MGA Restoration 2019 Aussie Pt. 95 - Replacing Dust Seals
Many owners have complained about the poor quality front suspension dust seals being sold these days. In many cases the originals have lasted up to 40 years. The new ones I installed a couple of years ago were absolute garbage. Do not purchase this rubbish. I was also able to correct a camber issue by moving the lower control arms to the opposite sides.

MGA Restoration 2019 Aussie Pt. 94 - Grille SS Mesh Insert
Переглядів 54811 місяців тому
Installation of a stainless steel mesh insert to the grille surround using original brackets mined from an old set of grille slats. Mesh used was 1.5mm gauge and 7mm opening cut on the cross. Finished product looks quite outstanding and should provide for better airflow which will be a big help to prevent overheating here in our warm/hot climate. I also installed an oil cooler. Enjoy

    How much does this cost to convert into RHD

    • @carlogic1960
      @carlogic1960 2 місяці тому

      I did the conversion myself and my major costs were getting the modified dashboard plastics rechromed and getting the modified draglink professionally welded and xrayed and certified. Also had to buy a RHD steering box ex Falcon. If you were to get it all done by someone else it would be many thousands and probably not worth it.

    That's a good job......would have like a bit more in depth, as Im doing a 69 Cougar...well aint started yet...its only been 4 years.....I noticed the floor and firewall on the rhs is more sloped than the lhs, did you change this or modify this on our car. Yeah I know, 1000s have been done....but I thought they would be the same. Did you use the Aussie firewall parts and the original hookup for the column? Im looking at rack and pinion, aftermarket rhd column hopefully they make it. Cougar should be basically the same floor/firewall as the Stang. Any other videos or tips? Thanks.

    • @carlogic1960
      @carlogic1960 7 місяців тому

      The slope on the floor on the LHS is recessed to acommodate the travel on the pedals. The full travel pedal must not touch the floor and I achieved this by modifying the pedal box, If I were to do it again I would swap the floor panel from left to right to achieve a better mirror conversion. I used the original steering column brackets but manufactured the firewall parts to suit. I would rethink your idea of using rack and pinion as the suspension/steering geometry may be hard to get right. Nothing wrong with the falcon steering boxes and if using the power steering box the sub frame needs to be checked in to get the geometry correct. Some converters try to alter the shape of the pitman arm but I would not recommend this. You can use the original column and rotate it 180 degrees to put the blinker arm on the right side. The video posted was all I had from an old tape so no more info in that respect. In all I converted 4 Mustangs, two for myself and two for friends and had no issues with the engineers.I also did a 1985 Transam. Good Luck with it.

      @@carlogic1960 Cheers, thanks for the reply. no doubt you have the talent. Do you know if these pro converters change over the floor area? What do you think of the RRS systems designed here. Good tip on turning the column around, makes sense. I was thinking of a later model oz pedal system and brake setup. Not worried about trying to be original, just a nice driver and fast. I like hotties.😁 Prefer RHD on our roads.

    • @carlogic1960
      @carlogic1960 7 місяців тому

      I have never seen the floor area converted not to say it hasn't been done. Likewise the RHS fender skirt allowing a better fit for the brake servo which I did on all of my conversions. (you can see where I cut that out in my vid) I know nothing of the RRS kits but can only assume that they are the goods but are they really necessary and worth the expense when the original works well. You can boost the strength of the shock towers with extra welding and fit a Shelby style brace. I found that those old Fords always went where you pointed them when set up correctly. I did fit disc brakes though. It all boils down to what you want to achieve and what budget you have.Beware of over capitalising.@@kramrollin69

    Nice work. How did you do with tool to ensure the rear part of the bonnet curve follow the curve of the body of the car? The rear part of my bonnet is flat and the rear part of the body of the engine bay is curve. I like to know you would fix the flat rear lip of the bonnet so it would follow the curve of the rear lip opening of the engine bay? Thanks

    • @carlogic1960
      @carlogic1960 7 місяців тому

      There is an earlier segment which shows some of the issues I faced in preparing the bonnet. I removed the underside frame (not recommended) that made getting a decent fit more difficult. All you can do is gently hammer it into shape. You could make a timber template off the shroud to give you the profile. Really it is just a matter of perseverance. I spent many hours on mine and it is still not 100% to the point that I will probably revisit it and repaint it. Good luck with it.

    Wow. Exactly the same job I've just concluded on my 59 MGA! Right down to the 1 x 1.4m 7mm mesh stainless steel. Except it's £56 in the UK. I opted to powder coat the grille surround silver, since it wasn't an original, but a poor quality repro. I noted only two fixings at the top when I disassembled mine. Looks like the middle bracket was a victim to the 1980's restoration. Looks like you did a great job and the plating's sweet. Love to see it fitted.

    • @carlogic1960

      Hi Rob. The mesh cost me $99 AUD so very similar in price. $1AUD gets .52p at the moment. The repair and replating was AUD$300 from memory so given that a repro grille is about AUD$1000 and of dubious quality I think the exercise was worth it.

    if you notice, those captive nut spikes are stamped out in such a way that if the bolt resists turning with sufficient tenacity (which they will given sufficient time), they can and will all collapse in the SAME direction and/or partially tear out the wood, thus freeing the captured nut to turn in concert with the bolt inside. if this happens, profound disappointment will ensue. i would definitely use nuts and washers.

    Endless details... Seeing the two pieces in profile on-screen makes me wonder if the original was two flat pieces welded together, whilst the Moss repro piece appears it's cut from a length of 90* angle stock, which would account for the angles not matching up. Does that seem right to you, with pieces in hand? Thank you for documenting all these intricacies!

      The Moss parts are a cast brass and nicely finished. Shame that they did not fit prior to adjustment. The one's taken out of the frame look like a mild steel from the rusty pitting. I do not know if they were original or a replacement at some time over the years. Anyway with a bit of manipulation we managed to get a reasonable result. Thank you for your comment. Cheers.

    Can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to argue that the body can be removed from the chassis on MGA. My father, brother and I did 1 frame off and one body swap due to collision. There’s a place in the workshop manual that says once the fasteners are out you bump the body forward to the chassis when in fact you move it back. Can’t remember how we found that out but remember very well 3 weeks of weekends and after work spent trying to start the threads in the hard brake line just forward of the right side cowl. Good luck with that.
