Freddie Steward - In Form | Leicester Tigers Rugby Tribute (24/25)
No matter where you stand on England's future at full-back, Freddie Steward has played out of his skin in what, I believe, has been his best ever season for Leicester Tigers.
Once stereotyped as "Air Steward" for his insane reliability as a kick-diffuser, Steward has modified his style to accommodate the modern game; developing his footwork, increasing his pace and sharpening his scoring and assisting skills.
With his now brutish attitude in defense, I wouldn't be surprised if his form is rewarded with a start against Ireland in the Six Nations.
Don't believe me? Here's his tribute!

Max Llewellyn - Weapon | Gloucester Rugby Tribute

Rugby is a strange sport. You can be the Premiership's leading try-scorer and respected by both players and fans alike, but an international coach's bias stands between you and representing your country. With that said, Max Llewellyn is the current snub in Warren Gatland's Six Nations squad. Arguably the in-form player as things currently stand, Llewellyn is a hard-running, ball-carrying centre...

It takes a brave man to stop Alfie Barbeary dead in his tracks. His carrying power is immense, especially from close-range - an area of the field in which he often finds himself scoring. Nice to see a tribute to Freddie Steward. I really like him as a player. Never gives less than 100% and constantly gets grief from the fans. I can only imagine they don't like a player who smashes the opposition, takes everything that's put in the air and yes I'm going to say it, has decent pace and a good step for a big guy. Leaves it all out there in every match. I wish him luck on Saturday, it would be nice to see him on the winning side and get some recognition from the fans.

    Thanks mate - good one again. He's in great form - winning collisions and running at space. His footwork has improved too. He'll always be slow to turn - that's because he's big - it's just physics - the same as his ability to win collisions and to dominate in the air. But used right that can be covered to gain the benefits that come with his size and power. Running from deep, hitting soft shoulders and getting passes out of contact he provides an attacking threat unlike others. I'd like to see his kicking game come on so he can be used as a component in the tactical kicking game but apart from that only those who don't understand the modern game doubt his quality.

      @@Old_One_Eye Thanks, OOE. Great to see you on UA-cam and Reddit. You've just provided, in my opinion, the best analysis of Steward's current game. You have to be blind to not see how much he's improved. Steward is in good form but I do think Hendy and more so Carpenter are better fits for the international scene with better all-round skills and proper back three pace to back it up with. Saw the flaws of having steward at the back particularly against South Africa where he was dodgy on his feet and missed two crucial tackles that a faster man likely would have made. Just my opinion but hey, Daly as the number 2 full back for England so who even knows.

      @ What we are lacking for England is a punch option in midfield. We need it as a threat not just for gain line but to fix defenders and tie up the opposition back row. If we’re going to develop our phase play then we need to build phases from the set piece. I hate to mention it but we’re sorely missing Manu Tuilagi. Ollie Laurence can do it a bit but he’s the best 13 in England and it’s a sacrifice to play him at 12.

      @ All the top teams have a punch option to get them on the front foot. France had Danty, Ireland have Aki, SA have Damian de Allende (and Kriel). It’s also a defensive issue. We need a destructive bad boy. I think Cokanasiga could be re-trained in the mould of Sonny Bill

    Nice mate. Great to see a new tribute to him. For England I'm not sure. I'd probably rather see him over Dombrandt who I rate but who has been given a few chances and not really been able to consistently justify his place. My number one pick at 8 for England would be Mercer. I'd like to see if his footwork and offloading could help develop England's attack. That means dropping Earl or playing him at 7, which I would love to see tried, with Ted Hill at 6. That is a rapid back row which has a decent balance of skills, though it's a bit lightweight. It would be a brave move to drop Underhill or Curry and CCS though. In a perfect world I'd get Jack Willis in at 7, and drop Earl to the bench.

    • @StanWilks
      @StanWilks Місяць тому

      Thanks, Glen! Interesting thoughts all around. He definitely deserves a shot in lieu of Dombrandt, who has never looked entirely comfortable to me on the international stage. Mercer is doubtless talented, but I think he signed his own death warrant by throwing his toys out the pram at not being selected. Steve probably doesn't want players who, presumably, might jeopardise the team. But that's just the hypotheticals on my part. We have so many options in the back row that, whoever Steve chooses, it will be a successful trio almost all of the time!
