Humphreys Peak Day Hike
Humphreys Peak is the tallest natural point in Arizona at 12,633’. The mountain is located near Flagstaff within Coconino National Forest and is a part of the San Francisco Peaks Range.
The hike up to Humphreys is ~9.3mi round trip with 3,200’ of elevation gain. Beginning from the Arizona Snowbowl, the trail heads up the ski slopes eventually dipping into the woods. Once in the woods the trail climbs steadily up, switchbacking a handful of times before topping out on the saddle of Humphreys and Agassiz Peak (second highest mountain in AZ). At the saddle, the trail roughly follows the ridge line up to the summit of Humphreys.

For my second to last hike of my single season winter 46 attempt I broke out Mt. Marcy, Mt. Skylight and Gray Peak. All three mountains are over 4,800’ with Marcy being the tallest mountain in NY. The ADK High Peaks received a good amount of fresh snow which required me to break out most of the trails I used for this hike. In total this hike came out to 17 miles and 5,000ft of elevation gain wh...

Cool vid. Appreciate the map views -- helps tell the story better. And i like the downward view of stepping thru the mud. Gnarly hike.
Would a Class A motorhome be able to make it up to the trail head?
@@justinrobinson4394 the road is paved so I would think so but I’m not sure if there are any parking spaces for something that big
@@bdshultis Awesome thank you!
Great video! Love that area! 👍🏻
Great views 👍🙂
Those are amazing hiking shorts!!! 🦈
@@daveedcue thanks! Gotta look fashionable on trail lol
What time of year did you go?
@@katiebieker5381 late July 2023
@@bdshultis I'll be there Sept 19th! I'm trying to plan what to wear, what's important.
A few winters ago I did a 5-day loop starting from Putnam. Putnam-Clear-Tubmill-Oxshoe-Rock-Putnam. The winter before was a slightly different loop from Putnam which included Pharaoh. No one is there in winter.
Mad respect to you for having the balls to adventure travel the way that you do! 🏔🥾
Thanks for sharing Brian. I may attempt this trail in August during my trip to Maine. I grew up in Northern Maine and South Branch pond is one of my most favorite places I have ever been to. I have hiked all the other trails around there but have not done 'the loop'.
Traveler's Mountain is volcanic in origin, that's why the rock resembles devil's tower
This is so beautiful
Hey great episode and insight on this trail with a little humor. Happy belated Birthday young man as I just subbed your channel.
😎☮ Nice camp for your 27th birthday Happy trails
The LT is no joke, it's a hard trail ankle twister. I made the smith's knob climb in the dark Tuesday night. I camped up top in a thunderstorm, loved it ! The Black forest trail is second to the LT in hard.
Thank you! You captured the true nature of the trail in your video(s)! Great hike on the LT! Do the Black Forest Trail from Slate Run, PA. (as you indicated was your intention). Happy Trails! - Paul M.

Having grown up north of Boston, this kind of terrain is quite familiar. Now out west, we don't see a lot of this (Seattle/VancouverBC/Montana) - grateful that you got some sun and drier weather. The rain lends a certain mystique...until it doesn't. Enjoy the rest of the hike Brian - hope the better weather continues. Good choice with the MSR.
Happy Birthday Brian !
It would be nice if u told us where u were cranberry is a big lake
GREAT video Brian! 10/10!
Good video. Great footage. Commentary good. Critique: keep the camera on the scenery & not yourself.
Your videos and locations are very good. I subscribed a couple of days ago.
Thanks for this video! I am hiking Roaring Brook to Baxter Peak then back to RB next August. I appreciated your video perspective to get an idea of the terrain!
Nice job. I enjoyed seeing the Winds again through your video. Keep up the good work and have fun!
Great TR ... brings back great memories!!!
Happy birthday
East Kennebago was my worst! Saw a moose that day too.
Nice.. We hiked Boundary from the Quebec side.
Congratulations on a tough, but rewarding hike. Spring is a rough time to do this hike. Happy 25th birthday. I see you were rocking a Catskills Hat. I an going back to do the Cranberry Lake 50, for a second time, this fall
Epic trip!
Wow, one year ago and I’m the first commenter. This is one of my favorite places and I’ve camped there many times. In the back pond you might feel like you were alone in the world. I never canoed there but have seen it from the mountains on both sides. I tried to get to the top of the Traveler once but had to turn back because of mid 90s humid weather. Back down we cooled off in the pools of Howe brook. The rhyolite cliffs on north Traveler show the volcanic origins of the mountain.
Looks like a fun loop. Attempted to do something similar from Putnam Pond in April of last year. Spent a night at Clear Pond, went up Treadway, and then a huge snowstorm kept us at Clear for the next few nights huddling around the fire lol.
Awesome peak. Love the boreal forest!
Awesome job man!
Nice job on doing the six pack. Just did it last weekend. Headed to saddleback and horn this weekend. Finishing 67 soon. Finished grid in December.
I did the same loop in the opposite direction in May 2022. Going back again this summer. Love it there.
Nice outing and thanks for sharing.
I have hiked the those mountains in the 1970s remains of old buildings and structures ! No GPS ,just a compass to find your way back! Could be old logging camps but not sure,
Very good! Hope to see more
Nice DSW backpacking video. I know the area like the back of my hand. I have that same pack and also have camped at the Forks many times. Keep making videos. I have dozens of WV UA-cam videos. Thanks for sharing.
I’m new to this, looking to do my first solo hike and camp at DS. Do you know if you can camp anywhere in the park or only at designated sites?
I believe there no “official” designated camp sites but there are plenty of unofficial established sites to use (you’ll usually see a fire ring and it’ll look like people have camped there). Just to be safe I’d check the Monongahela National Forest website for specific guidelines on backcountry camping
@@bdshultis Cool, thanks man. Looks like a solid place to spend a few days.
Great videos! Looking forward to spending a week down there this summer, coming down from Nova Scotia. Cheers
Great blog! This place is absolutely gorgeous
Thanks for taking us along on your trip. The CL50 is an absolute beautiful hike. I completed in the fall of '22 but started in the fall of '21. I had to bail half-way in '21 due to a ankle injury. I started in same location as you but went the opposite way. Hiking during the fall is absolutely beautiful.
All I remember was the amount of beaver activity. I enjoyed the challenge and the amount of camping options. I went in the fall and it wasn't as wet as your journey. Like you, I could not wait to get back to the car. Thanks for the video.
Beautiful views
That’s an awesome hike. I and a friend attempted to get to the peak before the loop trail was opened but it was in 90+ weather and when we got to the second flat buttress we decided to go back. One of 3 times I abandoned a hike in 40 some odd years of hiking in the White Mountains and BSP. When we descended to Howe brook we walked a little ways up to a nice pool and stripped down to skivvies and cooled off.
Nice video and commentary. I've hiked that area many times. Stayed at about every spot in the vicinity of the Forks. On one trip in the (1980's) while sitting on the rocks at the falls a Navy jet flew up Red Creek just above the treetops. Trees bending over and was it loud! Really something to experience. We could read the numbers on the jet...wish I had written them down. The excitement of the plane along with a beer made for a great first night of the trip experience.
That's awesome, what a view of the forest !!
