Yea, the characters were what really made the show. To the point that I could have sat through and enjoyed CLE if they didn't mess up the character portrayal. XANA feels so un-threatening in CLE as a major example.

5:39 So I went to the official UA-cam channel and it seems like they removed Code Lyoko evolution from the channel. But at least they have all 95 episodes + xana’s awakening still there. But even if that goes away, the series is available for purchase on Apple TV for $1.99 . Edit: so as it turns out evolutions is still there, they just never made an official playlist for it. So yeah- you can still watch the original and evolution.

I feel like an older jeremy using hair samples to bring them all back if xana reterns in the future would be interesting. Could be an interesting dynamic having the older versions of the cast and the younger ones showing how they have changed. If not a sequel could be an interesting episode in a sequal

I've always loved this battle. I faintly remember watching it the Saturday morning it aired. This was an amazing analysis. Aside from the curse word you used, which was understandable, I really enjoyed this video you made. I'm currently trying to make a Pokemon Battle Simulator game that emulates anime logic for turn-based combat. New ideas have been inspired from watching this video. Cool :)

Hey here’s some commentary about the English dub from someone outside the usa that’s very late for the party. I see what you mean when talking about the voice acting and it’s something I’ve noticed both in the English dub for both foreign tv shows and video games. For the longest time I couldn’t point out what it was about English dubs that I didn’t like. No matter if it was a dub from an old show or a more recent one, I just didn’t like it and just had a habit to check it out because I was curious about how you guys adapted stuff I like. But recently I came across some interview from Gerardo Reyero, mexican VA for Freezer from dragon ball z. In that interview he said that dub in the us tries to sound like a Saturday morning cartoon, that the industry there doesn’t adapt foreign properties with the seriousness they deserve because for the most part, 4kids, saban and other dubbing companies didn’t seem animation as a serious media. I live in Mexico and consumed a lot of dubbed animated shows, movies and anime during my childhood and whenever I look back at old stuff I liked as a kid, it amazed me how serious most of those shows and movies were treated by the dubbing industry here. You could even take freaking Scooby Doo seriously in those Zombie Island, Witch’s Ghost and so on because the VAs really tried to sound legit and serious while doing their job. Sure it wasn’t always a 100% adaptation of the source material, but they did tried their best to make it all sound good and as serious as the source material needed to. Going back and comparing it to the American English dub there’s a big difference because almost anything sounds like, well, a looney tunes cartoon, no matter the context of the show or movie. I mean no shade with American English dubs, I’ve heard amazing stuff from some projects, but Code Lyoko specifically falls into that category of shows that just had a bad dub because the dubbing company treated it more as a comedy kid friendly show, instead of the series world saving kinda show that it really was.

That’s just like your opinion man I really liked Evolution despite all the hate everyone flung at it for years I sat down and enjoyed it recently I think the later 2 seasons of CL are pretty meh compared to the earlier stuff and I felt Evolution harkened back to those earlier seasons William was great, Jim was somehow better, I even enjoyed Laura and wish they’d given her more time at the end The ending itself is a bit open but it’s nothing I needed answers to I liked it You’re entitled to hate it but I’m the one person who gets to stand up for it I guess

In the case for Laura, I do live with a programmer and had a professor who is prolific to put it lightly. But there’s a couple things I can do better than them, mostly just approach and design. So Not much, I’m very novice, but coding relies on the thought process of the developer, and no matter how good you are, you can’t change how your mind approaches things in an instant, so maybe she’s very smart at super technical thinking but bad at figuring out superficial design and function such as a vehicle.

this video is old but…tbh the acting for the live action was bad but on par for what i know of french live action shows geared towards children. Look, I'm sorry. If I ever make an adaptation or A proper continuation of Code Lyoko. I really want to avoid using xana as much as possible and create new antagonists. Because using Xana as a crutch or using him as a sense of giving him a redemption Arc is blatantly insulting and gross. The idea of giving Xana, a redemption Arc, When I read it, I just felt disgusted, And it felt forced. Can we remind everyone that basically Xana is a literal warmongering, genocidal AI program That was designed As a militarized digital virus. This is the same XANA that controlled nuclear weapons, mind control and took over people's minds, enslaved a kid as Being his personal general for about a year with a giant goddamn sword, and Not to mention in the book... He possessed a girl from California and used her to basically infiltrate The warriors and started to grow a personal Relationship with odd... That's some Wonder Woman 1984 levels of what the hell. So the idea of giving Xana a redemption Arc is just so gross and incomprehensible to me. It's just forced and manipulative and it doesn't really give me any type of sad or deeply passionate caring vibes. XANA was a villain from the beginning, and giving him a redemption Arc is Nothing but forced and manipulative.

It's weird to listen to the english dub, I have gotten too used to the finnish dub over the years of watching Code Lyoko several times.

Cool to finally see what happened to the original soundtrack and why it was removed. I think Innocent Moon playing in the background was what REALLY freaked me out when I watched it as a kid. Please please make it unlisted and link it or something so I can just watch it one more time😭😭

second comment ... I feel like a rule of thumb for a season one finale should be to end it as if it could end the series. You can never know after one season if your show is gonna be a hit and stay on the air -- you should always end your first season as if it could end the series, just to be on the safe side.

Sorry if this is a rant, but when I heard you ention many people considered Season 3 to be the worse, I felt like this was my best bet at sharing my thoughts. I did consider Season 4 my least favorite season, but I don't think it was for the reasons that others may have hated it. for me, it added unnecessary elements to the show that I personally didn't feel it needed. - I have no recollection of why the Lyoko gang needed to go to the places where their lyoko forms were 2D (I forget what they were called, I just remember only seeing the one with the Xana spiders and it traumatized me as a kid). - I felt like the outfit changes were VERY unnecessary. I get character growth and such, but these... were not it. Most of them looked worse on the characters in my opinion, and I don't think they helped enhance ANYONE but Aelita (and only because Jeremy gave her wings). The original designs were peak, and suited the characters on a personal level I believe and showed their values and interests ... or well, at least half of them did. I am not sure how Odd's shows his interests aside from Kiwi, but I believe his case is a reverse case as he embraces Lyoko on Earth as we see in the prologue episode. -- Ulrich's initial design shows his interest with martial arts to a degree. Yes he uses a sword, but those can be used in martial arts. It may open some insight to his interests outside of martial arts, but I don't really remember much development of him. -- Yumi's initial design shows her culture which I believe has always been a big part of her character when it comes to the home situations. The "lifeless acting" clip shows this too because she literally brings a samurai armor to her school for a presentation (could've been the topic of history of her culture though but I still think that culture is important to her). -- Aelita's design is simple. It shows that she is a peace bringer and does not wish to fight. Be this because Franz saw that for his daughter or if the form is brought upon them for their first arrival like it was for the other 3 I am not completely sure. Point is, these designs suggest who the characters are as people and I do not believe their NEW designs show who they are anyone, they're just "flashy and cool". - This is also just a personal nit pick, but I always felt Lyoko's design got........ severely nerfed as the show went on. Season 1 looks beautiful even if the animations are not the best. It was realistic, detailed, and looked really pretty. But then by season 4 it's just... eh. These may be pointless reasons to dislike the show, but these changes made it a bit unenjoyable for me to watch, making me not even finish the series.

I'm probably gonna get flack for this, but after re:watching all the episodes (including Evolution X_X) I keep making comparisions to Persona since it's about kids attending school and balancing their social lives, studies and saving the world. I know it's way deeper than that and obviously not even in the same ballpark but that's just how my brain works in comparing them Take what ya will. X'D

Evolution is not canon. I don't care what anyone says. I don't hate Evolution, and I'll admit that there are SOME things about it that I genuinely love. I like how William is a badass hero and I adore William's budding friendship with Odd. But it's just that Evolution clashes too much with the original to be considered canon. It's an "alternate universe sequel", like Dragon Ball GT. Also the creators of the original didn't like Evolution either, sooo...

32:19 Yeah. French is a very monotone language (literally) and French culture just isn't very emotionally expressive either. But yes, as a French speaker, their acting is bland.

Excellent video. You highlighted a lot of details that I didn't know about this movie and made me want to rewatch it. Your story was touching and I see why Rengoku's final stand was so impactful. Earlier this year I contracted Covid and had a complication that affected my breathing so badly that I couldn't sleep for nearly 3 days. My mental state was worse than it ever had been before. My situation wasn't nearly as bad as yours, but that was the closest I've ever come to dying and it made me reevaluate my life and try to live it courageously like Rengoku would.

10/10 Would recommended. We need more long form in depth anime content!
