I hiked up Stone Mountain back in the 1990's. I remember many names carved into the rock along the trail, from the 1840's, 1870's, etc. I'm no fan of racism, but I hope the Confederate monument carved into the mountain never gets destroyed. I found it all meaningful and very sad, thinking about all the people who fought so hard and suffered so much on both sides of the Civil War, and especially sad for the South to lose so much and to ultimately realize that much of what they were fighting for was wrong. I'm sure Lee, who is carved on there, was broken by his own choices.

I was in the Army and went to Korea for about a month in 1986. The whole country (outside of major cities) was quite rustic in those days. Also seemed very militarized... guys with old M1 Garand rifles standing at the ends of every bridge. They were preparing for the 1988 Olympics at that time, lots of new highways being built, and the big stadium. I remember especially, I rode as a guard on a train from Pusan to up near the DMZ, riding in the caboose with the Korean conductor and a coal-burning stove. I suppose everything is more modern and normal in South Korea now.
