    So nice to see you again, sorry you're still having the nausea, but not long now . I love the baby knits, especially the little Celeste sweater ! The mittens are stunning, I would love to make some, but I'm a bit intimidated by them. Did you use magic loop or small circulars? Take care 💗

      Thank you! Regarding the mittens, they’re really straight forward colourwork wise, I found the thumbs a little tricky though. I always use magic loop as don’t own DPNs and find small circulars very fiddly. Good luck and would love to see the FO if you get around to making them.

    Your vest flares out at the bottom because the armhole ribbing is cinching in fabric at the top of the side so comparatively the bottom has excess width! You could probably block this longer to make it skinnier. When I block I take dry measurements of my garment across the armholes, from armpit to cuff, from arm pit to hem, from armpit to armpit, and from one hem side to the other. I compare this to the pattern measurements available and the measurements I know I prefer from other garments. Then after blocking I make sure to spread my garment to meet my desired measurements and pin it down to those measurements. Also I never let my knitwear hang on any way when I pick it up after soaking. I lift it out of the sink in a giant ball so no weight is being put on the fabric. Also if you are using your washing machine to block I would probably use a garment bag so it isn’t being pulled at all during the cycle.

      @aprilg3193 5 місяців тому

      Just started watching more of this and I would iron with a cloth on top of your knitting because you can easily burn the fiber. You could use a pillowcase or a tea towel!

    I used to have a similar problem with my knits growing too much when blocking, particularly in the sleeves - a few times they came out comically long! A lot of the time it came down to my yarn choices, I found - as others have said superwash yarn grows significantly more. Also not picking up the soaked garment and letting the weight/gravity take over - squeeze it out as much as you can! And remember you don't have to block aggressively, most garments just need to be laid flat unless you need to open up some lace or something

  • @AshleySabbatini
    @AshleySabbatini 7 місяців тому

    Andrea Mowry has a UA-cam channel with knitting advice and answers questions about blocking often, so maybe check out her videos for some info. But one of her main advice is to squeeze out as much water as possible before picking the garment up and then pick it up in a little ball without letting any parts of it fall down and stretch. All your pieces look gorgeous! Glad to see another video of yours.

    Keep in mind that Drops extrafine Merino is a superwash yarn, it will grow even more in blocking, and i think it wouldn't do your cables justice. I did a Baby Ingrid sweater with it, it turned out okay but the texture looks a bit saggy compared to when i knit it in a non superwash yarn (and it is just a baby knit without any weight to it). Your knits are so beautiful! I am in awe of the self drafted wrap! ❤ Also i rewatched the Celeste Saga and you pushed me over the edge: i'm gonna do it! 💪

    I suppose it’s worth taking into account if the gauge swatch grows by say 10% then a large finished unwashed garment could also grow 10%. Not sure.. but good luck in future.

  • @verylikecheryl
    @verylikecheryl 7 місяців тому

    Maybe try not lifting the sopping wet garment. Just pull the plug or tip out the water while the garment is still in the bottom of the vessel and press and rotate the knit against the bottom of your vessel to get as much water out as possible. Form it into kind of like a sausage shape and lift it a little in stages, squeezing and rotating it until you have got enough water out to quickly lift and support the whole thing while it is still in a sausage shape onto the towels to blot it. If you still have quite a lot of water in it at that stage, don’t worry. Better to use multiple towels than to ring it or squeeze it too much. Just be gentle and swift with your handling of it onto the towels. Carefully flatten it out on your towels and blot as usual. Then if it still looks large anywhere, kind of pat, pat, pat it back into a smaller shape on your blocking mat. Good luck x

    • @julieknitsandspins
      @julieknitsandspins 7 місяців тому

      I agree! I squish the most I can then keep it into a ball Then take it to the towel and spread it out a little. Keep the knit small to the next dry towel. Don’t spread out until the blocking mat. Good luck!

  • @QueensYarnBoutique
    @QueensYarnBoutique 7 місяців тому

    Instead of wet blocking, try steam blocking. It doesn't weigh the garment down like wet blocking. I bought a steamer and it was a game changer.

      I agree! She talks about self drafting items so easily but I can’t even begin to imagine where to start. I feel like she really just has an inclination towards knitting, like she gets it and can somehow visualise it. I think it’s amazing and that she’s talented!

      Thank you both for the lovely complements! I'm definitely creatively strong in the fact I can recreate something I can picture. Unfortunately the logical / mechanical / mathematical part of designing I can't comprehend! But regarding self drafting I just keep experimenting and I use loads of free patterns to learn how the patterns are constructed. 👍🏼

    Lovely lines on your cardigan. Great job 👏🏼 It’s so interesting and helpful to hear how you felt more positive about it as it grew. I would like to knit it and now I know to reserve judgement until the button band goes on. Thank you! Recently finding red looks surprisingly good with coral and also with pink-toned browns and beiges like your Novita yarns. And for contrast with a purpley toned royal blue. Hope you have fun styling it. Don’t be scared of a mid-project block. I do it all the time with no problems whatsoever. I’ve done it on Barber cords but also with the needles in. Quick soak, blot with towels, leave to dry and Bob’s your Unble. Be careful with the Stitches sweater. Depending on how much of the text your right arm is covering, it can look like it says TITCHEST 😳 Knitting on my Sonya top by Paulastrickt while watching 💕🧶

    Hi Rebecca, loved this video 😊 and your knits. What method do you use when you need to join in a new ball of yarn? This is something I also am unsure about and if I have done it properly or if it will all unravel on me.

    • @rebeccaswildside
      @rebeccaswildside 10 місяців тому

      Hmm I've never had anything unravel even with a double knot- I try to do magic knot but don't like if the knot is on the right side so I usually do a double knot and then retie it after a few rows to tighten it and make it on the wrong side! I then weave and tie some more knots 😂

    • @rebeccaswildside
      @rebeccaswildside 10 місяців тому

      I wish I could remember but I'm sure I watched so many. The technique itself isn't too tough it's pursuing it and keeping at it. After a whole garment it becomes so much easier! Same with learning the Norwegian purl. I hated it at first but just kept going until it stuck and soon my tension sorted itself out. I don't know if it makes a huge difference but I guess it's important to keep in mind I'm also ambidextrous 😕
