fun video thanks!!
Hey David hope you're well and hope you're still planning to do a recap video! Would love to hear what you & Paul have to say and what advice you might have for others now that some time has passed
Edit: WAIT! Nevermind! I rewatched and got it from the relive at the beginning of the video. Hi David! I'm wondering if you have the mileage/ft climbed stats for this day? Sorry to be a weirdo by asking. I have wanted to ride across the States for some time, and would like to do it with my husband. However, he can't take a couple of months off work, and by the time he's retired it's unlikely we'd be able to tackle a cross-country tour. After mourning a bit and giving a bit of thought, I figured I could recreate your tour on the indoor bike using Zwift. Won't be the same - there's a distinct lack of scenery in the bike room =D. However there's also a distinct lack of aggressive dogs so that's a positive. =D
Holy cow! Here it is! The last day! I can't believe it. How exciting! I have absolutely loved this series. It was so fun to watch. The videos were the perfect length, gave exactly the right info, and were hilarious. Your humour is so dry and delightful. I bust out laughing often. =D A few days ago when you said you were ready for it to be over, I totally understood that. It is epic to have ridden across the US - the memories last forever (Not that I've done it...but I have toured before) - but you miss your family. You must have been so excited to see them. 6:35 Oh! LOL, yes, there you go. =D Oh my goodness! How fabulous is that, that you have a buyer already for the stretch limo and you don't have to worry about the difficulty and expense of shipping it back to Arizona! And you get an embroidered shirt out of it. Win-win! Riding on the interstate on your last day! Terrifying! But you can definitely cross that off your bingo card. =D 23:22 That gasp. =D. I clapped for you! So exciting. CONGRATULATIONS!!! What an amazing achievement! And now you get to go home and you don't have to ride your bike tomorrow. =) Or rather, you didn't have to ride your bike, as this was two months ago. =D. And you got cowbell too! Nothing better than that. And you got an earlier flight! Fantastic! Welp. That quote at the end made me cry. <3 Happy sigh. Well. You did it. Have you had enough of cycle touring for the rest of your life? Or do you want to do more? If you feel the itch again, may I recommend to you The Natchez Trace Parkway? It's 444 miles (Well...442 tbh but they like to say it's 444) from Natchez Mississippi to Nashville Tennessee. It's hilly at both ends and flat in the middle, and is absolutely beautiful with many historical signposts along the way. And if you're lucky, you'll see a gator! (We did...nearly scared us to death until we realized it was dead.). It's not a main road (except around Jackson where they tied an interstate into the parkway. How did they get away with that??) and there's not a lot of traffic. The best times to ride it are May/June and Sept/Oct. I'd avoid riding it in July/August/Beginning of Sept as it's SO. DANG. HOT. There's no conveniences on the Trace, you have to go off it to resupply, but there are also no dogs. Zero. Zero dogs. And cars have to give you the right of way. Natcheztracetravel is a great resource. I'd love an update at some point! It was a pleasure watching your videos. I enjoyed your humour. I hope the school year is treating you well.
9:45 Did you partake in pickled feet? Man, what a ride! I can't believe tomorrow is the last day. What an achievement!
@@madiantin I lived overseas and ate many strange foods and insects, but never pickled feet!
8:07. OH MY GOSH! PUPPIES!!!
10:40. Life is tough, but so are you. Nice.
1:40. Oh my! Wow! That swinging bridge was nifty.
Re: Biden/Trump signs. Even here in a town near Nashville it's risky to put up a Biden sign. I have heard some pretty nasty horror stories of what happens to those who display them in the more rural areas. Doesn't reflect well on Trump supporters. =/
10:27. I'm so so sorry...I bust out laughing! I'm sorry to laugh at your pain.
Mad skillz on the piano. That was lovely.
Oh my goodness. All the people involved in getting Paul his gear back! Bless them! So kind. It makes one ponder on all the messed up people in the world who would steal...and all the really lovely people in the world who would go out of their way to rectify that theft. I am not surprised Paul's feet were hurting him, and I am SO glad he got his own shoes back. He looked really exhausted in this video; I imagine the worry had kept him up. I hope he got a good night's sleep the next night. Oh my, and he had bike trouble too. I have to tell you, I think Paul is riding this tour on Nightmare Level. Thank goodness for all the trail angels willing to help him. <3 11:54. Storytime!! Once upon a time I came out of our front door and THANK GOODNESS decided to go to the left to walk down the driveway rather than to the right to cut across the lawn to get the mail. When I turned around and looked at the house from a different angle there was a spiderweb that looked JUST LIKE THAT! It was only slightly smaller than I was! Nearly had a freaking heart attack as I would have walked right into it if I'd cut across the lawn. And I don't exactly live in Appalachia - I live in a suburb of Nashville. When you see those spiderwebs there are two thoughts: HOLY COW THAT'S HUGE! and also awe at how amazing it is. Dogs, man. Off the bike: so cute. On the bike: I hate them. I hate them so so so much.
Oh my gosh! Poor Paul! That's such a gut-wrenching feeling of violation to have your things stolen. I really feel for him. And riding in flip flops on clipless pedals would have hurt like the dickens. And all that climbing! So much pressure on the feet! That poor chap. =( A ton of climbing + vicious dogs = you're gonna have a bad time. =/ 18.8!!! HOLY MOLY!
The scenery is so similar to TN. <3
Wonderful stories and a great video!
1:05. I tell you what, the South in the early summer morning is spectacular.
Yaaassss. Father Ted! That would be an ecumenical matter. Re cicadas: We had fewer than normal in middle TN this year. We theorize that it was because of the two huge storms that blew in about a week after they all arrived. Blew them all away. =D
7:27. Well hello little bee. 8:45 So kind! Welp. You're in Kentucky so I'm imagining there will be dogs. So funny the ones in this video were in Illinois. =D
2:13. Woah. That' was amazing.
"I'm going to start giving updates now in fortnights. It just makes more sense to do it that way." Your humour in these videos is an absolute joy and makes me laugh every time. =D
1:14. WOW! That bike hostel is awesome!
14:26 i want to have a gradient on the radial gauge to mimmic the effeect on new MAN trucks with the digital speedometers, but ive got no idea how to do that, does anyone know how to do that or if it's even possible?
3:29. That sunrise though! 10:45. HAHAHA! I love Jack Handey
Oh my goodness! What an amazing picnic from Sarah and Grant. How awesome is that?
17:00. HA! =D
my numbers range from 1 to 6? not 1 and 2 edit: i was on expert😂 and it works perfectly!
"I bought some pepper spray". I sighed with relief. You might need that in Kentucky. I'm looking forward to those videos and hope you don't see any dogs at all.
I came into the comments ready to like the one that went, "Buhler? Buller?" but no-one had said it yet. So I did. =D
19 miles took just under four hours to complete? Ouch! That must have hurt.
I like the ride up to avra valley road and also tangerine and oracle.
God bless those methodists! So impressed with you losing weight! I thought I'd lose weight on my (short: only 10 days) tour. Nope. I gained 2lb. Sigh.
I only lost 3 pounds all summer! Very unlike other TransAm cyclists I read about.
1:40 Oh my gosh. WTH? =( I must admit, I love Kansas too! Many times I've driven from TN to UT, going through Kansas and Colorado. It gets ragged on because it's so flat - but it's also very pretty! And Colorado (well...some of it anyway =D) is flat too!
6:02. Oh my gosh that poor guy! I'm hoping the owner got charged for negligence? Eh. Kentucky. And it's "only" cyclist who was terribly injured? Probably not. =( Woof! 8+ miles into a headwind. That hurts.
Mr. Pimp Powers! =D =D
I'd say those SPF arm sleeves didn't quite do the job. =D What a great afternoon!
The new ones did better, but two months later, I still have distinct tan lines on my upper arms!
@@davidweber9065 I was looking for the stats on this video but couldn't find them. I don't suppose you have a record of how many miles you rode? I picked up that there was 3600ft of climbing, but I missed the miles. Also, I would love to see a follow up video, when you can handle thinking about the tour. =D I'd love info on stats. What was the highest day of climbing? What was the happiest day? (I think it was the day you flew home =D). What was the day with the lowest positivity rating? Is there a particular scene that sticks out in your mind? Etc etc. ALSO!!! I hope all goes well for your wife with her bar exam. Thanks again for these videos; they're so informative!
Re: your previous bag. I have one just like that, purchased off Amazon, and I was constantly fiddling with that thing to get it to stay in place. I noticed several videos ago you adjusting it as you were cycling and talking and was all, "Oh! It's not just me then!" Your new one seems to be much more stable! Nice.
Woo hoo! Congratulations on making it to Colorado! There is just nothing like meeting up with loved ones on a bike tour. It's SO exciting. God bless Scott at Kokopeli bike and board! What a miracle worker!
Yes, I'll never forget his help and kindness!
51MPH! Nice!
4:20. WOW! WOW! Look at that! That's a Turner painting! Holy cow! 112 miles into a headwind! Yikes! That hurt just to watch.
18:05. HAHAHAHA!! Oh my gosh. Nooooooo. You poor thing. "And it's still there." Noooooo! =D 20:00. Lol. =D How fab that lady found you a place to sleep. <3
24:22. Hahahahaha! =D 19:05. Wow. That view! Holy moly. 11:30 Assholes. Assholes everywhere. It was a truck, wasn't it? You have to wonder what their mindset is. "Oh look, here's someone enjoying themselves. Let's behave in a hurtful, scary way. Haha won't that be fun". Honestly, there's a special place in hell for people like that, imo. I try not to be judgy, but oh boy do I judge people like that reeeeally hard. May their day be as miserable as they are. HA!!! I KNEW IT! What is *wrong* with those people? It's like as part of the deal of driving a pick up you get your compassion and humanity removed and your butt gets transplanted into your brain. You are a better man than me, trying not to judge them.
Congratulations on making it to Utah!
Ok so....when the bathrooms are locked, where do you go?
I used the "facilitrees!"
@@davidweber9065 =D =D
Wait. Hold up. There *is* a navy base in Fallon?? I thought it was a joke as it's nowhere near the sea. Welp. You learn something new every day.
Wow, that dust whirlwind! What's it called? A dust devil? 6:52. Hahahaha Stationed with the navy in Fallon. =D.
Wait! How come Paul got a bloody nose? The elevation? Congratulations on finishing California!
He had a few out west, but they didn't last long. Maybe elevation or dry air.
How you managed to sort through, edit, and bang out these videos after a long day of riding I have no idea. I've only been on one bike tour - Natchez Trace - and let me tell you, I was *exhausted* and completely brain dead by the end of the day. Absolutely amazing you were coherent enough after all that climbing to edit and publish a video!
I laughed so many times through this video. Such great sense of humour. =D Congratulations on breaking the speed limit! Holy moly what a great first day!
Congratulations to your wife! 5:18. Your parents keep bibs in their car? Holy cow! Freaking genius!!! 7:18. HAHAHAHAHAA! =D 8:20. Hahahaha! Oh my gosh! Am I going to spend my time laughing through these videos? =D. They've been hilarious thus far.
