Hi. I am Rachel Billings; Classically trained pianist and also author of All-In-One (and one for ALL) Music Theory books Allinonemusictheory.co.uk. This UA-cam channel is a way of me sharing the enjoyment of music in a relaxed, stress free environment, from home. I also enjoy sharing ocassional "short" snippets of info/ methods for learning pieces of music. Detailed analysis (whilst not a panacea) deepens understanding of the music and helps reveal the composer's intentions whilst adding a level of security to performance, which is why basic knowledge of music theory is so very helpful. For the importance of music theory see my blog aaronpublications.co.uk/2015/03/13/the-importance-of-music-theory/?doing_wp_cron=1729968416.2282381057739257812500
Thank you for taking a look at my channel. I hope you like the music I choose to play (and I'm always open to suggestions of pieces to learn next).

Chopin's Ballade No.4 in F Minor Op.52 (work in progress)
Переглядів 280Місяць тому
Rachel Billings performs Chopin's Ballade No.4 in F Minor Op.52 I may record these ballades again at some point; this is 'take one' and it can be interesting to look back. I feel a certain amount of time is needed between 'learning' a piece and recording to allow for possible change of perspective and difference of interpretation. Ballade No.4 was completed in 1842 in Paris and published in 184...

Chopin Ballade No 1 Op.23 Rachel Billings
Переглядів 2802 місяці тому
Rachel Billings performs Chopin's Ballade No.1 in G minor, Op.23 Chopin started composing this ballade in 1831 during his eight month stay in Vienna (there are sketches dating back to this time). This music is thought to be nostalgic and perhaps a reflection of his loneliness in the city far away from his homeland of Poland. Chopin was living during a transitory phase when he wrote this music, ...

This is an amazing interpretation.
Très bon!
Thanks for your time to listen. It is my favourite of all of Chopin's Nocturnes 🎶
Prophecy: One day the groups of sixths will be played as two groups of three - according to normal performance. You heard it here first.
! 🤔 😅
Excellent Rachel. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Amazing playing 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Real feeling of the stormy weather and wind 💨 So emotional 🥹
Thank you for listening and your encouragment. Your channel is also good 😊
You lose the triplet aspect several times. I know this is popular with modern pianists.
Thanks for your comment. I value all input. I know it's not a perfect performance but regarding omitting the triplets, where were you thinking exactly? There are places such as bars 17 to first part of 18 and bars 19 to first part of 20 where, due to the clear ascending and descending scale I think the implied note grouping is different (to the usual triplets), otherwise melodically the passage wouldn't make sence at all. Similiar scenario at the end of bar 8 whereby due to the descending D flat major scale I think a little artistic licence is allowed (indeed necessary in those situations) so as to make sence of those passages. I don't think Chopin always indicated in minute detail all his intentions on the score (perhaps not in places he didn't think it necessary) but I agree that when Chopin's intentions are clearly marked and unambiguous, they should be observed.
I am thinking the .37 and .50 examples. Etudes are for developing facility with certain difficulties - in this case the sixths, so it really isn't a matter of artistic license in how they are played. But you have a whole lifetime to continue playing the classics.
Not sure what you mean by the "37 and 50" as there are only 36 bars in the piece (?). My reference to "artistic lisence" was in terms to where the accents are placed (in reference to your comment about the triplets groupings/accents). Best wishes, Rachel
Ah, apologies, I just realised you probably meant seconds! Even so, in regards to .37, that is bar 19 to 20 to which I previously referred (the descending scale), I've noticed that pianists interpret those bars differently (some accent in groups of two rather than as triplets). To me it makes more sence to bring out the descending scale but I respect the views of those who think otherwise. Thanks for your observation. Regards, Rachel
Feel like I am on a train in the old west
😅
Sooooo difficult... brava! ❤
Thank you! 😊
this ballad is one of the most difficult works in the piano repertoire, not only from Chopin...it is wonderful that you approached this work and very well played.. !!! congrat.
Thank you, and glad you enjoyed 😊.
Brilliant as always Rachel 👏
Ah it's not always brilliant (practice time is FULL of mess ups) but thanks for your continual encouragement 😊
Good work. Chopin defo likes music more than musicians
big LIKE for this clip !!! super played excellent edit !!!
Thanks so much for watching 👀 , and your kind comment 😊.
it is a particularly difficult piece for any type of hand... this clip is SUPER , very good played !!! Bravo... Congratulations !!!
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed 😊
Thats horrendously difficult.
I found it impossible to fit the whole Coda within a one minute YT short , unlike some others such as Lugansky and Horowitz! Thanks for watching 😊
Excellent Rachel.. 👌
Thanks for watching 👀 😊
Nice one. It is nice to hear the piece played slower. 😊
Love that Ballade well love all his music. Your brilliant if you can play that.
I can read the music very fluently but don't have the virtuosity unfortunately.
Ah, anyone can improve the technical side but just takes lots and lots of work/exercises and much patience...Good you read notes well. Sight reading is not my strong point at all 😬
Beautiful.
Thank you!
second 10
Good try but no 😊
I'm talking about the six note ascending melody first stated in bars 1 to 2. Where does that reappear (transposed)? Bar 10 is where theme 2 reappears but not theme 1. If you want to remind yourself of the beginning of the ballade it can be heard on my UA-cam channel, linked to this clip). Thanks for trying.
Sorry, no it's not 😊
good expression i glad you
Amazing interpretation! you dont have anything to envy to Animenz!
Glad you enjoyed. Thank you 😊
I'm 26 year old and I'm learning this. it's in my head all the time, you play awesome BTW, peace ✌️ 😊❤
Ah, thank you for the encouragment. I know what it's like to have song/piece 'worms' in your head all day long! 😁
I’m 13 and I’m also learning this too 💀👍
But I got ballade 4 and scherzo no2 in my head all the time
@Michaelplayz.l That's great you're learning it now whilst young. I would have been far off that level when I was your age. But I've heard 10 year olds playing it better than me 😅 Enjoy
Amazing playing🌹🌹🌹☺️👏🏼🎶 Heartfelt and emotional ☺️🎶
Brilliant Rachel.😊
Wow 🎹🎹🏆
Beautiful Rachel and excellent playing as always, I will definitely buy the CD when it comes out 😊
🤣 That's very kind of you!

Beautiful Rachel! 😊
Absolutely phenomenal, do you play shows? ❤❤❤
Thanks for listening. No I don't perform in public (my nerves can't handle it) but it's nice to share music in this way...Thanks for being a part and pleased you enjoy. Best wishes, Rachel
Thank you so much.❤❤
Beautifully sung, dear friend! A wonderful feeling! ❤🙏
Really awesome composition! Sounds fantastic.❤❤❤
Chopin's compositions are fantastic. Life is too short as there are too many wonderful compositions to explore! Pleased you enjoyed it 😊
❤❤❤
That was a superb performance Rachel. Thank you.
Thanks as always for listening. Pleased you enjoyed 😊.
Absolutely brilliant and I would much like to hear you play Chopin Etude Op 10, No.3 at some point in the future as I think Chopin himself believed the melody of the piece was the most beautiful that he had composed.
Thank you for the idea. I'll consider doing so. Best wishes, Rachel
It's a Ten from me Rachel. 🎹🛎️
Very good video, my friend.❤❤❤
Very nicely played! Also, by the looks of things, you have quite a wide handspan! Can you reach an 11th?
Hi, thanks. No I can't reach an 11th sadly 😪 Just a tenth, even then sometimes I miss it (so struggle for quick pasages)
...In other pieces I should add, not here (such as bar 179 to 180 in Chopin's 2nd Ballade, the quick tenths played together). In the arpeggio piece it involves a different, action/technique (the notes played after each other) so I can get it then there
@@rachelbillingspiano Ah well a tenth of span is still a tenth ;) I play swing piano so handspan has become a bit of an obsession for me xD
@@rachelbillingspiano Yeah it's a very wide arpeggiation for most of the chords so plenty of room for hand movement.
Love how you added chromatic slides in the left hand! Adds a kind of Spanish, romantic element to the piece.
Thanks. I got the idea for that from Kissin's recording of this (which I love) as he adds in those chromatic notes so I figured there is a bit of artistic license in this particular case to do, in the spirit of the music, rather than sticking rigidly to the score (as I would usually try to). Thanks for watching 👀 😊
Permainan pianonya sungguh indah ❤❤❤🎉
Amazing playing🎉🎉 Thank you for sharing this wonderful music🌹🎶 Have a nice day!☺️🎶
Thank you for listening. Hope you have a good day too 😊 🎶
This is a very refreshing interpretation to hear.
Beautiful Rachel. Thank you.
Thank you for listening 😊
Absolutely brilliant 🎉
Why so fast? I’m sure Chopin wouldn’t complain if many of his pieces included this one, were played at 0.75 of the tempo you chose…. Less impressive maybe More expressive certainly More pleasing to the ear definitely.
I realise the tempo of Chopin's music is a contentious issue! It's a pity that Chopin isn't alive today so that we can double check his intentions. Problem is that Chopin specifically indicated this fast tempo on the score (crotchet equals 112 beats per minute). In addition to the specific metronome marking he ALSO wrote 'Allegro Assai' which means 'very fast'. Pianists are in a tricky situation if we wish to remain authentic to the composer's wishes. Thanks for your comment. There are different views on this and It's a tricky one.
@@rachelbillingspianoyou played brilliantly to me🌹
