    Kayaking is NOT about avoiding or missing every feature. Get in there and play, point upstream and surf, hole ride, ender or something besides paddle by. Are you a beginner? I ask that because when I started well before the internet and youtube etc. We paddled as fast as we could thru rapids only to later realize it was giving us less time to react to the rocks and holes.

    Just out of curiosity, why use the seat if you have a kneeling thwart?

    • @drchip87
      @drchip87 10 місяців тому

      Good question. With all of the weight in the bow on this trip, paddling from the kneeling thwart wasn't necessary. My knees would rather the option of the relief of the seat sometimes if I don't need to be forward for weight distribution.

    Man he's really got that one man canoe thing down = and is having lots of fun doing it. To hell with kayaks this boy's competition level. Beautiful river, lots of changes in the stream, the scenery is class, but am impressed with the water. Was just saying how did some rivers in Michigan as a youth, loved it, then was out west where it was mostly class III-IV, kayaking, rafting. Moved back long ago, but just now rediscovered the rivers of my younger days: Manistee, Au Sable, etc. Want, like this, to see the river action south and east of Michigan. Ohio didn't impress me much. but like this. This is nice. Really, thanks for sharing.

    Nice run. Such a fun river. I run Double Reactionary from left to right. Strong left-hand boof stroke on the curler near the bottom, and I end up in the same eddy you ended up in. Of course, every boat I have taken down it has a lot more volume than the one you are paddling here. Hope to get back on this river again next year.

    Looks great! We usually kayak camp the Clarion in the spring, but are looking at Pine Creek for the last weekend in April this year. I'm not sure of the camping situation rules there. I've been adding waypoints to my route for mile markers and would like to add potential camp sites. Any advice?

    • @drchip87
      @drchip87 Рік тому

      The rules are tricky. In PA. You need a specific permit to back country camp in every separate county. On the trip we did that meant two different permits, then there are rules to follow as to where you can camp. Basically the only meaningful legal camping is in pre-existing sites. Around our first campsite there were many options. But we were lucky to find a single spot for our second night and in fact thought we were going to have to paddle out that day instead of getting to camp that night.

    Just for reference, on the day the video was taken (May 14, 2022) the water level was 9.07 feet. This was barely above American Whitewater's recommended minimum level. While there was enough water to be navigable, the river would have been more fun at a flow near the middle of the recommended range.

    • @nixon2tube
      @nixon2tube 2 роки тому

      @@drchip87 I don't know that you were or were not raising your head as the video doesn't really tell us that. Given that you aren't known for swimming, I would doubt this to be your issue as most of the head raisers swim almost every time. However, most folk do not experience the underwater resistance to coming up until they get into big water, which is what you had that day. You can tell because it seems that you're putting a ton of effort into coming up, but just not quite getting there. The solution is to go as you fall back down, and dive around and go up the other side. If the current is the culprit and you don't spin around, you'll find yourself hopping up almost supernaturally quick. However, that dive must be quick and clean because if not, it can cause you to spin around 90 degrees and then the same issue happens on the other side and life continues to suck.

    • @nixon2tube
      @nixon2tube 2 роки тому

      As an aside, I noticed in this video that you seem to struggle a lot with the water. Maybe this prevents your swims, but in the long run will cause you stress that is not needed. I know it is hard to not fight to maintain what you know to be the right, I don't know, posture maybe? But you almost have to go into brain dead druggie mode and just relax. You can go with the water, even if it drops you down and you have to roll. When this happens, you can feel this and ride with it. As a hand paddler, I embraced it. With a normal paddle, I don't anymore (and I'm not as good because of it), but sometimes I still do and roll, even at times others would look at me and wonder why I did. I guess I'm trying to say relax more. Sometimes I use what I call "Gondola" style. Where I literally lay down on the back of my boat and drive from way back there. I have no stability, but do not care as I am also setup to quickly back deck roll if need be, and it's really easy and relaxing. I guess I am now saying to learn a back deck roll as it is the bomb. ;) I guess I am most saying that relaxation is the best thing for you based on your video.

      @@nixon2tube appreciate the feedback, and always welcome for even more. I know that I was nervous for most of this run after Entrance, and was particularly nervous for Bottle of Wine when Matt said he thought it would be the hardest. My issue was feeling I didn't know the lines, and was struggling in distinguishing waves from holes (hence dropping into two holes in Bottle of Wine alone). Maybe that's some of it. But, I have found that when I'm more "comfortable" my body is looser, and that works out better. Gotta work on that more -- and find a way to start a run looser, as opposed to finding my looseness along the way.

    • @chuckbeattyo

      @@nixon2tube "....you almost have to go into XXXXX mode and just relax....." makes sense. I watch thousands of rafters and kayakers on the lower Yough, for years now, at much less stressful water levels though, and that kind of is a big point. And I watch a lot of pro kayakers, I call you guys, videos. There's a relaxed smoothness going on in your heads and postures, etc. Makes me wonder if the best rubber rafters guides, pros, would be good at cowboy wild horse breaking job, riding the bucking horses until they are broken and rideable.
