Apparent Winds Shorts: Exploring the ACE Basin
Have you passed by the same street, path, building… whatever may be, and wonder whats down there? What is it? You could wonder all the time; forever! Why don’t we just look and see?!
I could’ve gone my entire life, passing over the same bridge. Looking left and looking right down the same river. I could’ve always wondered what’s around that band? Where does this lead?
 what if I always wondered and never looked? I didnt want that. The result was INCREDIBLE!

Apparent Winds How To's: Reefing & Re-Caulking Teak Decks

Here's another "How To" from our experiences refitting our beautiful vessel, "Resilience". So, let's get into it! Long story short, we had leaking decks. With enough of a boat building background, we decided to consult with professionals and do the project ourselves. In our case, our teak decks were designed by Teak Decking Systems (look em up!) and so we were able to confirm that we did in fac...

    Just found your channel today. Kiera and Tripp, Your adagium is to find out what this earth is all about. Cultural and environmental. Exactly my goal on all of my travels. On the westcoast you spoke to loads of people being sort of native Americans. American Indians. AI. Funny abbreviation. AI in modern days knows less than they knew and know. They knew to live off the land and take only what you need. And Sitka. Sitka spruce wood was and still is used for billions of acoustic guitar-toppanels. I owned a few of those guitars. I sold all of them and now all my acoustics have cedar tops. They simply sound better to my ears. On killerwhales. During the last couple of years they have been attacking rudders of sailing vessels in Portugal, Spain and the Gibraltar Strait. Kiera, what is your idea? Maybe we will never know. I agree, the oceans are the cradle of life. But than again, also life on the dry, flora and fauna. We as mankind we never understand. Mankind needs technology, tools, external energy and politics to survive, more or less. Plants and animals do not, they sense. The overwhelming question remains. Is mankind entitled to rule the earth? Maybe a few good men (or women). Plastic in the oceans. Another manmade issue. Just like pollution, wars, weapons and migration. Name of your vessel is "Resilience". Beautifull. Where was she built? Designer? Specs?

    • @apparentwinds
      @apparentwinds 2 місяці тому

      Thanks so much for this insight. It's interesting when we travel, we find a new connection and understanding of things that have been our lives far longer than our visit to a specific place. For instance, Sitka Spruce! Tripp was a wooden boat building (apprentice) and ran a youth boat building non-profit before this. Sitka Spruce is popular still in a lot of wooden boat construction. To see the impact, however, of that lumber industry in one area and it's application thousands of miles away on a different ocean is eye opening. The same goes from Salmon and other products. It's not all negative, just a valuable perspective to learn. We hope to sail to Gibraltar and collaborate with cetacean biologists to study the behavior you brought up. We've definitely heard a lot of ideas as to why these Killer whales do what they do. I think for now our opinion is curiosity mixed with some fun and learned behavior in the area. For more about Resilience, check out our website! We will also be posting a lot more about the vessel, her story and how we've prepared (are preparing) her for this new job. Quickly, she's a 1978 Palmer Johnson Build, John G. Alden design built in Sturgeon Bay ,Wisconsin.

    Fishermen will not change unless you make them change . In the past and now . Isn’t the commercial cod gone up there.. It’s just at the beginning of cod rebounding from the 50s thru the 70s. Culture dies if fishermen aren’t made to work with new standards.. I’m absolutely positive if Lobster fishermen were not monitored they would deplete the population of bait herring . More than what’s already been done by them and other elements contributing to species extinction

    This is a bigger issue than can be addressed in a 12 minute video... from the perspective of protecting the whales off Maine from entanglement in lobster harvesting operations, what percentage of whale mortality is attributable to entanglement? And have the measures implemented by the lobster harvesting industry been shown to result in a statistically significant positive reduction in whale mortality? From the perspective of preserving the iconic Maine lobster harvesting industry, is it truly sustainable? What *is* going on with the lobster population? And what is driving the economics of increasing retail prices for lobsters yet lobster men are being paid less? Is it similar to what drove the near-disappearance of the family farm in the American Midwest? Who is really profiting from this? So many questions, so little time!

    FYI (as a native Californian and familiar with the geology and geography of the American west...), not *all* rivers lead to the sea. Remember the Great Basin of North America (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Basin). But we loved this episode and understand the context of the title, that indeed there is an intimate and unmistakable bond between waters on the land with the sea. It's so amazing that you are able to make so many connections with people who defend these natural treasures. Keep it up!

I know how hard it is to live on a boat, having been a year round live aboard skipper for 4.5 years on a 250 ton Expedition Vessel. Keira is courageous, and good hearted. I think it is harder for women to liveaboard. You both deserve each other. The only glitch I find is the name of the boat, that should be Apparent Twins. Best episode so far! Would love to hear your take on the whales learning/teaching how to capsize boats. It's interesting to think about the intelligence that goes into that type of behavior and how similar it is to human behavior.

    • @apparentwinds
      @apparentwinds 11 місяців тому

      Thanks so much!!! Hopefully we'll keep on improving. Thats the goal anyways! So we are very interested in this behavior form Killer Whales as well. We discussed it with the cetacean biologist we had aboard at the time and he had some theories. We really can't speak to this in any scientific way without a cetacean biologist here but we can say that we discussed the possibility of these individuals being equivalent to curious and worked up teenagers who have found a new toy to play with. There are several other theories out there as well. Yes! Super similar to human behavior. These whales are EXTREMELY intelligent. There are plenty of stories out there of them displaying very curious "human like" social behavior. We hope to continue to work with biologist in this field and continue to learn more about them. At some point we will make it to the straights of Gibraltar; perhaps we'll have a chance to conduct research there!
