I must respectfully disagree that this is a good story. It's not well written. Trying to be constructive, I present the following. 02:16 - Their instruments ... readings that defied conventional understanding. What does that even mean? What were they measuring? Was it an unearthly shade of the color blue? 02:32 - This isn't natural Thank you, Captain obvious. Every description to this point has been aimed to tell us this. This makes the character seem like an idiot. 02:43 - It's as if it's alive. How did she possibly arrive at that conclusion? What is or isn't alive is not an easy thing to tell from something totally alien. In an era where chatbots can fool some people into thinking they're people, not programs, how did she determine it's anything like what is understood to be life? It's like she's reading the author's mind. 02:55 - It responded to my touch. Yes. So do plasma balls. The little lightning inside jumps to your hand. This scientist is very easily startled and/or impressed. 03:09 - The team exchanged nervous glances. It's an immense structure. The fact that it had an access to it's interior should be less surprising than the fact they accidentally figured out how to open it. 03:30 - Unlike any technology ... ancient and impossibly advanced. How did they come to this conclusion? For all they know, it's a giant Rube Goldberg egg poacher. 03:53 - Yet, beneath the surface ... sense of latent power More things the crew inexplicably knows somehow. Not impossible, but how on earth do they know? What clued them into it? Was it energy readings they were taking? What kind of technobabble energy were they recording? How did it clue them in to it's power. This could be satisfactorily explained, but the story just keeps pulling these conclusions from thin air. 03:38 - more than just a relic ... sleeping giant What does that even mean? Even if it were a "sleeping giant", whatever that means, it's still a relic is it not? Is it a sleeping, giant Rube Goldberg egg poacher? 04:08 - every corner revealed new mysteries Like what? So far, they cannot comprehend what it is they're looking at, what it does, or where it comes from. What qualifies as a 'new' mystery at this point? Another thing that could be explained satisfactorily, but the vagueness just makes the crew seem stupid. Are they testing things? What are they testing? How do their tests give them unexpected results? 04:42 - artifact was waking up Or one of the overanxious, bumbling crew tripped it's security doing some inadvisably invasive testing. Unearned explanations in order to move the plot along are unsatisfying to your audience. 04:43 - Panic spread through the team ... hawk's eyes were fixed This 'exploration' team doesn't seem very well suited to exploration. They story paints them as anxious and disorganized, prone to panic when the slightest thing goes wrong. For all they know, the artifact was a giant alarm clock and it's doing it's job. Evacuate to safety orderly and efficiently like professionals, not in a panic. There's nothing that would suggest why they're so jumpy. Were there faint noises emanating from the interior that sounded like faint whispers in just short of comprehensible tones? Did the crew feel things brush up against them but when they looked, there was nothing there? Why so jumpy? What drew Hawk to the crystal. The entire place had pulsating glyphs. Why was he so drawn to this random item. Was he hearing voices in his head in languages he didn't understand? Along with these voices did he see images, almost like memories that at once both seemed to feel like his own, yet were also unmistakably alien? 04:56 - the crystal erupted All is explained. It was a giant, alien flash-bang. 05:54 - it's alive ... beacon or a weapon Again. How the hell did he determine that? This would be like concluding that my yard lights are alive because their motion sensors turn them on when you move. There is nothing that happened that would have suggested what the purpose of the artifact is. Other than possibly a flash-bang. 06:06 - it's not of this world This makes absolutely zero sense. Even if it's an ancient alien artifact, it's still of this world, of this universe. Was it bigger on the inside so they suspect quasi-dimensional shenanigans? Normally 'not of this world' suggests the supernatural. So far, there's nothing to suggest anything but tech they don't understand, yet are making ridiculously unfounded speculation about. Not very scientific of them. 06:18 - something beyond their comprehension ... feeling ... set in motion forces They're really going to be disappointed when it's just an overly complex egg poacher. They've discovered nothing that should have them baselessly speculating this so far. The story is mind reading the author too much. Show, don't tell. What happened that could have led them to these conclusions because there's nothing sufficient described thus far. 06:47 - faces mixed with excitement and trepidation ... data streams unlike anything ever encountered. They must really wish they'd brought along more recipes for poached eggs. This seems a bit overkill for what we've been shown. The excitement of discovery, sure. Why are they so anxious? What data streams? Did they set up monitoring equipment on the surface? Is it just ships sensors? What does unlike anything ever encountered mean? Are they measuring for phenomina they've never experienced before? If so, how were they measuring for it? What is the artifact doing that's so strange? Does anyone else smell poached egg? 06:57 - still recovering from his ordeal How fragile is this guy? There was a flash of light and some as yet unidentified energy. Did it throw him across the room and we weren't told about it? Was he burned by the intense light and energy? Did it affect his nervous system somehow? 07:01 - racing with the implications Like what? Is this the first sign of any alien technology? Is it the first indication humanity isn't the only life that has existed in the universe? 07:37 - like ... a living entity Once again. This is thrown out much too lightly. What is or isn't alive in an alien technology isn't so readily discernable. When she 'decodes' whatever it is she'd trying to decode (we haven't really been told) it might just be a spam advertisement for alien penis enlargement. What on earth was it shifting and adapting to? Was it combating her attempts to decode the unidentified thing? We've never been told that there are any transmissions. Just a hum, some unidentified energy, and pulsating glyphs. 07:47 - we need to understand it's purpose ... if it's a beacon ... if it's a weapon ... if it's an egg poacher. The scientist really loves jumping to conclusions with nothing to substantiate them. 08:00 - could be a remnant of an ancient civilization or it could be a threat How are those mutually exclusive? That's not a binary. It could be both. Or the largest novelty cigarette lighter ever discovered. 08:30 - it's like it's trying to communicate More conclusions the crew have been given nothing to base them on. If it's just a pulse of energy, is the artifact an energy source? What makes it seem like it could be communicating. How would they understand that's what it's trying to do if everything is so unprecedented? 08:53 - It's a languages How?! How do they know it's a language and not some alien art? Or that it's not energy readings from the artifact displayed in an incomprehensible format? 09:04 - the artifact ... sentient ... reaching out Or it's an advanced OS you cannot comprehend. How do they keep determining these things? 09:39 - showing us locations of ... There is zero way for them to have determined this. This guy is the absolute WORST scientist. Constantly jumping to conclusions for which he has no evidence or even reason to possibly believe. Not unless this information is being somehow uploaded to his brain and then his crew should seriously suspect his input. It could be leading them to the alien authorities to arrest them for trespassing. Alright. That's enough constructive criticism for now.
