What better setting than the majestic stairwell of the Hotel Max Hallet, which, according to architect Victor Horta, was the very essence of the house, to link Art Nouveau with the late-medieval polyphony of Ars Nova and Ars Subtilior?
Graindelavoix presents a fascinating selection of works from this repertoire by composers such as Guillaume de Machaut, Jacob de Senleches, Matteo de Perugia, Guillaume Malbecque, Matthew de Sancto Johanne and others. The unruly, contradictory modernity of their interpretation resonates with the anti-functionalist, ornamentalist and ambivalent nature of the architectural space.
