June 10th Storm Aftermath - Brookgreen Gardens
Переглядів 2,9 тис.4 місяці тому
On June 10 at approximately 11:00 pm in the dark of night, a powerful storm blew through Brookgreen Gardens causing a wide swath of destruction. This fierce microburst produced straight-line winds in excess of 80 miles per hour, snapping mature trees in half and tearing limbs from many others. The damage from this terrible storm can be seen all along its path, from the river, across the Garden,...

How old is that tree? I've not seen them get that big. I'd like to put some near the house, but I didn't realize they got that big!
You can prune it for your space. I just bought one for my tiny garden but will prune so it stays manageable. It smells so delightful we will be getting 2 more and keep those pruned as well. Don’t let the mature size of something keep you from enjoying it, unless you don’t want to put in the work to maintain. If you have no problem with doing the extra care then I say get yourself one.
I love his Art. Very talented young men.
Way back in the mid-90s, i was able to attend a day of excavating the remains of an incinerated house that was believed to belong to Theodosia Burr-Alston, digging through dirt for artifacts with Jim Michie. I only found nails and a few old glass and ceramic bottles, but that day was memorable and i will always remember getting to see the old family cemetery, and learning a lot more about the history of the area I grew up in
Congratulations to all the exhibitors and award winners! Brookgreen Gardens is a magical place. So pleased to have our members' works exhibited there.
Really sad to see this. With more frequent intense storms as climate change continues, it worries me that this could happen again soon. I hope y'all recover soon <3
What of the statues? The zoo? The butterflies? It's good the Allee was left intact - I know from the tour it's popular with weddings, and that money will be helpful
We haven't found any damage to the sculptures, thankfully! Also the zoo animals were fine. The butterfly house was destroyed, but we were able to capture the majority of them and transport them to the butterfly exhibit at the North Carolina Museum of Science in Raleigh.
@@BrookgreenGardensSC Oh that's right - a lot were non-native, weren't they?
This is heart breaking! We were there last Sunday the 2nd and finally was able to experience the butterfly house for the first time. And then we returned on Saturday for the Summer Lights! I pray you collect enough money to help with everything! I’ll be donating as well to help!
Oh my goodness! How awful! I will be donating to help with the recovery efforts.
Thank you!!
Here in California we have the Huntington Library. Beautiful! If I am not mistaken, it was Arabella Huntington the founder. Her son, Archer Milton Huntington, was the founder of the Brookgreen Gardens. Which I assume it’s just as beautiful (never been). It’s wonderful to have such historical places. History and beauty are important. Historically, speaking, this video (unless I am mistaken) is missing a huge acknowledgment. A more direct reference to slavery. In fact, I believe at one point this place was owned by the largest slaveholder in the U.S. Per wikipedia, “Joshua John Ward (1800-1853) of Georgetown County, South Carolina, was the largest slaveholder in the United States at the time of his death in 1853, owning 1,092 slaves in 1850. Ward was known as "the king of the rice planters". His heirs owned 1,130 or 1,131 slaves in 1860. The Brookgreen Plantation, where Ward was born and lived, has been preserved.” The Huntington Library in California acknowledges to some extent its past and obligations. See link: huntington.org/land-acknowledgment It’s uncomfortable history of a beautiful place, but nonetheless, it’s history. I hope the new and revised Brookgreen Gardens production is more historically complete in acknowledging its past - it felt like something was missing…
Where to buy seeds?

Keeping farm life real! Hard and dirty work. Except feeding baby goats, what a joy that would be ❤️ Thank you taking such good care of them!

Wonderful video
Thank you for taking care of Brookgreen Gardens ❤.
Can’t wait
Born and raised on the grand strand and have been to Huntington state park more times than I can count. As a child Atalaya castle very much fascinated me and while I knew the story to an extent, I’m happy to know the full fleshednout history of it. Thank you for this gift and rip the Huntington’s
Wonderfully informative and nicely produced! Thank you for presenting this video!
Beautifully
Thanks for taking such good care of the animals!

My happy place.
It’s so interesting to me how the video discusses the genteel lifestyle but no mention is made of how enslaved labor made everything possible.
We actually are very aware of that and are in the process of shooting a new film right now. Hope to have it ready to release later this fall!

Who left their camera in the tree? I can go pick it up and bring it if they like I'm quite close.
Thanks for taking such good care of the animals!
I too love owning slaves and making them endure a recreation of absolute hell every day and then romanticizing it with a 20 minute documentary about the owners of the rice plantation and painting them in such a wonderful light. It's actually quite disgusting and reprehensible. You state that the owner just cared for animals so much and even rescued some of the wild animals and made a zoo uwu. It's kind of crazy to think that he did the same to black people. If your god is the true judge, you will too face your day where you are rejected at the gates and plummet into the depths of misery that your family has inflicted on others for the past century. You are not innocent. You are complacent in rape, torture, and the deaths of hundreds of slaves. You proudly wear this mass murder on your chests. You are perpetuating a disgusting narrative. How do you go on with your lives? Do you have to lie to yourself every day in hopes that you'll come off as the peace loving trad con christians (that just happen to not like black people, trust me, i know what state you're in) and convince yourself that your family history is just a oopsie he he? You never once acknowledge slavery as a bad thing. You call yourselves the Brookgreen Gardens, when you're in fact a plantation. I really do hope that this message affects you in such a way that you completely rethink your whole lives. Remember, God is watching!
FACTS
Thanks for doing this! You cleared up a mystery at our new home in Murrells Inlet! Last April we saw beautiful flowers hanging from bushes in the woods around our home and could not figure out what they were. Well, we saw them in your presentation...they are native Mountain Azalea! Can't wait for this spring to see them again!
Love your video's, really entertaining! Please check out my attempts at hummingbird photography. ua-cam.com/video/L9VOyAcYM-c/v-deo.html
Enjoyed getting to know Angus - Happy Birthday🎂🦴
What is the shrub you are standing in front of at the beginning of the video? It’s lovely
Just because one is born into extreme wealth that does not guarantee virtue. Take a look at all our worthless politicians. Arthur Huntington from a time when men looked to be gentlemen and women ladies.
Soooooooo we’re romanticizing slavery ok gotcha 🤨🤦🏽♀️
That part 🧐
My thoughts exactly. These southern plantations profiting off of the horrors of slavery, and making it sound like some "Gone with the wind" fairytale. It's pathetic.
We have created, built and made everything in the United States
WHY DO YOU ROMATICIZE THE SLAVE OWNING HISTORY?????????????????????
This !!!! They always try to turn it into a damn love story 🤨
I guarantee you made this comment on a mobile device made in Asia using slave labor. Your home is likely filled with lithium batteries which require cobalt, a toxic substance being mined by African children in the Congo for less than a dollar a day. Spare me your first world virtue signaling. Those who live in glass houses…
Very thankful 🙏🏾🙏🏻🙏🏽🙏 for this💜💚💛
