Graphilo and Tomoe River are great, but can be expensive and hard to come by. Here are a few more budget-friendly alternatives, all with high-quality paper.

The downgrade in packaging is a disgrace
Love Kakuno pens, and I guess I will have to order these as well now. Could you please tell me the name of the notebook you are using in the video?
the one I'm writing in is a Yamamoto Bank Paper note pad.
Great video - thanks.
Glad you liked it!
This is awesome! Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hello. I noticed that on one page (13/1) in my techo A5 Hon I have bleed through but not on the other pages so far. …. I don’t feel like complaining but wondered if you might have had a similar experience
Interesting that you mention that. I thought my Weeks had great paper when I first tested it, but the second time (different pages) I got different results.
I'd love to see a longer demo of the PO nib. Great info in this video overall! Thanks.
Good idea! I'll think about it. Some of Pilot's lesser-known nibs do warrant a longer explanation. Waverly is another one.
@timewithtata
Too many people with similar tastes as I gush over the PO nib. Think it needs to be the next purchase for me.
If like needlepoint nib grinds you'll definitely enjoy the PO!
I love the Elite 95s nib
That's a good one indeed! Looks nice as well. I've got a vintage Elite pocket pen that I adore.
Amazing Emerald color
It's a pretty one, but a bit dark, which is why I shot in in bright backlight 😅
So glad you're on UA-cam, Jacob! Do you find that the Namiki Yukari #10 nib has a similar level of softness as the Pilot #10 nib? I know that the Yukari #10 is 18k gold.
Thank you! Yes, you're right that the Namiki is 18k. To be honest, they feel pretty similar to me. Gotta love that Namiki bicolor stamp, though.
@@fudefan Yeah I'm a sucker for bicolor nibs :)
Is the #15 nib available in PO? I'd love to have a 743 with this nib.
Yes it is. Here's a direct link (Amazon JP): amzn.asia/d/0qYUWG8
@@fudefan Thanks! I just placed an order.
Great video, thank you good comparison . I have small gold nib no 3 nib on a Stella 90s maybe pilot doesn´t make any pens with this nib anymore ?
Stella 90s and Legno 89s are discontinued, but as @Guairenito just reminded me, the no3 nib lives on with the Grance.
@@fudefan Thanks, its a very cute good looking nib. I miss the days when Rakuten shipped to europe.
@ thankyou ! I´ll check it out.
Hey Jacob! This is a wonderful video... as much as I love Japanese pens, I hardly own any of them, and it's great to get this primer on the nibs. Very well done :-) Thanks!
Thank you! Glad you found it useful. By the way, I see you've been in Japan looking for ink 😁 Did you stop by Okamotoya in Toranomon? If not, I'd suggest adding it to your itinerary next time! Huge selection of T&L inks as well as an ink testing station.
@@fudefan I did not, but I'll definitely add it to my list...thanks! For my trips to Japan, in order to keep myself from going completely broke, I set a couple of rules for myself... I only purchased inks that were (1) store exclusives and (2) made in Japan, which excludes Tono and Lims (although, I did end up with a few of them, and probably would have broken the rule for them if I were a bigger fan of their inks, since they fall in that category of inks that I'm only likely to find in Japan, even if they're not made there).
@@thewetpen sounds like a sensible set of rules. Tono & Lims makes some pretty fun, wild inks though. Inks with both shimmer and pigments (aka feed killer inks..), fluorescent, etc. Okamotoya is sort-of T&L's flagship store. The ink testing station is so much fun.
@@fudefan Excellent! I'll check it out next time. I've avoided glittery inks for a long time, though now that I have a couple of glass pens that I like, I might branch out a bit 🙂
Nice video. Pilot also makes a Pilot Grance with a #3 14K nib.
Good point! I completely forgot about that. I thought that nib was discontinued with Legno 89s and Stella 90s.
@ I also didn’t know it exists until I saw the launch of the Grance last year.
823 is my all time fav, just got the LE green one thanks to you ! But have to say tho, love the Namiki #20 equally ❤
Yay! The green 823 is pretty. The crazy thing is that it's cheaper than the standard 823 here, because of the timing of that release and Pilot's own price increases.
Only 3 weeks ago I was in Itoya … and now I’m back in the States. The fountain pen gods are not happy with me. 😭
Maybe good for the wallet in the end 😁
Ever see a #3 nib in the wild, Jacob? Pilot used to make them, though I don’t think they still do.
Ever see a #3 nib in the wild, Jacob? Pilot used to make them, though I don’t think they still do.
They still make it, the Pilot Grance uses a #3 14K nib.
I had a Legno 89s with #3 nib at one point, but must've sold it. Great little nib.
I agree that Pilot nibs are amazing from steel basic to the 5 and 10s I’ve enjoyed, including FA and PO nibs. Happy 2025. Lively videography.
Indeed! The larger nibs are excellent as well, but I find my self reaching for my Custom 742 and CH912 often.
@ someday I’ll have to save up for s Namiki with a large nib although the S500 is more in my dreams.
I've only tried the size 5 and 10, and the 10 only the FA I would REALLY REALLY want to try the others. I really like my CH92 fine!!!
The CH92 is such a great pen! I wish Pilot would make it in more colors and with more nib options.
You do a really good job at your videography Fudefan 👏👏👏 Really well lit and so crisp. Can't wait to see more videos from you. I love the #5-SF, #10 -FA, #15-FA and can't wait to try a #10 PO one day. I also love the SEF falcon nib... Which I guess would probably be a #5 if I had to guess.
Thank you! Glad to hear that. The Falcon nib is an odd one indeed. I think you're right about the size. The naming of that nib is quite confusing. Here in Japan, the Falcon pen is called Elabo, while Pilot's Custom series FA nib is often referred to as falcon.
Hands down, the Namiki#20 nib Medium is just so beautifully tuned - I love this nib.
It's a good one for sure, and Namiki's stamp is just beautiful.
Thanks for the heads up, Jacob. Looks like Pilot is doing more store exclusives in various colours since their Shosaikan and Bungubox exclusives.
Seems like it, yes! There were quite a few of them last year.
Beautiful pen. It appears a lot darker in natural light, but a great addition to the lineup.
Yes, you're right, it's actually pretty dark! Difficult to shoot. Hence the bright backlight 😅
Following your channel is bad for my wallet lol 🤣
Sorry 😂
wow gorgeous! thanks for the tip!
You're welcome!
I wish I could access it in the states .. I love pilot products!!
These are available on Amazon JP, and there's an English version of the site, and many items ship worldwide. Shipping cost could be high, though.
So what was the left pen in the set ? Looks interesting. Great video
Thanks! The leftmost pen in the gray pen case? That's a HelloTello Venice Piccolo
Hi! Wondering how long did the replacement take to come in?
I filled out the inquiry form around mid-October and got an email from Hobonichi about the exchange program on December 14th. I sent my defective planner back the next weekday and received the replacement another two days later.
@@fudefan ohh that was pretty quick once they responded! Did you have to pay shipping for the return and to ship the new one?
@@Diana-DHY No shipping cost. I sent it with Yamato chaku-barai, i.e. receiver pays. No shipping cost for the replacement either. I'm not sure if the procedure is the same outside Japan, but the email should have instructions.
@ got it, thanks!!
Such a wonderful video. I live in Canada, and we do not have a culture where stationary reaches this level of enthusiasm. Thank you.
Thanks for watching! There are lots of stationery shows here, and I'm planning to do more videos like this.
Are you Swedish? Not that it matters 😅 it's just that I am and to me you sound very Swedish!
Det stämmer! Jag har inte bott i Sverige på över 20 år men dialekten sitter kvar.
Not a good trade. Yet another blue, another orange, while we lose tsutsuji and kosumosu.
The blue one is a head-scratcher, but Syun-gyo is a welcome addition I'd say.
I like to make my own notebooks, do you have any suggestions on affordable, loose leaf paper?
Take a look at Kokuyo's KB A4 sheets (KB-39N). Those are sold in packs of 500 sheets for around 20 USD and are said to be ink friendly.
Addendum about Muji paper: ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx5x2ggs3WWV_14BlduyKwO59OEIeSNYvc
I plan on getting the "brown" one and pair it with a Diamine Damson ink 🥰 It will be my first Pilot, I'm very excited!!
Good choice! Can't go wrong with a Kakuno.
All excellent choices!
Thanks for watching!
Great review, Jacob. I was really happy to see your endorsement of the Tsubame notebooks - I think they are under appreciated and an incredible value. I’ve tested them with a number of inks and they seem to be absolutely bulletproof with respect to feathering and bleedthrough. And the water-based ink used for lines is also a great touch. I have found that one has to be a little bit cautious with Tsubame, though - I recently ordered a 5-pack of A5 plain (i.e., unlined) notebooks, and it turned out not be the laid Fools paper, but a more run-of-the-mill wove paper that was not as fountain-pen-friendly as the University line of notebooks. Probably fine with gel pens and the like, though. I’d be curious to know if there is way to tell the Fools paper from the wove paper by product code. These A5 notebooks I bought have a product code of N2009. But all the University-line notebooks I’ve seen have codes starting with H, W, or Y. The cream notebooks, which also have fantastic paper, have codes starting with C. Google hasn’t turned up any info on how to interpret Tsubame’s products codes.
You're right, Tsubame also sells notebooks with what it calls "high-quality" paper (上質紙), which, despite what the name suggests, isn't nearly as good as Fools. Anything that says "フールス" has the good stuff. The best reference I know of is Tsubame's own product listing: www.tsubamenote.co.jp/product.html In short: Stay away from the A6 and B6 pocket notebooks as well as the A5 blank (白無地ノート) notebooks.
@@fudefan Thanks very much for that information! Very helpful.
I mentioned in another comment an upcoming trip to Japan, so I'm curious if you'd be willing to make a video with stationary stores recommendations for notebooks and fountain pens? I've been googling but it's a bit hard even with a translator.
That's an interesting idea. Let me think about it. I do plan to do a short video about Okamotoya, a lesser-known one and probably my #1 destination for ink. For now: If you're in to paper, you definitely want to check out Kakimori in Kuramae, Tokyo.
@@fudefan I definitely will, thank you for the suggestions!
1) Kokuyo Campus 2) Kokuyo Smart Campus 3) Muji - Planting tree paper 4) Logical Air 5) Tsubame Universtity notebook
I'll have to get those when I go to Japan, because the prices are outrageous in Europe 🤭 I'm especially curious about the Tsubame one, since my favourite ink (diamine writer's blood) has a gorgeous shading.
@@Sphiyel yeah, very much not affordable over here :-(
some EU retailers, including Pen Venture and Nomado, carry Tsubame, but the prices are a bit higher indeed. On the other hand, I'd think European brands like Rhodia are more affordable over there (pretty expensive here!).
Thank you so much. I have ordered a Campus notebook to try. Happy New Year.
Happy new year! I hope you like it.
Tsubame. Thank you for the tip. Campus is great, but … I'm not a student anymore. ;) I just don't like any of their designs.
Tsubame is great! Regarding Campus, there's also a "Campus Biz" lineup. Stylish black, navy, and gray notebooks.
@fudefan I haven't ever seen one that was attractive.
This is a wonderful video and list, thank you!
Thank you! Happy to hear that.
Thank you so much for this review. I appreciate learning about the history. I love, love, love, Japanese stationery!
I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
if you in the US, the Office Depot "professional" writing pad is not bad. The white one that is. Not bad at all.
Good to know -- thanks for sharing!
Thank you for showing how to reuse a cartridge! I knew there had to be a way. I’ll be purchasing the con 70 but it’s still good to know. Ty❤
glad you found it useful! 😁
I still have an untouched LE Tsubame notebook from the Cygames fest. Wouldn't say the paper is all that good (although still on par with the budget options here in Russia), so it's mostly just used for photoshoots, because hey, dragon waifus. Kokyo though...I've tried a great many "top" japanese papers. Once the excitement dies down over the Tomoes and the Takasagos, the gel ring bound Kokyos are still my favorite notebooks, on par only with (or I guess, coupled with - due to size) the B5 TAG Some pads. Imo, both outperform the "peak" overindulging connoisseur stuff when it comes to just writing things down and not splashing ink around. Not sure if it's considered the top in the Kokyo lineup, but iirc they weren't all that pricey back in the day.
Yes, can't go wrong with Kokuyo. Those soft ring notebooks are some of my favorites as well. What I really wish for is a notebook with the Campus 'shikkari' paper, which currently is only available as A5 and B5 lined refills, for reasons unknown to me.
