Where can I buy the singer 99 in the us? Similar machines are pretty cheap back home but getting them delivered to the us almost triples their price :(
Local thrift stores, eBay, Facebook Marketplace, and Craigs List are all good places to look. You could also check your local paper's for sale ads. Maybe, place a wanted ad to let potential sellers know you are looking. Thanks for watching 🙂

Just been looking on eBay at these machines, this has been very useful, thank you! Do you know much about the Essex miniatures?
Apart from being similar to the Singer 20, not really. These two websites might be able to help: www.singersewinginfo.co.uk/toys/essex and sewalot.com/essex_sewing_machine.htm Thanks for watching 🙂
@@SimplyStitchy Thanks for the info!! I bought one on impulse yesterday - £32 on eBay with all the original instructions, case etc. I hadn't realised it was almost identical to the Singer 20!! But a lot cheaper which is to be expected. The websites you share say that the Essex is well regarded which is a relief as I already bought it 😅I can't wait to try it out.
Good to know before purchasing items. Thank you!😊
You're welcome! I'm glad you found it helpful! 😊 Thanks for watching 🙂
The kittys so cute 😊
I've never seen a red eye 66 in the UK, I think it's just the US version that had it. I could be wrong of course, but there's no e on eBay etc over here. Likewise, the 201s in the UK mostly have the light on the back, and I think I've only ever seen a couple with front light on ebay when I was looking for one. Are you hoping to get a 201? They're lovely sewers, really smooth. V heavy though!
As far as I know, Redeye decals were only found on Singer 66 in the US. The UK version of the 66 had the Lotus decals. Yes, I'm looking for a 201. But then I'm also looking for a 500, 600E, and a 401 lol... I'm just looking for sewing machines 😆
If you put a hand crank machine in a treadle, do you have to take the crank off? I'm thinking you'd get the best of both worlds, speed with the treadle, and the fine control of the hand crank. I suspect the crank will be in the way or cause drag.
I have heard that some of Singer's machines were issued as convertibles. They had the option of being either treadle or hand crank. This blog post on the Quilting Forum seems to back that up: www.quiltingboard.com/vintage-antique-machine-enthusiasts-f22/1901-singer-27k2-convertible-hand-crank-treadle-t237855.html I'm not sure if both hand crank and treadle could be installed at the same time. Or if one had to be taken off before using the other... I'm now looking for a convertible sewing machine to test the theory. Just another machine to add to an ever-growing list 😆
I need help identifying my vintage sewing machine. I have the model number and know the year it was made but idk anything else about it. Made in 1948 and has AH in the beginning of the number. Thank you for all your knowledge here. Very interesting!
I'd need to see photos of the machine and also have the full serial number to be able to help. The AH at the start of the serial number indicates that the machine was possibly built at Elizabethport, New Jersey, but I can't tell much more than that from the info given. Look up the full serial number here: ismacs.net/singer_sewing_machine_company/serial-numbers/singer-ah-series-serial-numbers.html
Hello again, sorry to bother you but I would like to ask your advice. I just learned why my 1945 model 66 looks different. It has a crinkle finish because of the war and metal use restrictions. Should I still put new decals on it? I can see they had been there and the front Singer decal is still fair. Do you think the decals will apply as they should. Thank you, Diana
The decals on crinkle finish machines were always a bit more... minimal than other machines. Check out this post over on the SingerSewingInfo site: www.singersewinginfo.co.uk/blackside I personally wouldn't renew the decals. There are a couple of reasons. The first, replacing decals usually involves taking off the shellac and priming the base. It sounds easy but if taking off the shellac damages the crinkle finish... I don't know how easy that will be to replace. There is a risk you might end up having to repaint the whole machine with a different finish. The second, the more restoration work you do, the more history you wipe away. Over-restoring can decrease the value of vintage and antique items dramatically. Ultimately, it's your machine, so it's up to you. But sometimes you need to think about the old adage, if it ain't broke - don't fix it. Hope that helps.
I noticed that Roger Wilco's "finger" of his hand crank is a bit clacky against the gaps between the wheel spokes. I put a bit of thin leather on mine to make it fit better. Helen Howes has an article on how to do this on her website, under How to service a hand crank. There's a bit about making and sewing on a leather ring. I'll paste a link in another comment, but I'm mindful it might be blocked.
Looks like one of my usual machines that I work on. These early singers are amazing because with a good clean and a drop of oil you're back in business. I've just done a lotus 66 that had become a perch for pigeons! Now she looks Fabulous and sews like a dream! The moral here is clean and oil your machine regularly, they may be bomb-proof but they still need tlc! Great video, will watch this space hoping to see the final result.😊😊😊❤
Thanks so much. Love the fact you have saved this machine.
Nurse, 0.5L of I(ntra)V(ein) kerosene immediately. !!!! The patient is motionless
My machine exactly like that was born in 1925, someone found it in a storage unit, the case not in good shape, but I got the machine working well, except when I first start sewing it doesn't want to move well and stitches are tight but then it smooths out. Any suggestions for that? Love love love these old machines!
Couple of things to try - add some lubricant to the motor. There should be two ports - one at each end of the motor. They look like little holes. Use this: amzn.to/3YWgQU9 its specially formulated grease designed for Singer motors. Just a drop each side should do. The second, oil the stitch length adjuster with sewing machine oil amzn.to/3CIMkp1 (amazon affiliate links)
It's amazing how resilient these old machines are.
They really are! 🙂 Thanks for watching 🙂
Greetings from Central Valley, California, USA. I love your channel. Always good information and demos. Thanks so much.
You're welcome! I'm glad you're enjoying the channel! 🙂
She's alive!! My 1937 99 is still going strong, she was my grandmothers machine and I sew with her everyday. I've taken the feed dogs out to give them a good clean on occasion, pretty easy job.
Could you hoover the dust, before the brushing? I have a 99k from 1926, she's a lovely old girl. Good to see your tenacity and patience in rehabilitating yours. Nice to see the cat helping!
You can but you need to be a bit careful. You want to make sure the hoover tool you use doesn't touch the surface of the machine. You also want to make sure the suction doesn't drag the dust across the surface... The strength of the vacuum might cause dust particles to scratch the paintwork.
Thanks @@SimplyStitchy.
Thank you for this great post. I am well informed on what bobbins I need to purchase for my machine.
I have a 1965 603e thats perfectly retrofitted to a treadle cabinet. It has all 21 original cams, 12 bobbins, all the original feet and throat plates and the best part is, it was free! I really want to love it. I am excited because the throat space is double that of the 4 inches I get with my stupid round shaped brother, and its all metal. My problem is, I can wind the bobbin just perfectly, but when I go to sew, my top thread winds around the bobbin too. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. I've been working on it all day, cleaning, rethreading, reading and rereading the manual. I guess I will be hauling it to the repairman to see if he can service it for me.
Are you disengaging the bobbin winding mechanism? There should be a little white lever in the bobbin area with a target on it. When you push the throat plate closed, that little lever should spring back from the left. When it does that, you're in sewing mode again. If it isn't springing back, you might need to give it a helpful but gentle shove to the right. Give the bobbin area a bit of a clean, there might be some lint stuck in there blocking the works.
I did up a 201k from eBay for 30 pounds. It was full of brown gunge, dead spiders and the feed dogs were stuck down with gummy brown goo. I've spent ages with cotton buds and a screw driver and de-gooed, and she works nicely now. But I bought a replacement hand crank and a spool pin, and had to disassemble and oil everything to get to there. Oh, and the case was falling apart and I bought new ply for the base and screwed and glued it together. But it was worth it for a lovely 201. And I've learnt how to do maintenance and am less fearful of taking bits off to clean or replace. UA-cam is a great resource, Harry Rogers has a couple of helpful videos on the 201 if anyone needs help with theirs, and of course, Ollie @simply_stitchy for publishing all of hers! Keep up the good work
I have this exact sewing machine, so this was fun to watch and compare. I recently tested out the Side Cutter II that I picked up for $4 at a thrift store, and it worked on mine, which makes me wonder if it had some updates made to it. The instructions are very much the same for the II and just as funny, but it also mentions using the widest stitch setting. My impression when I first came across "start sewing from the below of the needle" was maybe they were trying to say to anchor the needle into the fabric before you start to sew? I could be totally wrong.
Thanks, that was helpful. I'm looking at a Singer 201 in a treadle table similar to yours in a local auction, and was wondering how difficult it was to use. You made it look simple. How slow can you go? Did it take you a while to get the rhythm of the pedal right? I guess it's like a car, eventually you learn to push the clutch down without thinking about it when you change gear, and treadling is similar?
The more practice you have, the easier it will be to go real slow. In the meantime, the great thing with a treadle is, you can turn the hand wheel instead of pedaling to get a speed of one stitch at a time. Yes, it takes time to get the rhythm. It's just practice and use. Bit more like learning how to ride a bike. Thanks for watching and I hope you win the auction! The 201 is a great machine!
Thanks for that! I'll see if I can buy it and get it working. I've got a 99K and a 201K both hand cranks, and a brown 1970s electric monstrosity already, hopefully I can get the treadle to join them. Thanks again and happy sewing@@SimplyStitchy
Thanks. I jumped throwing my phone running to my brother heavy duty when I saw you explain about the two levels of presser foot😂. I was trying to sew a swatch of a very thick fabric that maybe equal to your 6 layers. By the way, I had to use a walking foot and slow down. I watched the whole video. It is nice seeing someone more experienced than you compare machines and answering questions that give insights into the sewing world. You have so much love for sewing. Your sharing proves that. Thank you very much, you helped me get that fabric under the presser foot and controle the volume. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
You're welcome! 😊 Thanks so much for watching! 🙂
I just just got mine yesterday! ❤
I have a hand crank sewing machine. 9:17 'The problem with lights that you add after the sewing machine has been manufactured is they to be electric'... Ummm...my light is either the sun or an oil lamp... Unless I am at uni. Yes, I take my hand crank sewing machine with me to uni. My sewing teacher loves it that I do. At the first meeting there is always a lot of interest in my 'unique' sewing machine. I have a wheelie to transport it to uni every week, just put it in the wheelie, close it up and head for the bus stop. But, the thing that is really nice...I am the only one that uses my sewing machine, so unlike the 'shared' ones we have on campus, I do not have to worry that someone did something to it...Apparently one time someone somehow lost a bobbin case for one of the machines,.
Here in PA, I followed all your instructions to find the year and model number for my machine, AG521352,as you described on a previous video. When I pull up the Ismac’s site, it tells me singer has removed the info. I tried everything and cannot get the info. Your video that I just watched indicates that I have a model 66 and I think it was made 1945. I started my sewing life with a brand new touch and sew bought in Oceanside, California, about 1965. After I wore it out, I was told it could not be repaired. Hmmm? Anyway, do you think it is now impossible to get correct info about the old machine?
I've checked the serial number. It was allocated to a Singer 66, August 29 1945, part of a batch of 10000. So you are spot on! The information on Ismacs is the same information that would have been previously seen on Singer's site. As far as I know, Ismacs has the complete database. Or at least, as complete as it can be. Even when it was on the Singer site, there were gaps in the information available and some typos too!
Many thanks! I saw this in an old garage that was part of an antique store. I bought it for $35. And then I realized it was the same one my mom had and that I had learned to sew on. I have worn out three machines sewing for my five daughters. Thanks so much! Blessings
WAS 2:52 / 13:57. A treasure Trove I can't find it. What I got is close but all the numbers are a mess and a blur
Have you tried rubbing some sewing machine oil into the serial number? It might help clear it up a little bit. Also, I take a photo of the number with my phone so I can make it bigger. That can help a lot too!
Cool video, very helpful. My mom has an old Simplex which is quite similar and I just replaced the belt. Only problem is now it doesn't seem to fold up into anymore. :)
Do you mean it won't fold into the cabinet? Are you disengaging the belt before you fold the machine away?
I have been having a good nosy at your videos! Thank you, so helpful. I recently got a beautiful 1957 Singer 99k, she seems to be running just 👌🏽since fussing with the tension unit. I am just going to get a service done now to check the wiring.
Cool! I think you'll be impressed with the 99! It's a great machine! Thanks for watching 🙂
Hi how can I get a hold of you, I have a question, I need the hole bobbin winder for my dinger , can you help me out any suggestions where or who I can call to buy this part, if you could let me know on the commend section thank you so much, I have a singer class28 ❤❤❤❤❤🎉
eBay is a good source of spare parts for Singer sewing machines. Depending on where you are in the world, you can also try a couple of websites. Vintagesingerparts.com is one. Do a google search for Singer 28 Bobbin Winder and you should get some results coming up in your area.
Does a walking foot work on your singer 15?
Yes. I have a video on the channel showing it in action: ua-cam.com/video/ksb7fzgZztE/v-deo.htmlsi=mElnZni6W_QrTz6l time stamp 06:59. Thanks for watching 🙂
I thought I had a 201 but idk it threads more like yours because it has the extra leverage after the tensioner know🤔🤷♀️
The 201 is a later version of the 66 so they are incredibly similar. Check out this blog post: vssmb.blogspot.com/2011/07/visual-guide-to-identifying-singers_30.html it might help you identify your machine a bit easier. Thanks for watching 🙂
@SimplyStitchy just read your blog and took the quiz. I guess it'd a 66! I previously looked up the modle number, (AK877524) and had thought u identified it as a 1952 201 but guess I am incorrect?!
I just fixed this machine. I want to learn how to use it
Check out my playlist for videos on how to use vibrating shuttle machines : ua-cam.com/play/PLv_H1aiWesm7-uwJg_nWfKnMuFIRQeidH.html Thanks for watching 🙂
Its a 128! well taught
Correct! 😉 You're welcome! Thanks for watching 🙂
Lol! That was pretty funny about the lights.
Lower the tension so it doesn't buckle the fabric. That's you're fault, not the machines!
Timestamp 07:39 - or thereabouts... I explain why I'm not messing with the tension on either machine. Oh, FYI - it's 'your' not 'you're'. Thanks for watching.
I have my great grandma's 1910 singer 99 treadle machine, and I've followed all these instructions, the bobbin thread catches and come up fine. But when I sew, no matter how far I adjust my tension in either direction, I end up with the top thread in a huge mess of loops on the back and it won't even hold a bobbin thread in place. I don't know how to trouble shoot this.
When you start sewing, do you hold on to the two threads? These older machines like a bit of tension on the first couple of stitches. So lightly, hold the threads to the back of the machine, just for 2-4 stitches, then let go. Backtack to hold the start of the seam and then sew the seam. Let me know how you get on.
@SimplyStitchy thanks, I will try that!
Wll I tried it several times and it did not help unfortunately. Thanks for the suggestion though!
@@urmysunshine90 OK - let's check out some more options. What thread are you using? Criss cross or straight wound? ua-cam.com/video/-RmuhyQzaNU/v-deo.htmlsi=0YnETFIZzhQNLeyc Is this your first time treadling? ua-cam.com/video/jSyOCygieYA/v-deo.htmlsi=fZnZ7lkB3UvR4utm Are you sure you have the thread in all the top thread guides? Even the little check spring on the tension assembly? Are the tension discs clean? If you have any dental floss, gently pull some through the tension discs - in the direction the thread would go - to see if there is any lint stuck in there. I know you said the bobbin picks up OK, but are you sure it's in the right way around? Is it the right bobbin. It should be a class 66. ua-cam.com/video/SFPeUuxMxP0/v-deo.htmlsi=B4fxGlUlmpRTWbvT Is the needle in flat to right side? Are you threading the needle from left to right? Is it a standard class 15 needle? (130/705H) Let me know if any of that helps. If not, we'll try something else.
@SimplyStitchy it is straight wound coats and Clark cotton thread. This is my first time treadling. I am fairly certain the machine is threaded correctly. I have watched a number of threading tutorials very closely and it seems to follow exactly. I actually cleaned and oiled this machine and cleaned the tension disks so I know there is no lint. Its definitely properly hitting the check spring. The bobbin came with the machine and looks just like the one in your video but has no markings. I am pretty sure it's in correctly having followed the steps in your video several times just to double check I didn't have it in wrong. It could still be wrong though I guess. The needle is in correctly, I am not sure if it's class 15. It's just a normal sewing machine needle.
I can't get the treadle to engage the needle. I have to physically turn the wheel to make the needle to go up and down and then when I treadle it still doesn't engage the needle. I've checked the cord to make sure it was neither too tight nor too loose. What else can I try?
Without seeing what is happening it's a bit hard to say. Is the stop motion screw engaged? Try turning the stop motion screw to the right and try again. Is the treadle belt slipping? If it is, you might need a new belt or it might need tightening. There needs to be a bit of slack but not too much. Check out this video to see how it should look: ua-cam.com/video/dRZ1og4j0ME/v-deo.htmlsi=Q1OAR-9TwRL4Lw52 When was the last time you oiled the machine and the treadle mechanism? It could need oiling.
Can you help me foun this information on my late grand mother sewing machine.. Copper emblem outside the body 15F Serial no on the body bottom 173602 6
Thanks for the helpful video. I collected my first treadle machine yesterday, and I think that "Nellie" (named after her original owner) is going to be a bit of a project 😮. So far you've helped me identify her as 99k and the serial number suggests she was made in 1928 in the Clydebank Kilbowie Road factory. I will be watching other videos along my journey getting her running again after spending 40 years as hall table. Could you show how to disengage the belt? Also, does your "Grandma" have a key to lock the cabinet? If so, could you show the shape in a future video please?
I have this video showing how to disengage the belt with the belt shifter: ua-cam.com/users/shortsnyQ71ujmCAs?feature=share Unfortunately, Grandma doesn't have a key. But, even if she did, the key isn't necessarily going to be the same as the one for your machine. There are different treadle cabinets out there and the key you need is specific to the cabinet you have. Check out this link www.treadleon.net/sewingmachineshop/keys/keys.html hopefully, it will help you find the type of key you are looking for. Thanks for watching 🙂
Thank you for the interesting and informative video. As to parts exchange, what about the VS3? Thank you.
The VS3 is about the same size as the 28 or 128 so, in theory, the parts they have in common should fit. However, I recommend checking the measurements before purchasing any spare parts just to make sure. Thanks for watching. 🙂
Thank you so much for explaining this!!
You're welcome! Thanks for watching! 🙂
Hi! I could really use some help with a vintage sewing machine 😅. I recently got a Anker automatic rz deluxe and i don't know how to make it work. Btw I don't have the cable for it. I don't know how to take care for it exactly, like what oil to use and so on. After a few days of trying, i got the thread in the right place, but the problem now is that the weel doesn't make the rest of the machine work. Could you please help me? 😅🥰
Hi, I don't have any Anker machines, but this guy might be able to help: ua-cam.com/video/55iM9abAEJY/v-deo.htmlsi=vMMpWUOS38Tb5_m9 As far as oil is concerned, the only oil you should use on a sewing machine is sewing machine oil: amzn.to/3NGYm4y
@@SimplyStitchy Alright. Thank you! 🫶🏻
Anyone have the 636 model and recommend it?
The Singer 636 is part of the 600 series of Touch & Sews. If you are looking for a Touch & Sew, then it's the 600 series you need to go for. As long as the 636 is in good working order, with all its parts intact, there's no reason why it won't be just as reliable and usable as my 640. Having said that, there are two caveats. First, models made towards the mid to late 60s have a hybrid mix of metal and plastic gears. The closer you get to the 70s, the more plastic gears start creeping in. So check for plastic and make sure its OK. Replacing gears is possible, but it isn't a 5-minute job. Second, how has the original owner cared for it? In my experience, any sewing machine, regardless of age or plastic content, will be... less than fully functional if it has been abused. So make sure you see it working and listen out for any clunks, bangs, or whines. It should run and sound smooth. Other than that, as far as actual sewing goes, the 636 is a decent machine with some cool features. Hope that helps.
I am looking up a machine with a Singer JA535241 but the listing doesn't have JA's listed, only J's.
JA serial numbers were issued by the St John's factory in Canada: ismacs.net/singer_sewing_machine_company/singer_dating_by_serial_number.html between 1924 - 1936. There isn't much information about JA machines but you might find this article interesting: www.singersewinginfo.co.uk/stjohns
