Continuing my aviation adventure. I am in the process of building a Vans RV-8 and trying to finally complete my private pilots certificate. I’m a retired USAF C5 Flight Engineer. I started learning to fly when I was 17 and then the Air Force and life happened. This channel will be my place to document my journey.
Vans RV-8 Left Tank rear baffle install Ep 60
This is the completion of the left fuel tank. I got the fuel sender installed in the rear baffle bay 2 and got the baffle sealed and riveted to the tank. This will now cure for the next couple weeks while I am on a work trip. Leak test will be done as soon as I get home. Hope you all enjoy. Please leave your questions or comments down below.

Let it cure nose up to help the back baffle sealant beads to sit where they need to seal, let gravity help you, build on!!
Thanks I did pull it out of the cradle after i finished and it’s sitting nose up for the cure.
When I did my tanks, I buttered the flanges of the aft baffle in addition to the bead along the bend radius. No Leaks, good luck on tank #2
Thanks I was thinking about doing exactly that this time around. I figure the sealant will do a better job grabbing ahold of other sealant than just the bare aluminum pushing against it. Right now I just hope the fix works and I get the right tank sealed.
@@TFlight77 I spent a little time at the big B chasing fuel leaks on 135's. Where it comes out is easy, where it goes in , a completely different story. Fay surface sealing all mating surfaces is about as much as one can do. We used to have little caps made out of cured sealant that had a hole in the top of the dome . these were filled with sealant and pushed over Hi-loc nuts. the excess came out the top and was cleaned away, made for a neat consistent look. We didn't really use #3 rivets even to attach nutplates.
@@stevenwilkes5737 As a Flight Engineer I only had to identify the leaks and work around them in an emergency but never fix them. One step at a time. The waiting for it to cure and test is the worst part now.
Keep on keeping on! You’ll get the leak fixed and on to the next step. 😃👍🏻 And hope you have power soon too!
Best of luck to you and everyone down there recovering from the hurricane.
Hey my Friend , I have seen your videos which are really awesome and video Thumbnails are so eye-catching. A gasket sounds good but in just under 30 years that is my only leak. I had the original cork gaskets, unfortunately I let the tank go partially dry during an extended storage and the cork dried out. let me tell you, its a bitch to access the inboard end of an RV-6 tank when its on the plane.
Yeah that doesn't sound like fun at all.
I used Acorn nuts on mine also and no leaks in 29 years
Wy is lasercut bad?
Its not normally a bad thing however, Vans had subcontracted when they got busy during covid to have another company laser punch the holes in a lot of their parts instead of the cnc punch press Vans normally uses. Unfortunately there was a loss of quality control and a large number of the parts had irregular shapes or notches in the holes left by the laser. This led to a lot of them cracking as soon as the hole was dimpled. Cracks around rivet holes can spread through a part under stress and possibly lead to a failure later on. Vans has done analysis on all of these parts and come up with a list of parts that are critical to replace and then others that aren't as critical.
Good morning friend, what is the procedure for giving the degree to a vertical wing?
Good afternoon, I am not sure what you are asking. If you mean ensuring the vertical stabilizer is straight I wont be getting to that part until I attach it to the fuselage. This will be sometime next year if I am lucky.
Would you be willing to share your stl for the capping tool? As for the filling of water, I just read a thread on vansairforce and it was brought up that the surface tension of water is greater than avgas. So it may still leak fuel but not water.
As soon as I get in later I will try to post the link to the STL file for anyone interested. I ended up reading the same on Van Airforce after I posted the video. I’ll just continue to trust the process.
Here is a link to the tinkercad file I created the cap seal tool from. Hope this helps. www.tinkercad.com/things/6aDyxIV5JA4-cap-seal
Where did you buy the sealed nut plates from? And do you have a part number for the ones you used?
B&B aircraft supply NAS1473-A08.
Looks like the Numatz is the goto tool. Learning tips for my RV8 build.
It was a pain to get bled correctly but once you do it works pretty well just have to keep an eye on the ram attachment screw and not let it get broken. Its also a very nice combo with the Clemson C frame. I really appreciate being able to have both hands free to hold a part while using the foot pedal to engage the ram.
@@TFlight77 I can't find a link to the Clemson C frame..do you have one? Thanks.
@@adrianbonwitt5924 clemsonaeronautics.com/ He also has excellent squeezer yokes for a better price than most. All of my yokes are from him I think he even mentioned he has a 6" available now geared toward the RV14 crowd. Hope this helps.
@@TFlight77 Got it, thanks.
tig weld it to the spar
Tig welding the fittings to the rib is an interesting idea. I don't have a Tig setup unfortunately so I would have to find someone or a shop willing to try it. Ill have to think on that.
I have a brand new never used fuel tank pick up tube with screen from Vans if you would like it,
I didnt even realize they had a premade version of the part. I would be interested in it just let me know what you would like for it.
Fuel Tanks are SOOOOOO Much FUN!! don't wear anything that you don't want to throw away, as the sealant gets everywhere all on its own.
Congrats on your check ride!!!
Woo hoo! Congrats!
Own it on your check ride, man!
Thank you
Hey, how unusual unboxng~
Living in Texas I feel you pain about working in a shop or garage
Maybe try draping off your immediate work area with sheet plastic and let the rest of the garage go native.
That’s not a bad idea.
Hi, i am curious if your rivet squeezer can handle 5/32 rivets or does it max out at 1/8 ?
I’ve never tried a 5/32 rivet. It’s all based on pressure. I use about 60psi for -4 rivets and 85psi for -3 rivets. I believe the manual says not to go above 90psi but I’ve gone above for dimpling with not issues and I have read that others have done the same.
I know tig welding...and all work.seainless steel
Bro you want worker
When I did my RV-6, none of those holes were provided. I marked and drilled my ribs to make sure I had adequate edge margin and then back drilled the skin with a 12" bit. it was a two-person job. Build on!!
Even though I’ve already done all of this, it’s still exciting to see it come together. Looking good!
Thanks. It’s been fun although that double offset was almost the end of me. I still need to go make sure I don’t have any others that need replaced.
@@TFlight77 that thing is brutal. Using some electrical tape to keep it from rotating is really helpful.
You have to wonder which builder got TWO left spars??
They are out there somewhere haha.
Was checking out the dynon booth at snf, they are soooo nice
Easy, just build the plane with 2 right wings. If one is good, 2 is better.
Two rights can’t be wrong…
Dang, that drill press setup is genius!
Thanks I had the idea for a while now but wasn’t sure if it was going to work. So far seems to be a winner though.
Just a few minutes away from you. I live in Dayton. Enjoyed and good luck. When you get it finished let me know would love to see it
Not far at all. Im in between Cleveland and Coldspring. Going to be a while before its all done but its getting there.
I just finished rolling the edge on my -14 rudder. Reallllly disliked that part of the build. Would love to see that engineered out in future plans, but for this design I see why they had to do it.
what headset are you wearing?
Its a Bose Quiet Comfort 35 with the NFlight Nomad Pro Mic. Its the best of both worlds for now; a comfortable Bose noise canceling headset that I can take the mic off of and use for travel and then attach the mic and use it for flying without the hefty price tag of the Bose aviation headsets. Later on after I have my certificate I will probably upgrade to a Bose A30.
The reamer is the correct tool for final-sizing these holes. They’re only a few thousands shy. The reamer leaves a much cleaner hole and requires little deburring, if any.
I have noticed the reamed holes are definitely cleaner. I am also surprised at how much the primer actually adds to closing the tolerance on the holes back up.
Drilling those inboard ribs was nerve-wracking.
Yes it was. I am working on final assembly now of the HS so I am still nervous that I did that all right. Guess time I will find out soon enough.
