I wish to service my Ali model 1721L reel to reel recorder so how do I remove deck from casing

Hi Sound will probably depend on few more factors. Heads if they changed there was a reason, if they were worn machine was heavy used probably. It's not easy to kill those heads in my opinion and even if they have a marks of use visible they still can play good. Sound will depend also on electronics and of course on the tape quality and speed. Personally i made once a change to the heads and converted 2 track into 4 track, with a slight quality reduction but still great enough for domestic use. what could be worried in this case often people are changing heads into polished ones, so you cannot see that they are worned but they frequency response is cut off. Have a look at the rest of the machine and if it looks as not used to much or stored well you may take a risk. all depend on your abilities to repair those things.also you need to think about calibration. you can always lift frequencies on the oscilator or levels on the amps but this is for someone who know what he is doing. all depend what you need it for domestic or pro music production. Tapes wont be magnetised unkess they get hit with 2x the correctivity of the tape, heqds are actually pretty tough to magnetise just randomly unless you use a magnetic screwdriver which is a nono in these machines...but otherwise, they hse solenoids for the mechanisation. Tapes can take a lot actually

Hi, This is possible to record on two tracks but it has limitation. You can do it but only at the same time; one channel input one instrument and another channel second instrument. As son as you would like to record on this machine first track on one run of the tape and later second track on second run of the tape,, the first recording on other track will be erased as there is no way to switch off erase function for specific tracks. also this player is two heads only, there is no monitoring during recording. Three heads players were more sophisticated. usually they have separate buttons for each channel recording, some of them even had an option to record from one channel to another, so every time you could add one instrument at the time. my friend if you know, the answer... very welcome... as far as I can see you just can record from cassette, phono or aux... it have mic input, but i dont see how to record each track separetly

Hi , I would tell they are really indestructible machines. Of course you have to find a good one at the start. If they are abused or abandoned somewhere in cold sheds for 20-30 years they are not in the best choice Even not the best ones after rebuild will be still serving you and next generation. Regards

Slightly yes. But it is to the acceptable level. You can always calibrate that and it also depend on the tape as well. Regards

Hi thanks. I will be glad if it will be helpful. Mainly I have used on this one Maxell UD 35-90, 25-120, or TDK Audua L1800 and TDK LX 35-90b and sound was great. But also scotch 203 was also ok. I wouldn’t use older tapes from 50s or 60s those will work fine or revox but this machine was working better on tapes from late 70s and early 80s

The noise or hiss are from the 2SC458 transistors, those are notorious for noise. Every akai that carry those transistors needs to be replaced.

you need to replace all resistors, they are known for being noisy on these model.

i mean transistors, sorry.
