    How is the hygiene there? What did you do for food? Any concerns about the vehicle being left, and did you just leave it at the trailhead? (Hard to tell if there is a place to park)

    • @AlexontheMap
      @AlexontheMap Місяць тому

      Hi, there! It was very clean--especially for a backpacking site. You most likely will need to pack all of your food in, though there is a little restaurant about two miles away from the campsite if you would like to do that instead. And yes--there is a parking lot at the trailhead and you leave your car there while you are backpacking.

      i was thinking I would lighten the load a little, but not if it's a couple more miles, I want to do it in 2 days... hike in, rest a bit, see the falls, get up, and go the next morning. Another person was saying there is fry read at the falls too, so maybe I'll at least try it if you think it's safe. There was a whole bunch of people stuck there with norovirus earlier in the year. (Don't want to do the same excursion) Thanks soo much for sharing! Of the sights you've seen giving up a few days in order to experience, how does this rank? Would you go again?

    • @AlexontheMap
      @AlexontheMap 2 місяці тому

      I would say yes depending on what you plan on doing with them! They're not 100% waterproof (no hiking boots are), so if you are in deep snow then snow boots are probably better. Bringing along a pair of crampons is always a good idea too if you're dealing with heavy snow on the hiking trail.

    • @Ninety9924
      @Ninety9924 6 днів тому

      Alex already answered the issue with snow getting in. These boots have great traction overall, but I've never used them on icy terrain. Also to keep in mind that these are not insulated so your feet may be cold, compared to wearing boots with insulation. In a recent backpacking trip, I woke up to low 20°s, and my feet were cold despite wearing a pair of reasonably thick smart wool socks. My feet were so cold that I worried about frost bite so I kept jumping and walking and later stood in a sunny spot where my feel could feel that it was warmer. Once I started hiking, my feet warm up. These boots are not designed to keep your feet warm below freezing temperatures.

    Please keep in mind that not all in-park reservations will provide access to the restricted areas, for example if you have Apgar campground reservation you still need daily pass to enter Going-to-the-Sun Road from the west check point. Here's the official note: Lodging, camping (including front country developed campgrounds, which include Fish Creek and Apgar campgrounds and backcountry camping permits), transportation, or commercial activity reservations originating in Apgar will not provide access beyond the Apgar Check Point on Going-to-the-Sun Road. Lodging, camping (including front country developed campgrounds and backcountry camping permits), transportation, or commercial activity reservations originating east of Logan Pass cannot be used instead of a vehicle reservation for access past the Apgar Check Point heading east on Going-to-the-Sun Road. Visitors with service reservations along Going-to-the-Sun Road in locations east of Logan Pass (ex: Rising Sun and St. Mary campgrounds/boating) will need to enter Going-to-the-Sun Road via the St. Mary Entrance if they do not possess a vehicle reservation for Going-to-the-Sun Road (West). All visitors will be able to drive Going-to-the-Sun Road without a timed entry vehicle reservation going west from St. Mary.

    Were you there in ‘22 or ‘23 (I’d have to check my notes) when a bison killed another bison on the dirt road up to Slough Creek campground about 100yds from the road? Grizzlies and wolves for a week. Imo, Lamar Valley is worth being the only destination in Yellowstone. With binos, spotting scope, a folding chair, camping gear for Pebble Creek campground (providing easy access to the Valley)…guaranteed to have a good time. From the mt goat cliffs near the NE entrance through the valley to Tower-Roosevelt for bison and black bears and everywhere in between. Good advice to sit and wait! I always encourage visitors to ask camp hosts, store cashiers, rangers and other visitors about location of carcasses and wolf pack rendezvous sites. Also, a decent chance of beavers (likely) and badgers (with effort and luck). We’ve only ever done Spring and Summer. Agree with you about Fall. That’s our next trip. I hear Winter is good too but we have to get hyped enough to get through all the mountain passes between coastal PNW and Lamar. I've been to Zion in the spring and late fall several times, and have always avoided it in the summer for the reasons you mentioned. Problem is that if you want to hike the Narrows, too early in the spring is not ideal because water levels are usually too high, and late fall is not ideal either unless if you wear appropriate gear because the water can get cold. My favorite time is May but crowds can start getting bad at that time.

    From my understanding, the type of bear matters too. From what I've heard about different types of bears, I would definitely take an up close encounter with a black bear over a moose, but I'm not sure that I'd choose a grizzly over a moose. Obviously the best choice for any wildlife is that you each keep a respectful distance from each other though!

    We visited Glacier a few weeks ago and planned on hiking the Highline trail at Logan Pass. We did the right thing by going there early in the morning, but it was really foggy at the time with no views so we decided to come back later when the skies cleared up. We came back around noon, but at that time the parking was full. Hi, Kathy! Yes! That's my favorite time to visit, actually! Parking should let up a lot by then!

    Returned them under warranty after a walk in the woods - no heavy hiking! - less then 15km on them; lost two of the outer lace-straps. Nice and comfortable yes, but not as durable as my trusty old M90 Army Bata's. Assume a factory defect - ordered a new pair.

    Thanks for all the inside info. Also, do you need a reservation for Many Glacier in late September and early October?

    Hi Alex, really great informative video. I am planning to go to national park on 7th Sept 2024. I was planning to take the free shuttle inside the park. I have the question does fall shuttle service starts at 8 am in the morning? I couldn't find the start timing of the shuttle on the website. So, asking you if you have any idea. Also, will the fall reduced bus service, do you think I can cover Avlanche creek, lake Mcdonald and Logan Pass in a day ? I would really appreciate your advice. I am getting a red bus tour for 21st September. Any recommendation for 1 day if I take red bus instead of relying on free bus shuttle due to reduced shuttle service after Labor Day. Thanks you !

      I am actually not sure about what time the shuttle leaves in the morning in the fall. It might be worth it to call the park to ask. Avalanche Lake, Lake McDonald, and Logan Pass are all main stops, so you shouldn’t have a problem seeing them all that day.

    Amazing content, just subscribed to your channel ! Thanks for the detailed information, appreciate it ! Heading there in couple of days. Quick question, is it possible to turn back on the trail after a couple of miles ? We were considering doing hidden lake overlook point and a few miles on highline trail (maybe one or two just for the views) from logan pass. We were not sure if it is feasible to do so or whether it would be worth it ?

      So glad that the videos have been helpful! And yes--the Highline can be an out-and-back if you want. I often recommend doing exactly as you mentioned to clients to hike about a mile or two miles in and turn back.
