    Thanks. I managed to get it back together after a rather tense afternoon. The assembly of the upper stage of the second carrier was tricky. An o ring pick was helpful to raise the lower sun gear and allow the teeth of the planet gears to be rotated one at a time so that the upper sun gear could be put in place. The way the lower sun gear is positioned does affect how the upper gear was placed. You can test this by only installing the upper sun gear, and it fits in quite easily. In the end, rather than using the timing marks that made no obvious sense to me, I visually inspected whether the gears lined up. I looked up the timing mark postions and there's a forum on a top google search "timing marks rohloff" with a diagram to no avail. If someone does have the factory guidance we should really find a link for it. As well as suitable oil alternatives. Rohloff charging £4000/L is a bit much. Good luck!

    For those who are worried they cannot get that planet carrier timed again after removing it here's a tip: Get a hot glue gun and glue the gears on that carrier in their current position. It's like a cast that keeps the gears from rotating. Worked like a charm here. The glue won't stick and is easily removed afterwards. Make sure the glue has somewhere (apart from the gears) to hook into so it won't fall of prematurely. On top of the carrier are those holes you can use. On more recent hubs there is a ball bearing connected to the driver (at the 9:00 minute mark) That bearing is press fitted and also needs to be press fitted back into the hub shell. That requires you to use a hammer and gently hammer the internals back into place while also taking note of the position of those 9 nylon rollers that need to line up with the hub shell. And on top of that the rubber seal at the end of the hub has a tendency to get dislodged while pushing the end that sticks out through. You need to manually push that seal back into place with something like the end of a tie wrap. Don't put the internals back into the hub shell without triple checking every millimeter if that seal is not being dislodged.

    At 10:40 you remove ring gear 3. Do those two parts that make up that ring gear (the metallic shiny inner part and the black outer part) separate easily on your hub too? On my hub they do and I noticed, because they seem loosely connected, they caused a bit of a height difference resulting in the washer ring (at the 9:28 mark) that sits on top of this ring gear to deform a little bit. I also noticed other thin washer rings not being very flat too. I'm suspecting this to be the cause of some irregular ticking noises, but maybe this is all by design?

    Thank you for the video. I have two rohloff and one isn't disc so i was thinking just take off the "cup" of the disc and change between rohloff. Do you think that is easy to do?

    I have a Rohloff hub that has recently been getting lost between gears. It is most pronounced after peddling hard in first gear and then shifting into 3rd, the pedals just free spin with no connection to the wheel momentarily and when I stop peddling it hooks up. I have removed the gear pack from the hub body. The plastic drive pins have a .003" imprint.Ring gears have a slight wobble to them. Everything is covered in black oily oxide, otherwise everything appears to be normal. I have not disassembled the gear stack yet. Do you have any advice?

    Hey Craig...GREAT video!!! I would like to know at wich gear did you set the hub, so the pawls stay inside?

    • @climbercraig66
      @climbercraig66 2 роки тому

      Hi Stefan. I think any gear is OK if I remember correctly.... The pawls are retained by springs, and are either extended or retracted but should not fly out. All shift shaft pawls are retracted in gears 4 and 11.

    Awesome job Craig at explaining this Marvel. When I first saw this hub I put it in the same category as the rubik's cube, impossible to understand. But after a few hours of studying the parts and a couple of good videos like yours it all came together. Thanks for taking the time to make them and sharing them with the rest of us. Take care, God bless!

    To be honest, it looks simpler compared to a 7,8,11 speed Nexus or Alfine IGH. Especially the disassembly is trickier with these Japanese IGHs

    My Rohloff jumps slips when there is high force on the pedals. Happens in every gear. So I suspect it has something to do with freewheeling. How to repair ? Any Remarks ?

    Since over 20 years I drove my Speedhub about 51.000 miles and from the beginning, as an engineer, I'm searching how it works. Thank you very much for showing this valueable movie and the hint, that the small planet wheel is marked (because in this position there is the cover in line of the theeth). Now, as I think I totally have understood how it works, again I bow my head in respect for this technical design. I think they had a very skilled mathematic to find all these gear combinations makeable.

    Absolute scrap circuit! Two times oil loss next to bike big puddles! 3 slips through the gears at full speed, almost had an accident! Not switchable from one second to the other 13-14 gear ..... Disadvantages of the Rohloff circuit! 1. Much too difficult! 2. Oil loss ..... again and again! 3. Too high a price for such scrap 4. If you are lucky, the 13 and 14 gears go from time to time! 5. Sending in every damage takes 2-5 weeks! 6. Rohloff is more broken than she is going!

    I have a rohloff. But I noticed the bearings inside. Bearings go horrible over time. I thought the rohloff never needs to be opened for replacement parts or repair? There is no wear limit on international apparently it just gets better with age?

    Great video of a great product! I've already done 160.000 km with a Rohloff and it stil goes strong without a single flaw. Just the regular oil change and a new cable once and a while is all the trick it needs. Imho a Rohloff hub is the greatest tech leap ever found on a bicycle since Dunlop invented a sausage with no ends and pressed air in it.

      +jaks Stryp Hi: there are some small round punch marks on the faces of the six planet gears held captive in the planetary gear assembly. It's hard to see them in the carrier, or when there is any oil on it. If you pull out one of the planet gear axles (31 on the Rohloff Explosion gear hub drawing), you can see it on the face of the planet gear (23). They need to be aligned so they are all inside at the same places.

    one can not buy the cap separately. If one wish to change the hub to disc brake one have to send them to Rohloff service. In the next few days I will produce other cap for Rohloff, which one can buy and install by self.

    Awesome video and I think you so much for taking the time to do this. My only comment relates to the seals. I wish you could have touched on the seals just a bit. I have two older Speedhubs bought in 2003, and have always been plagued with leaking. The US Rep replaced the seals, but the leakage still continues unabated. More recently, one started leaking on the disc side and wets the rotor, and ruins the brake pads. I still love my hubs, tho - I just hit 52,000 on one and 29,000 on the other.
