    Good day Scott, based on what I see, your analysis and David's analysis, this was a track incident that we can all learn from. There was very little time between power loss and contact. I usually get a hand or foot out as quick as possible any time I slow on track, even if it is due to an abnormally slow rider ahead of me preventing me from running at pace. Since David said he did not have you in his peripheral this likely would not have changed the outcome in this situation and maybe you did get a hand up. It shows the importance of getting off line/track if a technical problem arises. The scariest part of this footage for me was when you were stopped on track. This was necessary to allow David to get himself clear of your bike and in my opinion the right thing to do. Super dangerous position for you both to be in. Thankfully you both were not collected by other riders. I agree, there is no fault here and glad both of you are relatively uninjured. Bummer about the carbon bodywork on David's bike. I personally cannot afford that kind of expense for the first set let alone replace it when damaged. Thanks for posting this.

      Hi Scott this video is a great learning tool. I too was involved in a similar incident at Willow Springs about 30 years ago only I was the rear ender. I was entering a turn at over 100 mph and saw a rider about 100 ft in front of me in the line and the next thing I know I'm on him at the apex of the turn and couldn't react quick enough resulting in me smashing into him. I ended up with some cracked ribs and a broken finger and he a broken ankle. Afterwards he told me he had a mechanical issue but he failed to get out of the racing line and put a foot or hand out to let others know. So for me the lesson would be if I had a mechanical issue to get off the line immediately if not into the runoff area of the track itself.

  • @Bayliss21
    @Bayliss21 Місяць тому

    Hi Scott, this is David, the other rider involved in the crash. First, I'm thankful you're uninjured and your bike escaped serious damage and that you have this video to help me understand what happened. I agree with your analysis and I think this is an excellent learning. One of my long time fears on the track has always been rear-ending someone which is why I always stagger my line on braking zones and leave ample passing room to avoid contacting any other bike. I was making a point of practicing my vision through the apexes that morning and pointing my chin close to my bar, this intentional focus clearly deprioritized my minds peripheral awareness through the corner and resulted in me recognizing you had slowed too late. I hadn't anticipated someone losing power in a corner within my peripheral vision and didn't register the decrease in speed in time. I've done around 800 laps at COTA now over the past few years and this took me by surprise to say the least. Being dragged by the bike was definitely one of the scarier experiences I've had. You were a gentleman at the track and I hope to see you again in the future! I'll definitely be glancing more frequently to the outside in the future and focusing more broadly on peripheral vision as well.

    • @scottsgaragehtx439
      @scottsgaragehtx439 Місяць тому

    • @Bayliss21
      @Bayliss21 Місяць тому

      @@scottsgaragehtx439 the more I've reflected on this the more serendipitous it seems. I can't think of any other corner on the track where a bike can hide on the outside. T13 to T14 is unique because of it being a relatively tight double apex which forces you to bring your vision off the race line in order to stay on it. You also need to roll on throttle to maintain line and nail the T14 apex and your bike so happened to cut power right after I tipped in and began searching for next apex. The closest other corner that comes to mind is the second apex in the carousel but that corner is so wide that your near peripheral catches anyone outside of you. I can't think of any other corner where I could recreate this at least at COTA and the power cut timing was also extremely unlucky having happened after I tipped in and began searching for T14 apex. Glad it all worked out in the end and the bikes are also repairable. I'm defintely going to be glancing between apex and any riders ahead of me in this corner now. Can't trust my peripheral alone because its only good for relative motion and when you're traveling together on a line what my brain saw was an enlarging target not side to side moition (i.e. didn't trigger me to look).
