In 1961, the Golden State Freeway was still US 99. In 1965, I-5 replaced US 99 and the sign was modified. In 2023, the overlay fell off revealing a nice US 99 SOUTH sign. The other portion of the overlay hides a State 134 EAST sign as, in 1961, State 134 continued along the Golden State Freeway to Colorado Street.

Deep inside on of the sea caves at La Jolla cove, you can find stalactites, flowstone, and terraces. These are delicate features slowly forming in the part of the cave that is well above high tide. The cave itself was formed between two faults in a shear zone.

A small section of Hwy 1 by LAX is a quasi-freeway. It has interchanges and grade-separations but is not classified as a full freeway. This section runs from I-105 to Manchester Ave with a couple of at-grade and signalized intersections in between. A drive down Gilman Dr in San Diego, California. This is a portion of old US 101, bypassed in the mid-1960's. Original curbing and some pavement remain visible. This section of roadway will be modified greatly in the near future eliminating the old curbing.

Taken on a motorcycle ride from the Tumble Inn (north gate) to State 138 in November 2015. Speed was around 15-20 mph maximum. Roadway conditions vary greatly. The asphalt, south of Sandberg, is from the late 1920's with some "recent" overlays. The concrete, when exposed, is from 1917-1919. The road also needs your help.
