Hi, I'm Melissa! I’ve always been a crafty person, and my grandmother taught me to sew when I was 9. I’ve dabbled in various fiber and textile art hobbies growing up, and began costuming as a young adult. I started weaving in 2016 and fell in love with it. There’s so much to learn with so many different styles, techniques, and methods to try. This channel is a passion project born from my love of the hobby, a desire to share this information, and a hope to make this knowledge more accessible. I hope to provide information that is not easily found and answer questions commonly asked in a learning environment that is kind, open, accepting, and without judgement.

Inspiration Series: My Signature Plaid
Thank you all for your patience during my video upload hiatus, it’s been a rough few months with several stresses and losses. I’m getting back on track, but didn’t have any new footage recorded. Suggested by one of my subscribers, this is a video of how I turn an inspiration into a finished project. Depending on if people like this, I may make it a periodic series. Please let me know what you think in the comments!
This is my signature plaid, inspired by a poem, and the steps I took to develop and complete this project.

How to ENJOY Warping Instead of Dreading It
Thank you I've done every form of weaving but this particular form has always eluded me now I understand
As a beginner this is a godsend, thank you for your effort.
Your teaching style is perfect. This was brilliant. Thank you. I had been wondering how the patterns are made. Now I have an inkling.
Thanks for breaking it down. This is very easy to digest.
I am so glad that your video came up in the "you may like..." list. I've been wanting to learn tablet weaving since I attended my first SCA events just over 40 years ago, but when I had the time to learn, I couldn't find a teacher, and when I found a teacher, work and family obligations wouldn't allow me to take the class. Now I'm waiting for my tablet cards to arrive in the mail, and thanks to your video, I have a much better idea of why behind the how to manipulate the threads, and it will hopefully help me understand my weaving and not just blindly follow directions. Thank you so much! 🙂
I really appreciate how you chose to phrase and describe the key points at play, avoiding ambiguous terms or using one word to mean multiple different things - it really made all of this easier to follow
This is very helpful. I just could not figure out how tablet weaving worked and now it makes much more sense. I love the kitty cameos!
This is a great video! I teaching weaving on frame and table/floor looms and was asked a question about tablet weaving... something I had never heard about. So thank you for this instructional video, I'm going to give it a try!
Yes, please do! 🎉 It’s a lot of fun.
Thank you for the great explanation. Do you know why tablet weaving is only used for narrow bands? Is it difficult to scale up?
Ooo, excellent question! I have seen a post where a student did their final project (or maybe thesis?) creating a super-wide tablet woven piece, so it is possible. In my experience I think there’s a couple of reasons: 1. The number of tablets you have to manipulate becomes cumbersome and time-consuming. Tablets are great for small detail work. Much more than 2 inches wide you have to start moving the tablets in sections because they simply don’t all fit in your hands. There comes a point where a multi-shaft loom or pickup stick or tapestry bobbins become the better and faster tools for the job. 2. The finished fabric is 4 layers thick and tends to be a bit stiff. This works really well for sturdy straps, belts, and bands. A wide piece would turn out like a very dense, stiff rug. If that’s what you want, a bigger loom again becomes the better, faster, and easier tool.
@@impendinglooms That makes so much sense! Thank you very much indeed!
Exactly what I needed as a new inkle weaver. Thank you!
Very clear...ty!!
That was great, thank you! Very helpful! I have an old loom that I am getting to know. I know nothing about all of this and this was a big help!
Oh, how exciting! Welcome to your new addiction…. I mean hobby! 😉😂
❤
Artiza Nelu I have no idea how to help u say that in text forme 😭 Tesar (s sound not z) Same for this one idk how to explain it, but Google translate can give u a good example
Thank you! I used your suggestion and tried a translation app. Here’s what it gave me: are-tee-zah(t) nee-loos son-drehl tees-sahr go-beh-lohn
Thanks
Thank you! 💗💗💗
This is so useful...I simply did not understand how this worked before.
nice video! good explanation.
No impressed. Nothing helpful to see here - no detailed enough.
This is so helpful, thank you so much!
None of it would have made sense without the cat though
😹 She’s incredibly helpful!
I would like to learn how to do operate a loom like this so - subscribed. Btw How long does it take to set up for say a 3 colour tarten ?
Thank you! I have plans to make a beginner basics video series for floor looms. How long it takes to set up is variable and depends on a lot of factors: thread type/size, project width, number of ends (individual threads), type of loom, weaver experience, if you have a helper, and more. It is the longest and (I think) most complex part of weaving. Mine can take anywhere from 8 hours to 24 hours from measuring the first thread to ready to weave. I rarely do it all at once, and usually break it up across several days or a couple of weekends. It’s the foundation of your whole project, and if it’s done well the weaving part is easy. I can teach almost anyone (including small children and inebriated adults lol) a basic weave in 5 minutes. Teaching to warp (the set up process) takes weeks or months of practice.
Lovely podcast - the plaid is wonderful as is the way you described the process.
Excellent video! This is the best explanation of how to test length and tie heddles. Very clear! I will be happy to refer people to it!
Thank you! 🥰 Yes, please do!
@@impendinglooms I just added it to the Resources page on my blog.
Agreed. Every other explanation I've seen just tells you to measure using the top peg and the heddle peg. But with this explanation, I can see how that may not always work!
Oh my gosh, this video was wonderful! I especially loved your comments about designing the plaid pattern with the repeats. I feel like seeing your way of thinking is very useful for me as a beginner to develop my own critical and creative thinking! But truly, thank you for sharing your entire process. Looking forward to more videos, whenever life grants you the space to make them :D
Thank you for the idea! This was a great way to get back into the swing of things with images I already had. 💗
So sorry for your loss, but what a beautiful thing to come out of your mourning and respect for the lost. ❤
Thank you so much easy to follow and so informative
Im so happy this is the first video I clicked to try to learn this skill.
Thank you so much. You have done a great job of demystifying tablet weaving. The exaggerated props really cleared up what is going on.
Thank you for a great video, finally someone I understand after struggling with similar videos for about a year.❤
❤Thanks for your effort, teaching us this, ❤❤
💯💯💯❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
This has been so helpful, thank you!
This was so easy to follow! Thank you for sharing this and for slowly explaining everything step by step! And that cat definitely needs to learn how to behave in front of the camera haha.
😹😹😹
How do I read Linda Hendricksons patterns. They don't seem to have a threading key.
I’m planning a tutorial for the double turn double faced style of weaving she frequently uses. Thanks for the question! It made me realize I should show at least a couple different ways those patterns might be written. Linda Hendrickson has a PDF for sale on her website that goes into detail about her pattern instructions. I will need to get permission from her before sharing info about her copyrighted material. I may make a video tutorial on her method if she consents to it.
@@impendinglooms Awesome, thanks!
Subbed! This was super helpful and concise, exactly what I needed!
Thank you so much for this video! I saw a demonstration of card weaving on a dress hem and thought, "I need to learn more about this." Definitely saving your video. Also, as someone who can struggle to understand spoken words, thank you for the captions. They really do help a lot ❤
You are very welcome! The auto-captions sometimes get it so very wrong, especially with uncommon weaving terms. I also sometimes need captions, so I get it! 💗
Excellent. Thanx!❤
I subscribed for the cat booty! And your content.
🤣
Excellent..thanks..and I wnat to ask about letter weaving.. how shall we start to weaving
I have a video planned for that soon. The technique I'll be showing is called double turn double faced, and it is the same technique Linda Hendrickson uses in her books.
Aw helz yeah
Ma'am, I hate lifting weights, too.
😂
Thank you, that is so kind! 🥰 I’m so glad you liked it. Returning love from Texas! 💖
So helpful! Thank you!
A much needed video. Thank you so much. 🙏
Hi there ! Thanks for the many variations in the video. How do you introduca a new weft tread when the shuttle is empty ?
I use both the old and new weft together for 2-3 picks, then just snip the tails lose to the edge.
extremely helpful, thank you
