As someone who fenced, 20 years agot, with short hair and now have extremely long hair, and had never heard of non confirming hairstyles this was a great explanation
You are still amazing!!
coach if fencer A (3/4 victory) gets more victory than fencer B (2/4 victory) BUT A (15-12=3) total scored less then B (16-10=+6) then should I rank A number 1 or B?
The first criteria for seeding after pools will be percent victories (1st). It doesn't matter how many touches. If the percent of victories is tied the next criteria (2nd) will be Indicator (Difference between hits sent vs hit received.) If the indicator is tied (3rd) than the person who sent more hits seeds above the person who sent less. Hope that clarifies.
Great video
thank you! the most clear explanation! (and i loved the historical/pool noodle visual part 😉 😁 )
Glad our shenanigans helped! Feel free to share with those who would benefit from this!
Nicest guy ever I miss him
Great interview. I know the Pryor family and they are great people. I coached Jason's brother for several years on the HS Varsity level. Jason came to my camps in the summer when he was younger and was a fantastic kid.
Brilliant
We need more of these with Dr. V.
great video ! very well explained !
Glad you liked it!
Generally good information. but the explanation of how to deal with seeding fencers from different pool sizes was sketchy and confusing. It's typically more straightforward to understand if the victories divided by bouts fenced is expressed as a true percentage (i.e. 80% or 100%), as opposed to calling it a percentage, but then saying "eight hundred" vs. "a thousand". Likewise, showing fencers having fenced different numbers of bouts on the same score sheet is potentially confusing.
Wonderful playing!
Thanks so much, my class is having a class tournament and we all have to learn this, and while I can read it, I didn’t understand how to properly make it though, and this helped so much.
It's for students/parents of students of the sport like yourself that we made this. Glad to have helped! Feel free to spread the word for those who want the explanation!
It remains a brilliant tutorial “I call it “close combat training/fencing”. 💪🤺
Love it!

Same lol
One of the better videos for explaing parry 5 out there. I'm a beginner to sabre combat, but have an incredibly short attention span, so being able to watch videos like these outside of practice helps me hone my skills a lot!
Glad we can help. It's common for fencers to be ADHD. The beauty of the sport is that it happens at the speed of our brains. ;) So, if you can learn to slow things down a hair in order to learn it, you brains and body will appreciate being able to go the speed it wants.
@@cyranosplace8356 muscle memory is the most important thing for me, personally. I have around 10% vision on my right eye, so I have to be quick to react to more than just visual cues. Parry 5 in particular is one I have to compensate for. Despite being on my right as well, parry 3 isn't too difficult for me. Oddly enough, I struggle the most with parry 4, despite being on my good side. I guess I've put less effort into it, and as such gotten less practice.
@@DS_DoggerX Suggestion: trying drilling with a partner/coach with your eyes closed. This forces you to 'see' with your body/fingers or kinetically. If you give yourself a chance, there is SO MUCH you can 'see' with your fingers that one frequently doesn't 'see' when their eyes are open. Let us know if that helps!
@@cyranosplace8356 that sounds like an interesting challenge, and one that would be a good learning experience. I'll give that a shot!
Whats the size of it
You can make it as large/small as you like. The cardboard in back is to protect surfaces behind the target.
Clearest explanation by far
Thanks
Cool
Love it. I hope you can talk to some of the vicious, friendly and tenacious women fencing in the UK in the future! <3
This is a 'snippet' of the entire project I'm still working on. In the full version, we have a couple of your amazing women to share their thoughts! So, stay tuned. More to come!!!
@@cyranosplace8356 Brilliant! :-)
Have you asked them?
@@MsWageSlave I asked women in the fencing community to answer a series of questions last winter. Over 30 responded. This is a very small piece of the material I have to put together to Celebrate women in Fencing.
@@cyranosplace8356 I used to fence not so at the minute. I really liked this. I'm in the UK.
Genius Sara, i love it
You are welcome to come by our club and test it out yourself! We have a couple of them. Rocky River HS have 3 for training!

god tier fencing
FWIW, i see an awful lot of what i would call covering of the valid target area with the unarmed hand.
I believe that's the camera angle.

very well done, great Ted sounds like a voice from the sky though.
Thank you so much for this. I just started fencing a couple weeks ago and I'm 15 so all the kids my age have been doing this for a while. Right now I'm still learning the basics and this type of teaching really helped me, especially the repetition of the slogan "Drop, Pendulum, and Hit". I wish there were catchy ways to remember the other 7 parrys. Thank you so much.
You are exactly who our target audience is! New Fencers! You've embarked on a wonderful journey in our sport! Should their be something you would like clarified, we would love to hear from you. Because if you have questions, someone else does too. And, we are here to help. Info at CyranosPlace dot info
@@cyranosplace8356 Thank you so much! I love the way you explain in your videos, it really helps me, especially seeing you do it multiple times. One thing that gets me is different opponents' fencing styles. What I mean by that is that different people have a different playing style, so it would be so amazing if there was a video on how to attack and defend against the main styles people use. Styles meaning : Fencers who play offense and wait for you to attack, fencers who hit your blade a lot and move around a lot to confuse you, and also left handed fencers, etc. I hope you understand what I'm talking about since this would be really helpful for me and other new fencers. Again thank you so much!
@@urmom-ci3rs This is a more in depth conversation. If you wish to call, you and other fencers are welcome to call us at 216-227-DUEL. If we can break what you are asking into small enough parts, we can potentially make a video.
Great bout. Thanks for sharing. The call at 2:40 really defines how the whole bout went. That action is the biggest point of contention in saber. I can sympathize with the frustration.
Though the angle isn't great, I wouldn't argue with you that 2:40 looks like attack left. But four Attack in Preparations for FotR in the first half resulted in that call and defined the bout, not the other way around. Not sure it's contentious though, so much as difficult to see and call consistently.
Let's go will!
Here you go Ndjeka J

You had a great time! Congrats!!
You had a great time!!! Congrats!
Looks like so much fun
Maybe sometime, you folks can come up for our RYC. Look forward to seeing more of my fencing family.
Ted, Joe, and Dan DeChaine....the Holy Trinity of US armory. I've worked with Dan and Ted...sadly, never met Joe.
'Uncle Joe' was a gem! He LOVED to wear bad pun t-shirts to events. Always a smile and positive attitude even when telling about something negative. I will miss that awesome human being!
Even though you're using a sabre some of those parries are in relation to foil. Parries 6 through to 9 are redundant in sabre as they were designed to protect the off flank and the rear while on horse back.
Yes, you are correct!
Scenario: B2 tournament, top 12 fencers have the potential for getting a rating. In the pool of 16, the number 12 seed loses their bout. Instead of finishing the tournament #12, the fencer can end up #14. How and why does this sometimes happen?
Final strength of a tournament depends on placement of fencers. There is a 'cheat sheet' that explains the requirements for a tournament to be a B2 event. For a tournament to be rated, there are 2 requirements. So many rated fencers in the field to start. And, how many of those rated fencers must be in the top X fencers. If a rated fencer loses their DE bout before that round, it could effect the strength of the event.
I think I didn't phrase it correctly. When someone exits the pool the 12th seed, what can occur to have the fencer finish lower than their seed? Is it just someone with a lower seed than 12 upsetting someone with a higher seed than 12? Or are there other factors?
@@michaelrickert1284 The placement is based on the round that the fencer achieves. If the fencer is seeded 1st but loses in the round of 16, they obviously don't finish 1st. They would finish 9th. The final placement is based on the round finished. In other words, you look at everyone that was knocked out in that round, and the higher seed finish higher in that round than the lower seed. Again, this is why seeding matters. ;)
I’ve met this guy at my fencing place and it was cause my coach new him and were friends cause he was in the olympics too and I got his automotora oh and a Pic. And he was really nice and it was a fun expierienfe to have for meeting somebody known in the olympics
What a useful and perfectly explained advice from Maître d’Armes Dr. Volkmann! Bravo Master Volkmann and the Cyrano’s Place!
Which computer tool do you use or can you recommend?
USA Fencing result submission for regional cups and such are connected with Fencing Time. I find Fencing Time is like tournaments for 'dummies'. It's very easy, explanatory, easy to teach. The biggest 'problem' with any software is getting the initial database set up. With Fencing Time, you can download it directly from Askfred, and all is compatible. Over time, the database set's itself up. Once the tournament has been set up, I've had my daughter run my tournaments as young as 12. (Yes, her work is checked before next rounds are started. No, she's not a fencer. ) I'm familiar with other software that is quite efficient. But, haven't used them tournament after tournament. Hope that's helpful.
As always good work, thank you coach 🤺
feel free to share with those who want explanation!
Great, informative videos! I didn't know about using file cards for seeding in the past. Very interesting.
Knowing how the sport has evolved helps understand what one is dealing with, we believe. It also gives an understanding on how to potentially improve... it also says how long some of us have been around collecting moss... ;)
I love these videos. I love fencing 🤺 but haven’t been able to fence since last year. These videos really get my spirits up.
Then you are the KEY audience for our channel. Tell your friends! Stay tuned!
Good luck with your new undertaking, Maia! .... It is good to try new ways even in fields of strong traditions, yet traditions are "the shoulders of the giants" most innovators step on in walking their one paths .... That's why the "traditional" fencing nations like France, Hungary, Italy and Russia are still on the top .... You have Italy across the Adriatic (or a few hours drive), Croatia borders Hungary. Don't ignore these opportunities to learn from them .... Good luck!
One way to get fencers to learn to keep their foot low is to put a coin under the ball of the foot and then have them kick the coin with their heel as they lunge.
The only 'problem' with that is if you are on a floor that can be scratched up. Another way is to put a glove (probably folded) under the heal of the foot for the same drill.
Great video. I’ve been teaching the lunge like this for years, but had never figured out the physics of it.
