    There are tunnels in Mountain Home, Idaho as well. I was in and explored them in the mid 80's and early 90's. One entrance I knew of was in what was then called "Captain's Galley" a seafood place. The "Mi Casa" Mexican resturant is there now. The tunnel was beneath the kitchen and a staircase led down to it from there. It was used as a cold storage, which wasn't really that cold. You had to take a broom and flashlight because it was dark and thick cobwebs covered the tunnels so heavily you could lay the broom against them. The tunnels led from there North and South approximately below the sidewalk closest to the buildings along North main street. (Old hwy 30 Northbound) Much of North and south main along the "loop" as we called it used to have several pointes where purple thick glass bricks were inset into the pavement. This cast light down into the tunnels in some places. The Mellen building once had what looked like steel doors that werre welded shut and were flush with the sidewalk we believed they were once used to acess the tunnels as well. There are access ramps built there now on the east Jackson side. Going North there was a tunnel leading East just before East 2nd North street just past where the old "Hub" used to be and the street without having to climb or move some rocks. South led a a little ways until it turned West toward the tracks. I could be here all night so I'm going to be brief on these. (known and verified) There was an access point in the back of the Old "Manhattan resturant". Tommy Wong used to run the place and showed me and a friend when we were asking about the tunnels, we went as far as the light from the staircase would allow before turning back The tunnel from that small room ran West about 50-60 feet and turned North and South. Tommy said the North tunnel went all the way to Safeway and had 2 other access points along that route, and a couple of blocked exits at staircases. (known and verified) There was a stone stairwell behind a wooden panel in the storage room of the River City restaurant as well. The door to that room was locked from the outside. The owner of the place said other people could get in the store from the tunnels. I used to work in the arcade side of the place and bussed tables for a small share of tips. I lightly explored the tunnel when I had time and could sneak it in. It went West and led to a North and South tunnel (much like Tommy's tunnel) The South tunnel had two very narrow tunnels leading West, one was an ever narrowing dead end and it creeped me out, so I never took the second one but the tunnel had what looked like "filled in" rooms two on the right and one of the left that appeared to have once been jail cells, (guessing) as the dirt that filled them was packed against the bars, but showed no sign of a gate or door. (wierd) Never Went north all the way but it went for a while revealing a couple points where other stores were as well, most were blocked off with dirt or rubble, a couple were actually bricked off. Never went the distance. (unconfirmed) ~ A friend in high school in the late 80's told me when she worked at King's Department store that there was a storage area most shoppers didn't know about downstairs that encircled the basement and that you could watch people from behind pegboard...Somewhere in that area was a tunnel access. She said that tunnel led North, South as west approximately below the sidewalk of North main.(Old Hwy 30 Northbound) ~ The Wagonwheel (once a biker bar) had a tunnel access. (unconfirmed/rumored) ~ Some have said the tunnels lead as far out of town as the interstate+. ~ There was a wild sory in the 90's about a tunnel access from a building at the cemetary. ~ I've never heard anyone say there are any of these tunnels west of the tracks ~ I was told that when they tore the fountain out behind Jim Jones insurance agency there was a partial tunnel accessable from there, that the fountain was built over an entrance. ~ The Chinese built the tunnels or The Japanese were imprisoned in them during ww2. I find it odd that these tunnels and many others I haven't been in but trusted aquantances I knew have been, isn't or wasn't better documented at least for the sake of history, or safety. I haven't been there since the late 90's except in google earth. Heck maybe there's a monument or something I don't know about. There are definately tunnles..or used to be.

    Mystery solved, although the film with the sound is not the same as this and is badly edited. The reporter is SAM DONALDSON (not that one, a guy that worked at KBOI-TV) and the report is from 1967. www.idahostatesman.com/news/article211362844.html

    Looked like a '60 Olds went by and there is an early D series Dodge truck behind that reporter, maybe 1963-4 and a GM station wagon c. 1964 as well passes behind the reporter. Look at 5:51 and what is likely a Nash (Airflyte?) goes past that background Dodge D as well.

    I will tell you something I feel...I'm almost certain I wasn't even an embryo at the time this was filmed (I was conceived in the late summer of 1965).

    That TV set looks like it's VHF only as well, pre-1963. There is a radio? console related to it just above it and the cabinetry seems to match it in design. Perhaps if the model or maker and maybe the year of their manufacture as well as the latest model year of the cars and truck seen that would pin a date down much better. So far I haven't seen a 60s truck I could verify.

    • @dertbom
      @dertbom 6 років тому

      I'm thinking because it's Idaho, no disrespect intended to the people, I just don't think having the latest things was a priority for them. Vehicles were built to last back then, but yeah it seems pretty early to me. I'm by far no expert, but I get the feeling it's late 50, early 60.

    • @steadfastcoward
      @steadfastcoward 6 років тому

      Ford actually built Model T's in Boise, which grew into the lineage of Ford dealers in the Treasure Valley. People bought new cars at a good clip in the late 50s and early 60s, trucks wouldn't tend to be part of that sort of ritual. As for the TV set, it was probably not that old, maybe maybe a matching radio/phono? hi-fi stack on a companion TV model, Truetone maybe?

  • @steadfastcoward
    @steadfastcoward 6 років тому

    Here's an idea...could this be somebody with KUID or KBGL (KISU), which were two of the original three PBS affiliates that are now IdahoPTV? The problem is that there is no channel number on the microphone or even a patch to ID that. KAID wasn't on the air until 1971. Another thought is that somebody at KING Broadcasting (KTVB) or the owners of KBOI TV did the report for relay to the other group stations or a network.Because some co-owned stations probably didn't share the same network affiliations it would make sense as to why no ID was placed on the mic.

  • @dertbom

    I would check with any schools that offered film classes back then, because it doesn't look professionally produced. I bet you it was a student project, and the student was probably from the area and knew about the tunnels.

    • @steadfastcoward
      @steadfastcoward 6 років тому

      That would bolster a theory about it being for ISU or U of I because BJC (BSU) didn't even have a radio presence, or even an on-campus audio network at that time.

    • @dertbom
      @dertbom 6 років тому

      Looks like UI just started offering it last year. He's probably related to some of the early pioneers of it in Idaho. I can't imagine the broadcast/film scene was all that big back then.

      And the microphone is a Shure? model? (almost like the famous one used by blues harmonica players) with a white windsock at times. Notice that the cable is run all the way down to the ground from the balcony of Hip Sing Association. That is a good 60 feet at least!

  • @steadfastcoward

    If it is established that Ray Fong was interviewed then maybe his family members recall this.

    • @dertbom
      @dertbom 6 років тому

      Are the Fong's related to the Hop Sing that was up the street from the Hip? I wonder if the map lines up with the two buildings, and/or he was just talking about the drainage from the water waste.

  • @steadfastcoward

    Wondering if this could be a reporter for KCIX-TV Channel 6, which occupied that channel for a short while in the 60s I think it was and was the first one predating KIVI by almost 15 years? KCIX used some of the old KFXD-TV equipment, including one of the towers at the old broadcasting house as I recall hearing. Did KCIX-TV have a newscast? KBOI and KIDO/KTVB would have probably had IDs on their mics and they were the only other signals c.1959-6? If not it might have been an independent effort that was trying to sell a story to channel 2 or 7.
