Interesting--pretty much every queer person I know or who comments on this song GETS ITS instantly. But pretty much every straight person guesses wrong at least once and some never seem to figure it out until the end, or later. Which is odd, because I am very straight and "got it" almost instantly. But then, I'm in theatre and surrounded by LGBTQ sensibility which has expanded my outlook. Forgive the ramble, but the coffee is just kicking in. Adore Chappell Roan. Lovely to find your channel while surfing about her and this song.

“California” was actually about the time when she got signed into her first record deal with Atlantic Records. She released an EP with them and when she released Pink Pony Club, it was in the peak of the pandemic, her long term boyfriend at the time broke up with her, and she was dropped from her label. So, she moved back home, spent the next couple of years writing this album and revamping her image and brand and look where she is now! I bet that old record label of hers are kicking themselves now 🤣

I haven't been able to enjoy Gaga for a long time now. Working with gross people... The soundtrack to top gun. All of it just really left me sour on her (and not sour candy lol) Chappell is filling that void for me so hard and perfectly right now it's hard to put into words.

Pink Pony Club is actually one that is not specifically about her own personal experience, but she got the idea for it after spending some nights in gay bars in LA - Chappell herself is from Missouri (not Tennessee), and her mother is very supportive, but she wrote Pink Pony Club about the idea of a southern girl wanting to go and find the LA queer club culture to be a safe space for her exploring herself. And re: California - she's been trying to do this for 10 years. She was signed by Atlantic in 2015 but by 2020 they dropped her so she went through this whole struggle of thinking that she had completely failed at making this happen. And yeah, with covid/lockdown and everything she had to move back home to her family and work in a drive-thru and all of this, so California is from around that period where she ended up having to decide she had to move back to Missouri.

this is the first video of yours i've ever seen and i absolutely love your vibe/energy so much! the "i can feel myself becoming more annoying because of how good this is" when listening to after midnight was so real lol. i usually am not a fan of slower songs which is why a lot of albums aren't no skip to me, but this album is definitely a no skip album for me - hell, picture you is by far my favourite song on the entire album which surprised me even (hot to go and guilty pleasure are close second and third though). overall a really fantastic album and i find new things to love about it every time i listen.

You said that so many love songs are straight coded. I totally get what you mean. But Chappell is so good that straight people empathize with what she's singing about. I think this is why she's drawing such a huge crowds. That and of course her voice. I feel for her even though her experiences are not within my frame of reference. I've never seen somebody this talented just explode into superstardom overnight. And I've been seriously listening to music for over 50 years.

I don't think this album is even up for album of the year at the Grammys. It sure should be. Personally its only competition is TTPD. Best debut album I ever heard.

Picture You, the song you thought might be in a bath COULD BE. It's about masturbation. 😄. A beautiful song about getting yourself off. California is basically a sequel to Pink Pony Club (although she changes her home state from Tennessee to where she's actually from... Missouri). She only became an overnight success after a decade. She got a record contract young, moved to California, lost her record contract, then had to move back home to Missouri and work normal jobs again. She crawled back out of that hole and eventually started touring (yes, with drag queens) and got her album out. The rest is history.

I'm so glad you liked this! Chappell Roan is iconic and this album was so good! If you're looking for more suggestions in the same vein, consider trying Superache by Conan Gray! That's 100% his best album and it's equally phenomenal!!
