The companion novels are whack (at least the first ones), but DO provide a ton of context you don't get in the main novels. Night of Knives made me understand the founders of the empire much better and Return of the Crimson Guard wraps up some of the main plotlines that leaves at a cliffhanger in the Bonehunters. I would've been less confused if I read them in between the novels than reading them after
Great video. You have to be realistic about these things
Jeez man, I've read gardens of the moon 3 times and pondered for about 6 months, now I've read deathouse gates twice and the year is suddenly over. I'm still missing info. I like it but I'm not ready to move to book 3 yet.
0:48 my first book that i bought, not read bought was dune and that is exactly what that does and I thought that was like the meta was how it is done and i have been a little wrong so far 😂
I fail to see why so many people consider Kruppe such an amazing character. I missed it
I’m about to start my 6th or 7th listen thru Still picking up bits I missed
is it flintlock fantasy? because the attire of some of the characters seem like post rennaisance like 18th century france or england? thanks anyway
Please come back
@@EmperorJohn Some day...
about to start 'The Last Argument of Kings' and I cannot wait, the first 2 books were great and i read them so fast, great great story! funny as hell
I found when I didn't understand what was going on was just to read on ...then go back and re read to understand a couple chapters later
Can I enjoy Malazan with aphantasia
Are there many series with detectives who are also wizards?
Come back bro
Say one thing about this video. Say that this is the best video to explain why someone should read "The First Law"! This video is how I am going to sell to other to read this series!
Delightful. Best big review ever. I’m an old fart, rarely listening to audiobooks, but you’ve inspired me to try it out. Did watch Buffy and Angel through, but only once. Wouldn’t mind a bi more on the side..
pooka will never die
The audio books are so well done, I wish that Amazon would just make each chapter into an episode and add animation. I’m sure that would blow Rings of Power out of the water at a negligible fraction of the cost.
First law IS grimdark. Grimdark is anything raw, nihilistic, violent, pessimistic, bloody and usually set in dystopian medieval worlds with little magic and lots of blodshells.
For me the hard time about Malazan is Erickson's writting. Its not per se bad its just that at times I dont even know who is talking or seems like im in a white room, with characters talking in the void. Too much abscense of descriptions. I dont even know how the characters look like most of the time and thus not so invested in some of them. Also the fact that I hate reading battles, and even if Erickson is among the best writting them they are sooo dense. Specially for me book 2 and some sections of book 3 (that I just finished), had been hard. Contrary to popular belief, I kinda loved the first book. Third is also nice, second I didnt really love it except for some sections (Felisin and the priest), and the ending.
I adore Michael, he's is such a fantastic character
A succinct and honest pitch. I wish I could put it so eloquently and efficiently to get my friends on the Malazan hype train
I came to Dresden in an unorthodox manner: the TV series. Then I discovered there are books. There Are Books! And while I do have the series on DVD, I have to stop myself from critiquing the eps for what they did to certain characters ...<laughter> Although, I have to admit, Joanne Kelly as Bianca was great, but as Lara Wraith ... wow! That would have been brilliantly terrifying! I am not holding my breath, but I am hoping Butcher and I survive long enough to get through the three book finale of Dresden's story.
i love those books, have them both on paper and audiobook. the narrator does such a good work of conveying emotion and character. to this day i remember a " i hate you" line from best served cold, you can say it gives me ...the shivers
I fucking loved the show lol do you people just want the same exact story, just in show form? You have to give it area to breath. It's like the Cowboy Bebop show, but done by competent at the time people who didn't wormship money lol
You deserve many more subscribers!
So it is best to read main series (10 books) first?
😮the bloody nine is nuts. But the stand alone book "Best Served Cold" With Shivers and the Snake of Talins before either of them were that is my favourite
Love a radioactive magic tornado Its always weird hearing Steven Pacey's voices at normal speed, usually im at 1.8x
I send this video to all my friends who are interested. Great job! I’m on my second reread.
What an amazing video.
Tv series " The Grimm" is based on this books right?
It's not really a medieval world, it's more like the 17th century.
MAhlazan, not MalAhzan
Crappy voice over
Good job with the review. Harry’s views are what you would expect considering who raised him. At least he was capable of growth and maturity. It took me at least three books before I realized that there was a larger plot underneath the series. Had to go back and listen to the first three again to start to see the patterns. We were encouraged to listen to music or something where I worked to protect our ears. Spent a sizable chunk on Audible trying to catch up and then keep up with Dresden’s adventures.😂
“The building was on fire, and it wasn’t my fault”
I would die for Kruppe
Great characters, great stories, plots within plots, the shear expansiveness of the world they build is huge. The idea of worlds within worlds within worlds. He put it perfectly about motivations and plots even in the 10th book when you think you have what they planned down there still is hidden plans that surprise you. I had a friend put it perfectly, it's just like life.. you don't start knowing everything. You slowly learn more and more and that's how it is with this series. The longer you read the more knowledge you get, it's not one of these book series where in the first book or two you get the complete stage of how the world operates and then you are just delving into stories after that. Every book you learn more and more about the lore that is not minor but huge. You meet characters that impacted whole civilizations.
The T.V. show did a decent job of recreating the books.
yes, it is, ultimately, hopeful.
I started to read the book for Logen Ninefingers. I stayed for Glokta and his Practicals.
I actually didn't know a thing before watching it
First Law showed me I don't really like grimdark
The big objection I have to the Malazan books I've read thus far is that you're attention is divided in a bunch of different directions rather than just one cohesive story line. I prefer the Black Company books.
I appreciate the part about it being grimdark I dont enjoy the genre very much because i like the good winning in the end, but i will give it a go some day. Btw i whould like a video about the Stormlight archive.
I am watching this whilst on book 6, loving it though not sure if it's actually good from a pompous semi-objective standpoint. Well worth listening too, best described as American Skullduggery Pleasant
Now that the video maker has told you not to; READ THE MALAZAN SERIES IN CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER! Only after you've finished the main series that is 😁
man we need more of these videos
This series has consumed my life
I'm just reading the damn books. I have yet to listen to an audiobook. Still love the books. Perhaps the voices in my head are better than one guy even though he might be James marsters.
