There's a reason this is considered a classic, besides the quality of the images, there's the story arch, the question of how he gained access to the subjects, and the additional details Soth adds to towards the end of the book.

I just saw the movie aaaand I loved it bcs I knew what it was based on. The marketing with use of cast and biker hype was misleading which may have led to many disappointed viewers. You have to appreciate the history and tone. Thank you soo much for sharing the book! You can't compare this epic films like those done my SCORSESE. The film is an ode to a slice of Americana.

Thank you, I heard Elizabeth Bishop as you moved through these. Something about her exact eye for the dot of detail unfolding out into metaphysical space, all things joined and separate. Quizzical moments of beauty. Tarkovsky’s Mirror too, just that something imperceptible but you know it somehow.

I think you've been reading my mind this week with your photobook selections! I studied graphic design at Newport College of Art in Wales when David Hurn was running the School of Documentary Photography there. What a magnificent body of work he has and he remains quite an inspiration. Plus he turned me on to Bill Brandt.

Wow, yet another book that meant so much to me in my formative years! I was fortunate that by the time I actually moved to New York in the mid-1980s most of the subway cars were still being heavily tagged and were astonishing to behold. Every ride was an adventure! By the time the 90s came around, the MTA had started a major cleanup of the subway trains and much of the graffiti had disappeared. This book now exists as an important document of art history.

This was the book that changed everything for me when I came across it in my art college library back in 1977. Even today, this book and the works contained are still fresh, exciting and relevant. Long out of print (and currently expensive), I see that it's being reprinted in January, 2025.
