BUMP IS CALGARY'S STREET ART FESTIVAL
Started in 2017 as the Beltline Urban Murals Project, the community-led, artist-focused BUMP Festival has exploded to become a city-wide street art movement reimagining public spaces through the visual arts and expanding the capacity of the local arts community. A diverse jury selects from among local, national and international artists for the BUMP Festival’s annual exhibition of new mural, Road Works and graffiti works in Calgary.
We believe that public art can enrich communities, create beautiful and captivating places, provoke conversation and add beauty to the everyday. To date, the BUMP Festival has transformed Calgary with over 270+ public art installations capturing the imagination of residents and visitors in a celebration of the arts and community.

Revolution, Liberation and Change through Public Art
Public Art has always had a transformative power in shaping societies and challenging the status quo. In this panel, our speakers converge to delve into the profound impact of public art as a catalyst for revolution, liberation, and social change. From vibrant murals adorning city walls to thought-provoking installations in public spaces, art has long served as a powerful tool for expressing dissent, amplifying marginalized voices, and fostering unity within communities. In this panel at the 2024 BUMP Urban Art Conference in Calgary, AB we widen our lens to discuss examples from around the globe, examining how public art has been instrumental in sparking conversations, mobilizing movements, and redefining cultural narratives.

Trevor Stark here! I wanted to correct a verbal slip: I said "hundreds of thousands" were killed after the Paris Commune, but meant "tens of thousands." Also, the video edits out a question from an audience member who asked whether the Saddam Hussein regime's visual culture constituted "public art". That's the context for my comments near the end. Thanks to Eman, Dan, Harvey, and BUMP for a great conversation
