Postlude | Jonah Cohen
Postlude (2024) for piano trio
Abigail Ko, violin
Ari Peraza-Webb, cello
Shiqin Wang, piano
In writing music, I often feel myself drawn to propulsive rhythms, driving ostinati, rapid and complex changes of meter, and a constant sense of motion. To put it bluntly, I really like writing fast music. However, I recognize the emotional and dramatic power of slower, more lyrical material, and have been wanting to explore this realm further in my work. So when one of my colleagues challenged me to write a piece that is entirely slow in tempo, I jumped at the opportunity. Postlude is the result of this endeavor. Essentially, the piece is a series of alternations between a flowing, free melodic section and a delicate, nostalgic chorale. Although the two sections are kept separate, they influence each other, causing one another to morph and change as the piece progresses.
Thank you so much to Abby, Ari, and Shiqin for a fantastic performance and for being such wonderful collaborators through the rehearsal process! Huge thanks also to my teacher, Dr. David Ludwig, for his invaluable support and guidance.
This recording is from the second performance of Postlude, which took place on October 21, 2024 at the Juilliard Composition Concert in Paul Hall at The Juilliard School in New York City, NY.

Music for a Dream (2024) for percussion and piano Ji Hye Jung, percussion Jeewon Park, piano Alan Bise, recording engineer Music for a Dream is my attempt to musicalize a recurring dream I had as a child. Romp | Jonah Cohen

Romp (2022) for orchestra Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra Christopher Wilkins, conductor Romp is a short fanfare for orchestra which does exactly what its name suggests: roughly and energetically stomps its way from beginning to end. The music is allowed to “play” in a literal sense; it runs jauntily about, jumps and twirls, and takes a moment to catch its breath before wildly sprinting towards ...

Where We Are | Jonah Cohen

Where We Are (2023) Eloise Fox, soprano Jonah Cohen, piano The title of this song, Where We Are, is a quote from American writer Edwin Arlington Robinson’s (1869-1935) poem titled XV, which I set to music through this piece. XV is part of a larger collection called Octaves, a series of 28 intensely personal statements which deal with Robinson’s own view of humanity and of the world at large. XV...
Ouroboros | Jonah Cohen

Ouroboros (2023) for solo viola Will Sotiriou, viola The ouroboros is an ancient symbol which depicts a serpent or dragon eating its own tail. It is often interpreted as a symbol for eternal cyclic renewal and a metaphor for infinity. How does this archaic idea relate to a seven-minute piece for solo viola? This composition effectively consumes itself, just as the ouroboros devours its own body...
