliner? and did you reupholster It thank you great truck by the way, the video is inspiration for me that I should keep my old truck and re do it. thanks Jason
I find it hard to believe that u can tell how quiet his interior is thru audio feed
@@jeremymccardle3696 You can clearly hear the driver and passenger talking to each other in a normal tone of voice.
Nice! makes me want to fix my 1693
Looks like Oregon or Washington..
Maybe crossing the Stilaguamish on southbound Hwy 9 just north of Arlington. Looks like a Concrete Nor'West Mack transfer dump he passed.
Looks like alderton area , near roads lake road and mcmillan road
Yes, Nik does work these Trucks. Have (2) of currently (4) Truck projects in the works that should be on the Road next year - More videos coming.
True Story! She has the Retarder and Nik was looking into the exhaust brake...Time will tell.
You can't get jake heads for the 3408, you can only get an exhaust brake and a retarder.
Music is by Elmer Fudpucker, Song is; Damn D.O.T. You can by it on iTunes
What is the name of the song in the background? Please tell me
MY FAVORITE SET UP ENGINE & TRANS...
can hardly hear the shifting
I wouldn't like to drive that thing over here, wouldn't get far in an almost 2000 year old historic city center but nice vid :)
Those 3408's sure do make every other engine look bad, especially the old Detroits. nothing like have a ton of torque and a super quiet engine you don't need to scream to be heard when you speak. Nice truck.
12v71 only way too go
Listen to what one sounds like when it's jacked through the roof, the ones that rune in Austraila pulling trains pull like locomotives and sound like it too.
This 1693TA has 425hp @ 2,100 rpm. Puts out 1,275 lb torque @ 1,400 rpm. (per the manual, never dynode) Fuel avg's 3.2 to 4.1 mpg depending on how big a smoke trail you like!
any idea how many horses in that 1693?
Man those 1693s had wicked sound turbos on them!
