Cesar Manrique (1919-1992) was an artist and architect.
His island of birth, Lanzarote, was decisive in his work.
This house, ‘Casa del Volcan’, was built in 1968 on a lava flow from the eruptions of 1730 and 1736.
Out of the dark lava seems to emerge this snow-white house, which moulds itself and insinuates itself into the black loops of magma.

'Calderon Hondo' is the crater of an extinct volcano, has a diameter of about 1.5 kilometres and a depth of 70 metres. It is reached by a comfortable cobbled path that only becomes steep in the last few metres.
