At home with Ralph: Tuning with David Pinnegar
Переглядів 3,3 тис.4 роки тому
In the next of our 'At home with Ralph' series, Ralph talks to the extraordinary David Pinnegar, owner of Hammerwood Hall, a country house in the South of England containing 30 pianos, all tuned differently. He has a method of tuning dating back to the middle of the 19th century which, he convinces us, is a superior system! #AtHomeWithRalph Directed, shot and edited by Alastair Davey Mastered b...
What does 'singing better' mean? In conversation with Ashley Stafford

Ralph got together with Ashley Stafford to talk about singing better and how to achieve it. Ashley Stafford is a professional musician, singer, teacher and osteopath, with 40 years experience of teaching ranging a...

I came across David in a Pianostreet discussion thread. His dedication was evident in his desire for others to 'hear' what he was saying, and in this video his Passion is evident. It's only yesterday that my mind and ears opened to the richness of unequal temperament, and grasping the degree of subtleties, the nuances, that the great composers were conveying.

Really enjoyed watching this, I remember Ralph recommended I get in touch with David about learning how to tune this way! Very interesting for someone with pitch (and used to equal temperament through an orchestral background) to hear those luscious home keys sounding so resonant! Interesting too that the F# harmonic example didn't follow the harmonic series we're used to in audio (root, octave, 3rd, 5th, octave, 3rd, 5th, 7th, octave, 9th etc)

My advice to James would be to study in Germany like me if you like this stuff like in Cologne Conservatoire or somewhere. I got free German RP there that really does help.

When I was conducting my youth orchestras many years ago, I had a reckoning with myself and decided that "good things in rehearsals also count as a success" and that it didn't all have to go right in the concert. True, the audience didn't get to hear those purple patches - but we did! (Chatting years later with one of the players, she remarked on one specific play-thru in one of those rehearsals - which I still remember to this day :-) so definitely important.)

I'm a Piano Technician and I've always thought that I was a nerd. Nope. This sets a new bar. That being said, this is a beautiful example of the Tuner's Art. I personally like this system well, but I doubt that we're every going to get any serious takers. Folks are just too used to 12ET.

One good tip I was given with modulation from my theory tutor in Wuppertal Professor Petra Obenaus was so simple, sharps go up flats go down, that's how Mozart wrote and resolved them in the same chord in his Italian sixths. It's such an easy modulation by step. The German word for secondary dominant I think is Zwischendominante with the sense of an in between chord that modulates up a semitone naturally, when you get the sharpened bass note in the chord 27b which is of course a German sixth modulating to 57 and I in Bach. It's the easiest modulation sharpen the bass by 2 semitones and drop the fifth. I went through musical history and pre C.20 tonality.

Wonderful singing, guys! Great rendering too. Great sound engineering. That's what I'm studying in my relative old age of 44. I'm in month 5. I started singing degrees when I was younger in London and Wuppertal but never finished off. I sang on the 1995 and 1996 choral courses. I made mistakes with my career but I did get somewhere with it. I got a review in the Wuppertal Times, got on a Holman recording, and got some limited pro work in Germany, and 2 concerts for Aldeburgh Voices under BP. I got Junges Theater Goettingen Summer opera 2002 and some gigs in Cologne where I sang Purcell. I now sing baritone had enough of counter.

Hello, isn't this a bit pro-Protestant? Surely Evensong pre-dates The Reformation as Compline and Evening Prayer; dating back to Saint Benedict. I like you personally, but this is simply twisted, Ralph!

You call this guy up in Texas after 25 years and he’s at his organ with the music turned exactly to the page of your favorite 9th chord.
