POVERTY IN PORTUGAL: Rising at an alarming rate
In this video, I delve into the latest data on poverty in Portugal as produced by Pordata and originally reported on by The Portugal News. To me, the findings of the report are quite disturbing and reveal a picture of a society in which many native people simply cannot make ends meet. Meanwhile, uncontrolled immigration seems to continue unabated all around us, which exacerbates the problem.

Many many problems here, it started with the Euro implementation as national currency as it inflated prety much everything, leaving the wages as they were (very low). Fast forward to the current days and now we have one of the most expensive rents in Europe, one of the lowest wages and mass imigration is FOR SURE causing havoc as the house market (but not only) is crazy and riddled with greedy people who just want the wealthy foreigners, forgetting about the Portuguese, many older folks were kicked out of their homes to make room for more profitable rentals not only on the capital Lisbon (historical neigboorhoods) like a bit all over the country! Let's not forget that we have one of the highest taxes in EU and one of the lowest incomes! Latelly we are seeing a concerted effort from the main supermarkets that are all aligned on overinflating prices to a ridiculous ammount, no one wants to see this, it's a total disgrace!!! In France for example, a few years ago the main supermarkets paid a huge fine because they were caught and prooved speculating (they wer all ligned up in sticking to the highest prices possible so no real competition...). Here is basically the same but the weak government wistles to the side and no one sees it... Everything is comming to a ridiculous point here I'm sorry to say....we are beeing chocked to death with these parasites and getting sick of rowing against the current.

Just a quick question. Are you saying the western governments don’t impose themselves on people, their banking and privacy like the Chinese do? If you think so then you are one of the brainwashed. I bet you the camera you are using to shoot this video was made in China it has Chinese components in it and so does the phone you use daily. Amazing how people think nowadays.

I am merely mentioning the fact that the Ngrave is not made in China because the crypto community has a poor relationship with China and made users want to avoid the use of Chinese made hardware wallets. There is no rule of law in China at all. Any Chinese company can be ordered to do what the CCP commands. The situation in the west is not as extreme.

    • @thecryptostrategist2433

I fail to see how. I do not welcome poverty or encourage it. If it exists, so be it, but it is not a desirable outcome. The core message in this video was that immigration is exacerbating poverty in Portugal - which I feel it is. If people are poor, they need to get themselves out of poverty and it is not the role of the state to cure the problem. However, neither is it the role of the state to create conditions (mass immigration) which deepen poverty. The job of the state is simply to engender the conditions necessary for people to thrive economically. This involves measures like low taxes, maintaining the rule of law, and protecting citizens from external threats. Beyond this, there can be tailored initiatives to deal with issues that arise, but there should not be a permanent state involvement in service delivery when it comes to healthcare and education. Nor should a culture of dependency via the benefits system be allowed.

@@thecryptostrategist2433 I think your political edifice isn't very coherent: - you don't care about poverty... but then you do - your see the gilded age of the USA, before the welfare state was invented as a reference point... but that was a time when the USA received mass waves of very poor immigrats from all around the world, many of whom ended up living in slum-like conditions during their first decade or so in their new country. So why is it that what was good for the USA isn't good for Portugal? - "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!" - you are in favour of Chega's 15% flat tax rate proposal, with the caveat that you think 15% may still be too high. But on a comment on another video you call for landlords to pay 100% tax in Portugal... - meh...

You clearly do not know the Portuguese political spectrum or agreements. Regarding making easier for naturalization for eu nationals, it's always dependent on other European countries making it easier for us, many countries require 8 to 10 years. Brasil has a special treatment not because the CPLP but because we have a bilateral agreement, portuguese people in brasil have the same rights as Brazilians in Portugal, we have an aging population and the agreement benefits us. A flat tax would benefit elites and foreigners with residence in portugal (EU), which usually enjoy much higher incomes from their home countries and have distorted housing market. reducing taxation and expenditure of our goverment to provide cheaper taxes for foreigners isnt't on portuguese public interest as our population is aging fastly and we need to invest on our social security and healthcare , if you dont like it , leave our country. Health care and education are constitutional rights in portugal and we have spent 50 years trying to improve these, we will not go on blind cuts to satisfy the wealthy brits that took over the south of our country and dont even learn our language. If you hate our country and politics so much , go back to your island, portugal is also fed up of brits.

    • @thecryptostrategist2433
      @thecryptostrategist2433 39 хвилин тому

The aging population excuse is not going to work. Japan has an aging population. So does Singapore. So do a lot of places. There are other solutions than importing millions of people from the 3rd world. The norm in the EU for citizenship is 5 years. As I pointed out in the video, Italy offers 4 years for EU nationals and 10 years for others. This is a good system. A flat tax is a beautiful solution that everyone can understand. Think of the accounting time it would save. I disagree with you that it would only benefit the wealthy and foreigners. Reducing the burden of the state benefits everyone. You call me a Brit and I am. However, I hold two EU nationalities in addition to my British passport. I think on that basis, i am more European than you are and I shall stay where I am thank you.

However, restaurants and cafes are still doing well and there is a plethora of supermarkets. There are charities to help poor people and many supermarkets have a collection basket at the exit.

I don't know if you know about when Portugal adopted the Euro coin? In 24h alone, the prices doubled on everything. So, for example, a coffee which was 50$ (not dollars, escudos, but it's the closest I could find), you had it on December 31st 2001 at 50$, then the next morning you payed 0,50€. Every single business did it and the government did nothing. The conversion rate was 1€=200$. So a coffee would have had to change to 0,25€. It didn't. The scamming opportunity was too good. The inflation was double the price overnight on all goods. Of course, income didn't change. So there and then, Portugal lost 50% of its purchase power overnight, and in 2024 nobody has yet brought this up as a solid reason for poverty. 22 years and counting.

I don't know how AIMA works since my personal process was from the time of SEF and happened before (and in anticipation of) brexit. It was a quite simple and straightforward process. I have no first-person knowledge about how AIMA works but apparently they are overwhelmed or understaffed to deal with the immense amount of extra-EU migrants that apply for a visa (many brazilians, venezuelans, north africans, sub-saharan africans, middle-easterns, hindu, pakistani, bangladesh, chinese and even nepalese). It seems that many hindustanis that once went to the UK prefer to now come to Portugal instead (to be within EU territory, I guess?). I don't think that Portugal is well equipped to receie these people in droves as they have been and I think that the issue will byte back in a short time.

The nationality process used to be easier when there were not so many applications. What you say about the Nepalese etc also applies to the number of nationality applications. The system is clogged up due to them in the main and yes you are correct, it is not going to end well.

From cafe-talk and even in some more professional settings, I've been gathering the feeling that Portugal will soon be joining Switzerland, Hungary, Finland, Sweden, Slovakia and Serbia in a full right-turn government in the next general legislative election. It will the first time ever since the days of Salazar and his fascist regime in the late 70's of last century. The Portuguese, as a people, don't seem to be well tailored for right-wing politics, but truth be said, we haven't seen it for quite some time to have an actual, factually-based opinion. The control of immigration and the raise of minimum wages could be done by other parties, not necessarily the extreme-right (even that Chega is not really "extreme-right" in the old-fashioned sense. In a country like Austria, it would be considered Christian right-wing conservatism and in England it would be just old-fashioned Tories).

    • @thecryptostrategist2433

I also get the same sense, however I am not optimistic that the next election will bring a transformation. The cult of socialism runs deep here and there are people who are just incorrigibly left wing here.

@@thecryptostrategist2433 I know a lot of those around here too, with a sort of quasi-religious or even sports-club fervor for the left - particularly PCP and PS - even though PS is a huge party that ranges from left-leaning social democracy towards pure centrism. They gained influence in the post 25 d'Abril and they have remained relevant until very recently. PS continues to be a very large and powerful party but PCP (communists) has waned in these last years. In the south, particularly in the Alentejo region, many people that were alive at the time (1974) were seduced for the PCP because of what they called the "agrarian revolution" which took the land from the original owners (many descendant from nobles and knighthood titles) and supposedly gave them to the people. This ended up not working as intended (naturally) but the people who were once owned nothing and were little more than feudal workers had the prospect of finally having something to call their own. These people became staunch PCP supporters in that quasi-religious fashion I spoke above. They will NEVER vote anything else other than PCP. But these people are now over 70 years old, sometimes over 80 or more, and are "dying out". The new generations - generally speaking - don't adhere to communist ideals anymore (the left-wing youth generally vote BE, which is more progressive extreme-left and proponents of the "new-left" AKA wokeism). All this to say that this so called "socialism cult" has its days counted.

Thing is even tho the government aint good and i actually agree portugal should try something on the right side, Chega is full of popular speeches and mostly hate viewpoints. I agree they are way less extremist than before covid but pointing out a problem with immigration or with people descendant from other countries that were born there so "they are portuguese" by law and by definition and the solution being "LETS GET RID OF THEM" isnt a real solution, thats literally just populist speeches just like the Nazi German party used in WW2. Im not calling them Nazis (even tho portuguese neo nazis identify with them politically) and obv they are not even close to them with "extremism" the kind of speech they use is still in the same category. They say what people want to hear but that doesnt mean they will actually do something and pointing out something is wrong without a feasible solution aint rly a problem solver.
