How Matt Reeves Reinvented Batman On Screen
With The Penguin coming out and being as good as it is I figured now is a great time to dive back into where this whole thing started with 2022s The Batman. A movie and universe so good and so promising, Warner Bros is bound to mess it up at some point in the future. So before that happens, why not gush about how impossibly good of a job Matt Reeves did and how he finally decided to make a Batman movie that features Batman as the main character. It’s some truly revolutionary stuff here folks.

Happy holidays everyone! I have returned with a deep dive on a long forgotten reality show classic, King of The Nerds. A show so bizarre that I had to talk about it for 43 minutes. The Future of Star Wars And Dave Filoni

The Ahsoka show came out and as per usual Star Wars just can't help stepping on rakes except this time the only person to point the finger at is the beloved Dave Filoni. Oh no! Him and whatever lies under his hat (perhaps it's some kind of ratatouille situation) have not been steering the ship very well lately. While Ahsoka or more accurately the show where everyone stands in a room with their ...

We Didn't Deserve Guardians Of The Galaxy
The "elbow move in the Nolan movies" always bothers me and I think it happened because they gave Batman razor sharp deadly weapons on his wrists. You see those things cutting apart Ra's al Ghul's sword in the first movie. my other favorite move is just grabbing someone and punching them. A lot of the fighting in Begins in particular (when it wasn't obscured by the camera work and editing) reminding me of the Ninja Turtles. A solid torso with no movement in the waste at all.
Between The Batman and The Penguin, Gotham feels like a terrible place to live that feels like it could be a real place but that many can’t escape (see Vic’s arc as such a great portrait of that entrapment).
I’m glad I watched The Penguin too. Seeing the Penguin in The Batman whilst I did love the design and acting he still felt like they took a major character and made him a typical #1 henchman with a quirk the hero faces before the final villain. Once you see him on his own and his evolution into a full blown Rogue similar to The Riddler, you realise how much Matt and his team respects all parts of the Batman lore and really knows what they’re doing.
39:14 Bro is just explaining Chicago
"John Wick is criminally underrated..." "they dont get nearly the praise they deserve" you've lost me lol
I would love to freeze get done right
Matt reves is a breath of fresh air in the era of copy paste marvel movies
I do agree that the John Wick series reached a really natural conclusion... but I would dearly love to see something of someone entering at the ground floor of this universe.
Pattinson was giving me Keaton vibes. He surprised me. My biggest complaint is the third act. The pacing got a tad confusing as well as Riddler's motivations. Does he hate the Waynes, or Gotham, or both??? And if he does hate both, why?
Every time I hear someone call the Schumacher Batman movies "bad," I truly lose faith in straight people. Y'all really just don't get camp, do you? They're hilarious, tonally comic book-y, often sexy and weird, and good fun. They're cult classics for every queer Batman fan I know. That said, yes, Reeves's Batman is my all-time favorite. It is the only Batman movie I've seen that really gets the comics, tone, and world as they've evolved.
With respect... Adam West was camp... The Schumacher films are just overly-flamboyant toy commercials. Everyone was miscast. The writing was bad. The aesthetic was awful. The butt shots were a joke. - A gay man
Zack was great with looks and somewhat fight scenes. Everything else his horrible at. He shouldn't be a director
Reason why to me Matt is the best director. His so big on details.
the only problem i had with the matt reeves' batman, its only good to watch in complete darkness, the cinema i watched at had kept some of the ceiling lights at their minimum brightness, so some parts of the film was so dark it was difficult to see because of the ceiling light.
It's so annoying that people think Battflecks version has no issues with killing innocent people. He does, that's the whole point of the movie. He has so much issue with it that he is willing to kills superman to make sure no more innocent people will die at the hands of him
wait ther was a spinoff show? i stop wachting after 3 episode of season 2, i tought they wil cahnge it to a monster of the week show that would be perfect.
I think Matt Reeves is the first director to show us that Batman is who Bruce Wayne is since his parents' murders and Bruce Wayne is the mask he wears.
I still remember when 6,748,922 different people pitched the exact plot of The Batman on Reddit/Facebook/UA-cam etc. from late 2008 until the movie’s 2022 premiere, even down to the deleted Joker scene where Batman goes and interviews him, a la Hannibal Lecter. But nah, you’re right. Matt Reeves is a unique genius. He’s unparalleled!
I remember as a kid having posters of Batman and Superman on my walls, I would imagine them swooping in and saving me from bullies or scary situations. Reeves' feels like THAT Batman. MY Batman, you know?
*Spoilers for The Penguin* “They’re all going to find their masks” Penguin finishes the show in full Penguin suit and top hat, being completely nuts, all while being the kingpin of Gotham. I’d say it’s a step in the right direction towards a more psychotic, supervillain-filled, fantastical Gotham, for sure. I think by the 3rd movie, Reeves WILL have opened up the world to having a Clayface or a Poison Ivy. It’s just not there yet. Remember, the MCU didn’t jump right from Iron Man to Guardians of the Galaxy. There had to be a few steps to get there first.
I remember reading Burton made the different buildings in Gotham have clashing architecture styles on purpose so it would seem ugly.
I feel like The Batman also understand Gotham and the Gothamites the best. The closests 2nd place was The Dark Knight Rises (especially with the introduction of Detective "Robin")
YES. I AGREE. KNEW I WASN'T TRIPPING. THIS SOLD ME ON BATMAN AS A LIFE LONG MARVEL UNIVERSE GUY AND DC HATER
found you with you last video and know watch like 10 videos of you! why do you have only 5k subs! ( i am the 5ksub)?' i realy cant wait for season 2 of andor i and hope we get more proer starwars anti facist movies Also i dont know many show how have a simlar look at a rebblion than endor and if ther is pls tell me!
great view on the show, the last season was in my minde also a littel weaker becurses it was to close to the real world, it also predictet what happen with the US. Also the actor is great he had a smal part in the netflix comdie show and its so wierd to see him. Also every part were he is in its just pure fear, wenn will he snap. Also the actor was great in aunty donna on netflix.
Been saying for over a decade that The Dark Knight is not a Batman movie.
Batman Returns is one of the movies at all time.
To me the best reinvention of a "Comic book hero" in a movie is Dredd, the most recent Dredd remake destroys the Stallone Dredd lol
to me the batman is the only real batman movie
The Batman movie might got the Batman character right, but the detective story was weak, the teamup with Gordon was good but underused, The Riddler was disappointing, Selina Kyle's story was weak too and unnecessarily bloated the movie. And then it finishes with a Marvel-esque flooding of the city. Honestly for every good thing the movie did , it did three dumb things, the tone was all over the place. I love the subtle character arc they gave Batman, really liked Robert Pattison, although the script didn't give him much to do imo. It could have been a great movie if tey had a good writer to elevate the story and the villains.
You need a batman for a self-contained universe and one for an extended
This video makes me like the movie even more! I hope the 2nd film lives up to the first
THE BATMAN was the first superhero film that felt genuinely comic book to me
Yep felt like watching Sin City - a true Graphic novel adaptation
The best tmnt movie is 1990 come on now
The only time I’ve ever watched a movie in theatres that I wanted to go right back in and re watch it. If you would’ve told me before seeing this that it would be one of my top 10 favorite movies of all time I wouldn’t believe you lol
This is why I firmly stand on the belief that the Batman is the best Batman movie. You can love the dark knight but I’m sorry, it is not a better comic book movie than The Batman.
I don't think he'll ever take it to Man Bat - but could I see a secret society of owl mask wearing people who have undead owl ninjas conduct political assassinations to guide Gotham's path by invisible hand? Absolutely.
It took for me to view the movie a second time to truly appreciate it. I really wasnt a fan of the look of Batman's cowl, how it seemed separate from the cape. But in that movie he can likely look over his shoulder, so okay it makes sense. I was really a fan of Affleck's Batmobile, so flashy. This one seemed to be just a souped up hot rod. But I get it, the stock car look is closer to it's muscle car roots. Plus, it would be a pretty sweet ride, wouldn't it? But after that second viewing I came to realize just how well written it was, and I warmed up to those visuals I hadnt really been fond of. Enjoying movies such as this makes me wonder, why stop at a trilogy? Movie makers always like to stop at three. Theres no rules. A quadrilogy wouldnt be strange, would it? Cuz if the quality remains, I'm going to be wanting more. 🙂
DC really needed a W
The best part about this movie is that you could take out all of the DC influences, and you'd still have an amazing detective film
You just tricked me into try to watch the movie. I went through 23 minutes and turned it off. Who paid you to do the video? I watched all previous movies, even though everyone complained how bad they were. And actually liked it. I only stand less than 30 minutes of this. Are you joking or something? Boring, long expositions. Flat dialogues. Emo batman. This is your "feel the world"? Even Alfred is not sophisticated British made of wood helper. But some kind of short baby sitter. With all due respect to actor. Zero actor pick is on target. Why? Just why? I don't get it.
The lego batman movie has an arc.
For me, the best iteration of the caped crusader is Christian but Pattenson's Batman was also great. Runner up to Heath Ledgers huge Joker. The only performance which is Genius is Colin Farrow's Penguin is so believable as sounding like guys I grew up with in Brooklyn. No trace of Scot
The Batman was so amazing, but after The Penguin it elevated it even higher. The setup for Batman 2 is crazy
I just can’t understand how you don’t see all the cringe moments in the Batman movie It has great moments but it’s not really that good
I love the way Pattison's Batman moves slowly when he's not fighting. Everything feels considered like he's constantly taking everything in. It's the first big screen Batman that feels like an actual detective. Brilliant movie and I can't wait for the next one.
batinson💔
Best live action version of the character…I think we can all agree that the arkham games are the best version overall tho of the character lol those games are pretty much the comics
I mean, "The Batman" is even more "grounded" and "realistic," so by your earlier definition, wouldn't it be "not a comic book movie" either?
The moment they announced Matt Reeves was directing a Batman movie I knew it was gonna be fantastic. I loved what he did with the Planet of the apes films, the man knows how to make movies.
I heavily disagree on a lot of what you said about the Nolan movies. I found Nolan's Bruce Wayne *very* interesting, particularly in the first and third movies. I will admit he's at his least interesting in the best film of the trilogy, but even there he's my personal favorite character. I love seeing him develop his fundamental morals in Batman Begins, I love seeing him struggle to maintain his morality in The Dark Knight, and I love seeing him rise back into the mantle of Batman and, eventually, learn to move on from it in The Dark Knight Rises. If you actually take the time to look at the behind the scenes stuff, you'd see that Nolan genuinely wanted to make sure that Batman wasn't overshadowed by his villains. It's just that TDK and TDKR are about Gotham as a whole, not just Batman, not to mention Bale's performance was *vastly* overshadowed by Heath Ledger's. The idea that Nolan's Gotham has no character is objectively incorrect. All three have something to say about Gotham, TDK and TDKR especially showcasing so much of how the people view Batman and the criminals he faces. We see the public's response to the Joker's threats constantly in The Dark Knight, and we see how they try to defend themselves without Batman in The Dark Knight Rises. What you mean is that Gotham lacks the usual Gothic visuals it should have, which, yeah, I'll give you that.
