interesting video. im actually making an album which uses some elements of vaporwave right now, so i'll definitely keep this in mind. i know this terms been used to death, but i completely agree that modern vaporwave almost exists as its own distinct simulacra where it no longer is like this hypnagogic memory of what the internet meant before it was what it is today but instead is simply just a style of music which people can make which has its own distinct traits. That being said, I don't personally feel like it's even necessarily a bad thing yk. The style still can be interpreted either way, and honestly I think it can be equally valid to make an album which is vaporwave for its focus on a vaporwave aesthetic, or especially an album which is not vaporwave but understands vaporwave exclusively as an aesthetic for its own goals. Losing the picture doesn't have to be a bad thing as long as people are still painting new ones i guess. the recursions series i'm doing right now actually tries to try to wrestle with the whole concept of recursive aesthetics losing their purpose and how more and more abstractions in consciousness need to be developed to continually observe it. I only got one out right now, but still. Losing the picture doesn't have to be a bad thing if new pictures are still being created and there are still people observing art through an original lens, or at least resources to understand said aesthetics. Similarly, the idea that art which focuses purely on aesthetics being related to capitalism is very interesting to me. I forget where I heard it, but I remember reading something a long time ago that said something along the lines of "one of the main goals of neoliberalism towards art is to cement the collective idea that all good art was made in the past" and thats because it A. makes the art unquestionable and easy to manipulate, B. it makes the art impossible to ever live up to by giving it legitimacy in a way which can only be challenged with seniority and C. it subconsciously reinforces the idea that we are existing at the end of time and that all problems which exist nowadays are unavoidable and unquestionable. It does this by hiding any signs of progress until its already been accepted by basically everyone anyway. tying this back to nostalgia based aesthetics, it almost seems to me like when art attempts to replicate a feeling of nostalgia, it is doing it in such a way which reinforces this neoliberal lie which idolizes the past or feelings in the past because they are unquestionable and because we don't want to live in the present and try to interpret the modern aesthetics because even modern aesthetics can't even be recognized as them until looking back on it, and because modern aesthetics purposefully are hidden. especially when you can manufacture the aesthetic without even making an effort to observe it, you in a way deflect from the fact that its clearly hazy and give it a power and meaning which is entirely detached from reality, but in that way only services the non-present. It allows you to live in the past without ever acknowledging it in a way, and similarly hide from the present whilst still accepting it. you still are taking in all of the elements of modern life but don't need to face any of it's real emotional impact, dulling you against it. this isn't a bad thing when its observed, but when its ignored its totally dangerous. btw, do you make music?
