Leixlip, County Kildare, Ireland
Leixlip is a town in north-east County Kildare, Ireland. Its location on the confluence of the River Liffey and the Rye Water has marked it as a frontier town historically: on the border between the ancient kingdoms of Leinster and Brega, as an outpost of The Pale, and on Kildare's border with County Dublin.
A more detailed account of Leixlip’s history and heritage is contained in the Leixlip Heritage Trail, the first panel of which is 40m to your right on the banks of the Liffey. (You can view the trail HERE.)
Evidence of Viking settlement has been found around Leixlip and the name they gave the town was lax hlaup, or ‘salmon leap’. This is a direct old Norse translation of the Irish, Léiman Bhradáin, meaning ‘Leap of the Salmon’ and is the basis for our name today. It is known that Viking invaders settled here in the tenth century. Their stronghold was at Dublin and their small ‘empire’ extended as far west as Leixlip - possibly since the shallow draft of their longships allowed them to navigate this far upstream.
The powerful Anglo-Normans arrived in Ireland in 1169 under the leadership of Richard de Clare(Strongbow). In
1172, one of his followers, Adam de Hereford, built Leixlip Castle in a prominent position overlooking the village.
This important historical building has been added to over the years and is one of the oldest buildings in the
country in continuous residence. It was attacked by Edward the Bruce in 1317, and much damage was done to
the local church (St. Mary’s) at that time.

Good Video of Mullingar.
I’m originally from Dunshaughlin, I grew up in the disused house opposite the National School and St Patrick’s Hall where I still have extended family in Dunshaughlin and I’ve been living in Manchester U.K. for 23 years - at age 53 now, I know ever fewer of the locals in the village, every time I come home to Ireland, including for my Mum’s funeral in 2009 and my Dad’s funeral in 2018 - due to Covid, I was not able to come home between my last visit in early December 2019, then after Covid in August 2022 and also my last visit in October 2022 (both during post-Covid U.K. train strikes)

Beautiful place 40 years ago...too many foreigners there now
Beautiful please do for Dunleer and Ballina
I have family from here, their name is Geraghty.
Ahhh I was waiting for you to walk down the pathway next to St Mary’s church from one side of the church to the opposite entrance, or hopefully walk inside St Mary’s.
High street was originally 2 way traffic and of course no double yellow no parking lines. But still beautiful Navan……. Even if it’s changed from how I remember it from the 1960s
Nice. But I would have liked to see the stores (shops) and there to be a chat with a native or two.
Thank you very good. Happy memories. Need to see part 2 ?
Thanks for beautiful clip
I believe some of my ancestors left this town to emigrate to New Zealand, and then most left to go to everywhere, but my grandmother stayed. I really enjoyed this chance to see the town. Thanks.
I visited dundalk in 1955 my mother took me on a bus trip after i had been in hospital for three months one of my memories i was 12 year old
Please do for Ballina,County Mayo
Great video. I suggest a similar video from Celbridge.
Stunning streets of seatown but you left out the beautiful monastery in chapel Street, the castle in castle road ,and st Leonard's gardens
Many years ago I worked as an apprentice electrician on the construction of that tiny Garda Station, I have never forgotten the wonderful B+B where we I stayed.
Considered the worst town in that county with crime, drugs, poor infrastructure and few real businesses to bolster it etc. But the early morning video before the people get up looks tranquil.
Wonderful video. 😊
My dad and his family were raised here until my nan passed a few years ago. I have very fond memories of Oldcastle growing up and it will always remain in my heart
My mother was from here, maiden name Bardon. They had a farm. I often wonder if it still exists, and the actual farmhouse where she grew up! I don’t know exactly where it was and only visited my grandmother once, in the seventies so don’t know much of Oldcastle (mum moved to England) but if anyone has any information I’d be so grateful!
I can see my house from here 😮
