Oathsworn Wants To Be Your Friend - A Review
Solitarius reviews the story-driven, boss-battling, tabletop RPG-lite game Oathsworn: Into the Deepwood (Standee Version). He discusses his experience of exploring the Deepwood for 20 hours or so. Usually Solitarius isn't really into campaign games or tactic boss-battlers. Will Oathsworn win him over?

Synopsis: "This game didn't make me miserable, so I hate it" Seriously? Complaining a whole bunch about how the designers worked hard to make the game fun...dude, go play some Catan so you can have the miserygasm you're craving.
Living next door to a dance club is so annoying.
Thank you for the video, your last con talked me out of adding Aftershock to my pledge hours before the PM closes! I always thought the base game would be enough :D
Insta subscribed, loved your explanation!
You have some very good points here, but why does at 13:40 the music suddenly kicks in ? :)
This game is my favoirte game as of now solo is super fun.
U moved orange peg for Ireland and workers and blue peg for election projections?
Great video and editing!! I love the lighting and your background. I Really wanted Oathsworn so badly. But I decided against it as it was a bit dark for my daughters. But would still love to play at some point! Great stuff!
Dude, I traded Aeon Trespass Odyssey for this. The micromanagement from ATO was giving me an aneurysm. And as the cycles went on it got progressively worse. Cycles 4 and 5 (expansion) coming soon to me are being sold as soon as they get here. So yeah, Oathsworn was a soothing balm for the wounds ATO inflicted. And solo all the way for both games I mentioned.
I just stumbled over your videos and instantly subscribed 👍 thanks for your great and well made content, which will cost me some money!
i’m not sure what you were trying to get out of this game because 1000 other people say the story is a masterpiece with great tactical decisions. It’s a little confused here. Sounds like it’s a personal preference.. it almost sounds like this isn’t your game style because you described the game what’s expected from it?
I was trying to get a new gaming experience, and decided to dive in due to the overwhelming positive hype. I think that hype is mostly deserved too. It is a very lovingly and skillfully crafted game. I made the video to add a dissenting voice--not to stir up controversy or bash a popular board game, but to give people unfamiliar with the game or the genre all the information as honestly as I could. I'm not a reader of dark fantasy or a consumer of that content generally (though I do enjoy Lovecraft/mythos stuff), so I found the story to be a bore. And you are right, it is very much about personal preference. Gaming is about having fun, and fun is always subjective. I do not fault others for loving this game; if anything, I am a bit jealous that I could not find the same spark of enjoyment that they could.
Obsession the political version.
The game doesn't mention Zombies ANYWHERE!! 🙂
I finally beat it. This game is on masterpiece level. The story was phenomenal. Game play is among the best. The worst part of this game for me was wandering through the Deep wood. But I liked it any way
I picked this up years ago on a sale. Some how got it for $50 which is super cheap for this game. Its amazing. I did the kickstarter no questions asked. I forget if you mentioned it but a huge pro is that each character gets a story mode. The value in this box is great
Great video! Oathsworn looks like an awesome game, and I would totally love the grimdark fantasy feel. Happy gaming!
I love this game solo and prefer it over multi. I tried at 4P and it felt like a slog. I think a big part of why I enjoy it is because of the awesome minis that I am having a blast painting each encounter.
I definitely can see someone who paints minis loving this game!
I played this game with my brother with each controlling 2 full characters. I don't imagine playing with companions as the position of your characters plays a vital role during the encounter and just having 2 actions really miss the point.
The decisions in this game seem way too complex for me. Pass.
Yeah, it's definitely at least a 4 on the BGG weight scale. Not for everyone!
@@Solitarius_games not to mention the dexterity required to hold all those dice in the final step! Sheesh!
just commenting to say solid content, i hope your channel grows. :)
Thanks for the kind words!
Nice review. I have not played Plum Island Horror yet, but I don't mind long games, so that issue is not a problem for me. The pacing/tempo issue is a potential problem, and I encountered that in The Struggle for Zorn. For that game I added some house rules (which I covered on my channel) and I am sure I can tweak Plum Island Horror similarly. Which should also take care of the third concern ... should the game end when the Civilians are all rescued .... maybe! That might be the simple answer. Or add secondary goals/objectives that keeps the "second half" of the game more engaging. Yes, I agree that it would have been best if these things had been addressed during playtesting and added before release. But I believe that the game can be enjoyable for many gamers as is, without future expansions or house rules ... but for highly experienced gamers that are skilled at time-pressured escalating cooperative games, Plum Island Horror might end up being somewhat disappointing to them. Nonetheless, I look forward getting this game to the table later this year.
BGG top board game of all time! ❤
Excellent first foray into the world of serious game design! You got this ... Excelsior! 😉 Happy April!
Take my money
An incredible leap forward for historical board gaming.
Would play. Would publish.
It's a small game in a small box. It's really good, but a game can be good and small. You can teach it in a minute, plays really fast, small in every way.
I'm not looking for new titles or genres, 'cause in my country there are not many games available to buy (even on second hand market). That's why I'm starving to play some good old dungeon crawlers or point salads
"players collectively discard two cards" means two cards in total. May be 2 by one character or 1 and 1.
A note on the first impressions. Some of the things mentioned have been reworked in the latest draft rulebook: "EXODUS, ACTION DICE SYMBOLS & WILD ACTIONS: The Exodus action has been removed from action dice and replaced with an additional Maneuver face. The Exodus action is now called the special action, and purchased much as wild actions previously were: By spending two dice on your turn. An unspent all-seeing die can now also be one of these two dice. All other wild actions were removed."
Great content, the algorithm will surely bless this channel soon!
Ha, I sure hope so!
Thanks for the review. I'm in a similar boat, I love this as well, and am also waiting for SFG to ship my old pledge. Need to get this back on the table, too. :)
I hope SFG comes through; I must admit, I'm nervous about even more money being tied up in this game.
Hi - great review! I've played this a few times solo and today got my first 3 player game in. I was looking through the solo scenarios and one of them lets you (and maybe a second player too) start off as backbenchers against a clockwork Prime Minister and a clockwork Leader of the Opposition. That brings the multiplayer career cards into play too - so there is a way of getting to experience the full range of options and roles in the game even if you'll only ever play solo or as a pair. Be warned though - it's a tough life as a backbencher as I found out in my 3 player game!
You are right! That's a scenario I haven't tried yet--most of my plays have been the standard solo mode (playing through the various politicians)
IMO, it is too simplified to say that your sole objective is simply to evacuate a certain mass of civilians. The goals of the game are multi-faceted: evacuate civilians, avoid overrun of the island, avoid contamination reaching some level of critical mass - while every faction avoids getting wiped out. … and yes, those things need to be accomplished and sustained for a minimum period of time. It is a long game, no disagreement there. Yet, longevity is a prerequisite to success! If one focuses only upon evacuation of civilians, one risks other long term goals. If player actions are skewed early towards evacuation, one risks losing by failing to accomplish other goals. There are even game chaos that can negatively impact one’s evacuation points such that simply getting to 26 May not win you the game. What balance is needed?, how will the chaos of the game impact the balance going forward, disrupting one’s plans and forcing plan adjustments?, etc. etc. My play throughs have had plenty of tension going very late into the game, even until the last turn. Don’t make it so one dimensional - it wasn't designed to be considered thusly. Yes, it is a long game - that is a very valid description. I believe the balance, chaos and tension extends deep into round play when one accepts there are more objectives that simply evacuating civilians.
Really well done review. I appreciate how clearly you communicated your thoughts. You mentioned Dawn of the Zeds is best with expansions. Do you mean the small expansion packs? Or using the higher difficulty modes already in the base box?
I meant the expansions included in the 3rd edition--although I have an use the small ones as well. The small expansions aren't really nice to have, but not essential.
Great review - Could you compare the different solo adventure games and the pros and cons of each? I appreciate reviews, but putting the game in context the way you did with Plum Island and Dawn of the Zeds was super.
That actually sounds like a great stand alone video--I've played a ton of these adventure card type games. Hmmm, let me add that to the list.
Very surprising these issues didn’t come out in testing.
I have also found that while soloing, it is best to get right up next to Dimitri and just keep pounding him.
It does depend on the fighter. I like to try to build up the character first. Sometimes, however, Dmitri draws that rocket launcher early, forcing you to play more aggressively.
Even though the card says to move, I believe you need to still use the breakaway rule when next to an enemy.
Good catch--I believe I needed to discard one of my grapples to disengage.
I think Hermann just really prefers long games. I’ve played Zeds, A Spoiled Victory, PIH, Attack of the 50 Foot Colossi, Invaders from Dimension X. They’re all at least 2 hours, some push 3-4 hours.
This is true. I've played Zeds and Colossi and they are longer games. I like longer games, provided the gameplay justifies the length, of course.
How does the game scale with more players in terms of game play and difficulty? It seems like with one player you just get stuck and when people surround you, so you sorta lose that tactical element.
Thanks for watching! 1p is my preferred way to play. I did get myself into a pickle by letting minions stack, but it was because I knew that (1) I could maybe just take out the leader quickly, and (2) there was a chance of Dmitri getting that rocket launcher and lighting everyone up if I could get them bunched together. If a stage/boss combo is too hard, you can add an ally, and if it's a cakewalk you can add a rival.
@@Solitarius_games What sort of mental load would you say adding an ally or rival would be? I've heard this game is already a bit on the heavy side like sentinels of the multiverse.
It's a complex game, but not as heavy/complex as sentinels. Allys/Rivals are just a single card. In the case of the Ally, generally you just exhaust the card, giving the ally fixed movement and a fixed amount of dice to roll (so no additional card play). The initial mental load when using a new boss or stage can be high, because you don't know how the everything interacts until you play the boss/stage a couple of times. But once you've got it, it's not a big deal. If you are looking for a similar game, but one that is much simpler, perhaps take a look at Unmatched Adventures: Tales to Amaze. It's a boss battler, tactical minis game with card play like Street Masters, but very simple and streamlined. I've been contemplating doing a dual review comparing the two.
@@Solitarius_games Awesome, thanks for the info. It sounds like it wouldn't be too bad, and I think I would mostly end up playing 2 players with someone else anyway. Thanks for showcasing the game!
Thanks for the videos! Have you played any Hollandspiele games?
I have! I've played Agricola, Wars of Marcus Aurelius, Stilicho, and some others. Really fun little solo games!
Thanks for the video! While watching: Your first attack dealt general damage so Boris would have blocked that :) And cards are unique (can’t be played twice) if they have the star icon which is true for a lot of tactic cards.
Good catch on those. I did catch the card rule while editing--the problem was I parsing the card play rules from the rulebook literally, and no mention is made of limits or restrictions. The explanation of the star and unique cards is in card anatomy on the previous page :).
Prime minister looks very interesting!
Just discovered your channel, great content! I really was interested in the idea of Mr President, but it just does not fit my current lifestyle as a parent of 4 young kids. Thank you for this video, because I now see there is a great alternative here in Prime Minister!
Thanks for watching! Yeah, I understand what you mean. I have one young child at home and thus have nowhere near the gaming time that I used to have. Huge 20+ hour table hog campaign games are just not possible for me anymore. I found Prime Minister to be a great "move some things around on tracks"-style political game that doesn't take too long to play a full session and doesn't require dozens of charts and complex rules.
Nice work, as usual!
The UA-cam algorithm suggested your Prime Minister review to me a little while ago and I loved that review, how you covered the game, your examples and insights, your presentation style. Though Plum Island doesn't draw my interest I watched this one as well just out of curiosity, and I have to say I love your commentary and style yet again. Your examples are clear and complete, just as long as they need to be, and you actually *review* the game, your likes and dislikes & criticisms. I'm glad I subscribed, keep doing what you're doing. You have a great channel here and hopefully there will be a lot more!
Thanks for the kind words and support for a fledging UA-cam channel!
These are exactly the points that I don't like about the game. You nailed it. The Game needs more eskalation in any form whatsoever. Hope for the expansion but a game should also work without expansion and without house rules.
Glad to hear I'm not alone! I think GMT needs to release a rules supplement (for free) that includes AT LEAST scalable difficulty levels and maybe a short scenario or two. Easy fixes like that shouldn't be stuck behind a paywall.
There is Nightmare mode they should make it official, but it still doesn't solve all the problems@@Solitarius_games
For me, the lack of escalation is the kicker. The game time is divided into three days--the danger and difficulty should increase predictably as the rounds progress. Every game I played had some kind of lull or moment where the game stalled out.
Nice review style... Subscribed 🙂
Thanks! I just try to make the types of the reviews that I would want to watch!
I see Votes for Women!
Yes you do! I need to do a playthrough or something of that one…
Great first episode! i like the mix of games. I am looking forward to seeing more from the channel.
Thanks for watching! I've got plans for more :) I hope to get a new Table Talk episode out soon!
