hunter t. johnson (he/him) is a dynamic young composer with a rapidly growing catalog of choral works, art songs, and chamber pieces. He takes inspiration from issues of social justice and conflict, working to give voice to sentiments and ideas that he feels are ignored in everyday life. In composing vocal works, he seeks poetry and texts that range from those that explore nature and beauty to those that examine social issues such as self-harm, suicide, and other traditionally avoided topics. He has completed commissions for art songs and choral works, including several works for Grammy Award-winning soprano Christine Brewer.
An active choral musician, hunter has performed with and conducted groups in concerts across the United States. He is one of the co-founders and the conductor of the choral ensemble catenary. hunter’s composition Stars was awarded the 2017 Missouri Choral Director’s Association Opus Award.

Stumbled upon this piece while clicking through choral music recordings. Clicked it, not knowing what to expect. When it finished, the tears wouldn't stop falling. There were so many emotions this piece made me experience in the span of a moment. Grief, uncertainty, hope, love, and most of all, that tender feeling that tells you it's going to be okay. Now here I sit, a sobbing mess of a man touched by this piece unlike any other. If I could go back and experience this song again for the very first time with a fresh set of ears, I would do it in a heartbeat. Your piece was a light that has helped me out a dark place tonight. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
i’m so glad that it found you in the moment that you needed it! thank you very much for your kind words; i’m honored to hear that it spoke to you.
What program do you use to create the sheet music?
@@SethEngel Sibelius!
@@huntertjohnson I thought so, I use MuseScore to create my own compositions and arrangements
An arrangement of this for TTBB would be beautiful
@@smcannon29 thank you; i think so too!
oh my god. A poem by richard siken turned into a choral work. Absolutely amazing.
Lovely. Glad to have discovered your music today! :)
thank you very much!
gut
Oh wow, that hurt in the best of ways. Was admittedly not expecting to cry this early in the day, but you captured aching and longing and catharsis so well. Thanks so much for this!
Stunning harmonies!
oh man this is incredible. I'm singing along at home and can feel every word of the performance directions... let alone imagining what it would be like to sing this in a choir. thank you for creating such beautiful music :)
just wow. need to program this
Feel free to reach out via my site, and let me know how I can help!
lovely
Folksong, Love Song.
this really is stunning, having only listened and performed the Esenvalds version of these words by Sarah Teasdale, and I can say with confidence this is every bit as, if not more, beautiful.
this means a lot to me, thank you so much!
thanks for placing the compact piano version on the bottom, it really helps for understanding the harmonies
it takes so long but it’s worth it 😂 if you check out my “a beautiful boy” that reduction took FOREVER
Hello there. I'm from Greece and I study in a music university and I really want to become a choral director. If i make it i was thinking on working at this incredible piece. Is there a chance they can send it here in Greece?

I'll have to try this out sometime!
What a beautiful song! you're easily one of my favorite composers of this century. Never stop
thank you!!!
Wow
this is amazing, all your works make me wish i could sing lol
Absolute rubbish. Bad Eric Whitacre.
Omg that ending🤍😭 As an alto I loooove that 9th clash with the soprano. Utterly beautiful. I’ve sung this poem to a different melody and it’s really interesting to see a more melancholic approach
i love my altos!!!!!
This piece is wonderful, I hope I have an opportunity to perform this in the future.
wow. just wow. the way the choir explodes from a unison on the word “touches” gives me chills. its incredible. thank you for your work!

i had a chance to finally sing the tenor line this past summer; a couple moments of “ooh, that’s a hard leap!” 😂
I've recently come across your pieces randomly on a rabbit hole of choral music and I genuinely think you might be my favourite composer of the 21st century. I have never heard music like this, it's like what I hear in my head but never know how to transcribe. I wish I could write like you it's just gorgeous
you are so kind, thank you!! i owe most of it to the poetry 😅
this is severly underrated. amazing!
