Time to move the pullets into their new kennel.
I’m not finished with the kennel but finished enough to go ahead and get the pullets in now. They need more space as they are growing fast. New perches and misc still waiting to come in the mail to finish their new house. One day at a time. I use my outside kennels for the summer and shed kennels for the winter. I’m slowly getting the spaces I need together to eventually increase my chicken sales.

    How are your barred rocks when it comes to eggs and poopy butts? I hear so many good things about the breed however, my two both have various issues. They both get horrendous poop on their butt, and I need to wash them off quite often. One of them is on borrowed time because her eggs, if and when she lays them, come out without a shell and have been known to get stuck inside her. Eventually, she will need to be culled so I’m just giving her a good life until that happens. The vet believes she’s just an oddball and does not process the calcium correctly. The other hen is better but even she has weak shelled eggs from time to time. Luckily her eggs are small so they end up coming out just fine. I’m wondering if I got a bad from the hatchery 2 1/2 years ago. It is what it is, but I’m curious if this is something that happens with this breed all the time or if it was just luck of the draw. Your black chickens are very pretty. Do their feathers shine iridescent green in the sun? That’s what my two black chickens do. I love it!

    • @havefaithfarms96
      @havefaithfarms96 Місяць тому

      All my chickens are sold eventually. I raise and sell different age groups. But the older barred rocks I had before I didn't have a problem with. A few of my clients will only buy from me as I raise them. They always tell me how good they're doing. My black ones are the Black Copper Marans. As soon as they are laying for awhile I'll be hatching and selling those as chicks.

What you have is too big for my pen but I bet I can modify a bit and have something similar. I would love to have a chicken run that's covered and as large as yours but we've spent so much time and money on what we have, that I simply can't make it bigger (yet)... but I like it anyway. Soon my video on the chicken tunnel we made will be out... that gave them more room.

    That's funny... Henry reminds me of my chicken Starla who always digs through the chicken feed to find the perfect pellet somewhere at the very bottom. Luckily, they will eat it off the ground. He sure got lively suddenly! Is it ever advisable to put them in a large pen area or will they escape and run off? Oh man... chickens under the rabbits... seems like they'll learn before too long. That's why I've removed so many of my chicken perches... everyone was getting pooped on! LOL The comment is getting longer and longer... lol... I watch and type as I go. I put my used straw in a compost pile but often there's too much so I'll spread it around areas needing mulch. I'm not always sure what to do with all the chicken poop that I scoop out of their coop (I let it fall on the wooden floor and scoop it out every day). Oh! Essential oil drops... that's a good idea. I have some lavender planted but it's never quite enough. There is a lavender farm near by that I pick from but that can get costly.

    I forgot about Charlotte! Is she growing at a normal speed now? I’m curious how they react out there compared to inside. My set up is way different so they end up inside a brooder box when they’re chicks and then eventually go out to the small coop. The first couple nights they were pretty frantic because they didn’t know where they should sleep. I love that set up where the other chickens can see them and get used to them.

    • @havefaithfarms96
      @havefaithfarms96 3 місяці тому

      She's doing good. Took her like 8 wks to fully feather out. She's still small, but we'll see how much she grows. Chicks did good in their new space. I think Charlotte helped them a lot too. They started getting higher on the perches today so should all be perching at night soon.

  • @phenixjiraliving
    @phenixjiraliving 3 місяці тому

    That's neat that they pick a particular corner to do their business. And I was going to ask how they are interacting with you and it sounds like they are playful. Is that a normal thing or because the person who bred them played with them? Wow... already that hot where you're at? Ugh. I'm not looking forward to when the heat hits my area. I always worry but we are working on another shade system to help with the front of the coop (it's in the direct sun but hopefully next year the trees will be tall enough). Thank goodness for fans!!!

    • @havefaithfarms96

      They will get territorial when you start to breed them. Once they are of age to breed and you do breed yes you have to separate them. That's what I've learned so far in my research. Sounds interesting. I've thought about rabbits and dismissed the idea quickly because I wouldn't have anything to do with them other than treat them like pets (like my chickens but they give me eggs). I have a friend who processed them and canned the meat but I'm really not interested in doing that. My son heard of someone who raises them and uses their fir to make yarn of some sort. That sounds fun but not fun enough for me to do it LOL!! Sounds like you're plan is to raise and sell. Have you had a lot of interest in people wanting to buy them?

I'll give it a try for a year and see what happens and go from there. I use to keep my chickens as pets years ago but but due to some changes I sold them all and quit for a bit all together. Now I make others happy when they come to pick out "their" pets :) And make a little pocket money to keep doing what I enjoy.

      The Marans are going to be my new permanent flock and I will be hatching their eggs when old enough and sell chicks. I also order chicks different breeds and all those get sold. I order because I can order pullets only, no one wants roos. And then once a year I help my neighbor with donations for his church at Easter. I'm always rotating. Trying to figure out a more permanent path and what I'm capable of doing. I love raising chicks but I don't really keep any for pets. Some do like me more than others, but it's a business I can't get too attached or I'd end up with more chickens than eggs in a month :) It also helps me make some extra cash to help pay for things, fix things, whatever. I'll be retiring soon so it'll help make up for some of the income I won't then be getting :) All in a nutshell. lol

    It's amazing how fast they go from chick to laying eggs LOL! The first couple weeks are so cute and fun to watch them. Huh... I've never given mine a foot bath but one of my hens keeps getting hard balls of dirt/mud etc that builds up in the pocket area of the bottom of her foot. She has fairly big feet compared to her sisters and somehow stuff gets in there. Speaking of poo on the boo... last summer I was walking through a local store that happens to sell chicks and I went to the front counter to let them know that at least half of their chicks had very bad pasty butt (or at least balls of poop in that area). The girl at the cash register was horrified that they could be like that so I explained it's very dangerous and could kill them. That made her move even faster. What I don't understand is how on earth they could all get that bad unless no one was really looking or taking care of them. I have never purchased chicks there and won't after seeing that.

    • @havefaithfarms96
      @havefaithfarms96 6 місяців тому

      I totally agree. I will only order my chicks and get them before anyone else takes care of them. In the spring/summer I do hatch some of my own. But yes, you can't just have chicks and ignore them. They need cleaned as well for health reasons. I don't want any of my chicks going to bed at night uncomfortable. We can only do our best. But one thing I know, when they get older and are rehomed, I know they are healthy and happy when they leave this farm. That's what makes me happy.
