Size of a couch to... Epic trail run in the Cairngorms, my longest to date with a soggy end.

Decided to do a 30km plus run on rough terrain on legs that were already tired...why? Really good question. Basically trying to practice the second half of the ultra marathon I will be doing, hopefully, on Tiree. Ollie brought his new bike along but wished be had run it instead. September 2023 was an incredible time on the coast of Scotland with Nairn on the Moray Firth hosting over 67 feeding Basking Sharks. I took a chance to get some stunning footage above and below the surface of the sea.

The Great Glen Way is a long distance path between Inverness and Fort William. At 78 miles and 1500m of climbing most people take 6 days on foot or three on a bike. We tried to do it in one!! A week before it had been 23degree C, oh what a difference a week makes!! My oldest son Ollie has been selected as one of Scotland's representative for the World Scout Jamboree in South Korea. I love getting out to take landscape photos once the sun has gone down so with cold temperatures and fog forecast I headed up a small hill to watch and capture the world below. I also took some time to photograph Braemar's message to the world in these 'interesting' times. Please note this film was intended to be out on the 30th of December so a belated Happy New Year. My friend, who also completed Tiree this year, just shared your video with our running chat. Huge well done 👏 very inspirational
Well done!. My husband ran it this year too. He said nothing was happy about happy Valley😂.
You’re an inspiration 💪 see you on Tiree next year!!
aw yeah 😎
Looks like such a great walk, will need to go there and see if i can spot the beavers, one of my favourite animals. Cheers!
Fascinating.
Brilliant blog mate, may I ask what gimbal head are you using.
Incredible video!
Stunning aerial shots. Lovely to see so many in Nairn this year - been incredibly elusive for a few decades. I remember watching dozens in a matter of hours heading north each year at this time on the Ayrshire coast, about 30 to 40 years ago.
Great video
Was great thank you Ian
Wow, That was amazing! Thank you so much for sharing this. 🙂
Fabulous! Thank you!
Hi Ian, that was me with the puncture there. Thank you very much for taking the time to help us. It was much appreciated but unfortunately my tyre was unrepairable so I walked to Dalwhinnie before getting picked up
Wow well to you both!
Love your channel, being familiar with Multiple, I really enjoyed your videos and the information together with photographs
Amazing photos, tá siad go iontach. I'm from Ireland and the Capercaillie has been extinct here for nearly 300 years. Its great to see that people have a passion for endangered Indegenous wildlife so please keep up the good work Bí sábháilte agus sláinte
Nice one Ian I've also photographed them at brid in the past.
I just love Mull and that sound of calmac I could hear that from the Craignure Campsite 😂😂😂
Such majestic bird! following the channel!
Harriers are known as the sky dancer of the sky , good video .
Hi Ian, not quite related to this vid but recently watch nice ones of your Mull trips, Im off their soon and would like to ask your advice re best focal length specifically for the eagles. As its hard to judge the distance they are from the boat on video. Thanks
Wow! that's great!
I’m on Mull right now and I’ve seen golden eagles and so many other birds. Mull is magical …
Very lucky, we go on Friday for the second time this year but we struggle to find goldies
I think why the female capercaillie came to you is kinda same thing as here in Finland, sometimes Capercaillies come to humans during lek or after it, females being messed up from hormones or desperate to get mated.
Very low audio sound, cannot hear what is being said is a bit muffled also, room acoustics. Maybe a microphone would have helped.
Wow 10 years. That's a lot of years haha. This is my second spring observing these charismatic birds
Great seeing some local content.
Where did you get the wrap for the R6?
Ythan Estuary. I know it well. Not too far from where I am (Mearns area). I've just ordered the R6 and the RF 800 f/11, should be here next week sometime. I'm keen to see how this set up performs compared to my current set ups (1D MK iv, 5Dsr, 500 f/4L and Siggy 150-600C along with a few others). Good video.
Wonderful place. V jealous of the 500 f4, always a dream lens. All the best. Ian
@@IanHayWildLife Cheers Ian. Pity your dream lens wasn't a Sigma 800 prime (massive bloody thing). I've one I'm considering moving on.🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@Skinhead-201 Ok, so cheeky factor 100. Any chance of a try with it? It would make an interesting film. If so please drop me an email.
@@IanHayWildLife Aye, of course. I'll message over the weekend sometime.
@@IanHayWildLife I've messaged you via yer website Ian.
Great video, Ian! I have a trip to Mull & Skye booked for this year and cannot wait! It'll be my first time visiting so very much looking forward to it! Is there a need for a longer lens with species such as otters? I have a 100-400ii which I can see you've already commented would be sufficient for the WTE on the boat trip, but wondering if a 600mm would be needed too? (Sigma zoom, not the Canon prime unfortunately!)
Thanks. Hope you have a wonderful trip. 600mm would be ideal. I used a 300 2.8 with a times two converter for most photos. Ian
@@IanHayWildLife appreciate your response, Ian, thanks 👍
Hi Ian, thanks for another great video, my wife and I are going up to the Cairngorms in April for a four day break based in Tomintoul... Looking forward to some early morning walks to hopefully get some wildlife and landscape shots before breakfast. Luckily we have a ground floor room with a front door, so we won't be disturbing other guests.... Could you please do us a favour...? Please reduce the difference in volume between spoken segments and the music interludes.... We are constantly on the remote moving volume up and down... Please don't take this the wrong way, you're not the only vlogger to do this.. And we really enjoy the films which otherwise are excellent.. Thanks again.. Steve & Pam Roberts...
Hi. Hope you have a great holiday and please get in touch if you need any advice, will help if I can but obviously not with certain venerable species (see caper films). Thank you so much for the feed back, really useful and I will try to do better in future films. Must admit the sound quality is always the biggest challenge. All the best. ian
Well done Ian . A Red Letter day in the hills and all the better because you planned it and carted all your photography gear up to capture it 😀😀 I have only encountered this once (so far) , many years ago , on Creise .Your video brought that magical moment right back to me -Many Thanks 😀😀😀
Simply stunning day. Thanks for watching. Ian
Nice one, Ian, some amazing views there, well worth the yomp up the big hill. Those clouds and the movements twinned with a sunrise are indeed, magical. I'm hoping to be out on Dartmoor early in the morning, weather dependent for a phot or two. All the best for Christmas and the New Year, Mark S.
Did your walk go well. Ian
@@IanHayWildLife , yes, if it's the day I think it was :-) I caught up with the Fieldfares. If it was the next day, all I caught up with was mist and rain.
Great stuff! Can't beat a bit of otter action...
Always great to see. All the best. Ian
Great vid buddy, thanks fr sharing the experience, i'm off there soon so it was good to see, i spend a lot of time in Scotland but Mull is one island i never seem to get to 🙄.... have a new Subscriber... JP
Great thanks, wonderful place. My next two vlogs are a bit more landscape but the one that I uploaded today is a bit special, well I think so. Ian
grey harrier is male..brown ones are female
Thanks, one of those mental blocks were you know the answer, but you also know you always get it wrong. All the best. Ian
Good footage!!! Thanks for sharing.
Highland cairngorms wildlife park fucking brilliant worth watching
100 400 would be ideal. I used my 300 2.8 which gave faster focussing but harder to keep the bird in the frame. Hope you enjoy the trip. Ian
Subscribed a trip I have yet to go on so great to see thanks for sharing ! They look hard to miss but the boat does move I suppose ! The 100-400 would do I suppose ?
Sorry for the delay. A 100 400 would be idea. All the best. ian
Lovely video x
Thanks Lynnette
Lovely video keep up the great work 👍
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it
I loved Scotland and that place. I stayed at Portree for a week and I'll never forget those wonderful places. Unfortunately I didn't see the sea eagles, but only the puffins at Lunga island. I hope to go there again really soon.
If you do come back please feel free to get in touch for help and advice. Thanks for watching. Ian
@@IanHayWildLife Thanks, I'll do it!!
