Why People Hate Work
United States
Приєднався 13 жов 2024
How do we fix the workplace? It is estimated we spend 90,000 hours in our lifetimes at work; and only 15% of us are truly engaged. As opposed to hating our actual work, one of the core issues is the behavior at work. The good news is - we can change behavior. This is a place in which we examine the small tweaks, or large opportunities, that we all have to make work more fulfilling and enjoyable for all.
So You Want that Promotion
All of us have the right to gain more at work: a promotion that gives us an elevated title, more responsibility and more compensation. But, are we really ready for the additional responsibility of the team? And do we want it?

It's Not My Job to Be Nice
Переглядів 71914 годин тому
We have all heard this phrase, whether at work or not. Frankly, it's just an excuse to not be as good as we can be, or should be. It is not constructive and it doesn't build relationships. We can do better. @WhyPeopleHateWork #it'snotmyjobtobenice #professionalrelationships #howtomakeworkbetter #howtobebetteratwork #howtobuildpartnershipsatwork
Can We Be Our True Selves at Work?

One of the most key elements to being happy at work is the ability to be ourselves at work; and if we are true to ourselves at work, we gain the confidence of others for our authenticity. @whypeoplehatework #authenticat work #ourtrueselvesatwork #being genuine at work #individualismatwork
Does Anybody Really Care?

Do we waste too much time on things that really no one cares about? "Does anybody really care?" can be a liberating phrase that helps us re-set priorities on the things that are really important. @WhyPeopleHateWork #prioritiesatwork #whydopeoplereallycareabout #resettingpriorities #whypeoplehatework
Lessons We Can Learn from a Dog. Does Everything We Do Make Us Successful?

Most of us are reasonably successful, but that doesn't mean that everything we do makes us (or others) fulfilled or contributes to our success. Time for a little skills housecleaning? @WhyPeopleHateWork #whypeoplehatework #successatwork #thingstochangeatwork #noteverythingwedomakesussuccessful
Who Gets In Your Way at Work?

There is often one major barrier that stands in the way of progress and fulfillment at work - and that barrier can often be us. Great work is not about "me," it is about the team. Truly great teamwork, and great leadership, is a selfless act. @whypeoplehatework #selfatwork #selfishnessatwork #barriersatwork #teamwork #selflessnessatwork #barrierstoproductivity #obstaclestoteamwork #barrierstote...

Theme: So Why Exactly Do People Hate Work
Переглядів 18114 днів тому
Let's solve this - what is one the most core issues of why people hate work? @WhyPeopleHateWork
"It's not my job to be nice!" No, I suppose it isn't. But then I don't have to give you my best either, do I? I just need to do the bare minimum to keep my job until I leave you and go somewhere else. Abuse or neglect your equipment and tools, they won't work right and will likely fail you when you need them. It's the same with people. You can give them the minimum but that's likely what you'll get back from them.
You should explain how being nice and empathetic doesn't mean being a pushover
Really enjoyed this thought provoking topic had not considered it before this way but it is so very true. As I leave work daily I think about my work team if I made a difference in their day or put more stress on their life, it is a balance to have 2 things mesh together for the best day
Awesome subject it is so very true to building teams
Work…. People use what they know about you against you at a job. So nope. The less they know the less they can use against you. Maybe if I’ve been at a job for decades and have learned where and when and what to show about myself at a job. Otherwise I’m there to do a job for a pay check and it ends there. I’m not getting paid to be myself at work. I don’t care who says.
I'm in tech, so nope.... In fact jokes are discouraged because of various cultures/interpretation.
I used to teach a class in small group communication and problem solving. One of my goals was to help people learn that differences can be strengths -- for complex problems, the best solutions come from bringing a variety of different perspectives to bear. We are conditioned to seek out and be comfortable with people who are very much like us, and yet we become more creative and effective problem solvers when we work with people who are different from us. Learning to be comfortable with other people being their true selves has to be where it starts.
... I care that the plane has winglets. They improve fuel efficiency and are really cool. It is an odd thing to put in the app, though.
so true
You definitely work for HR.
People don't always quit bad jobs, they quit bad managers. It is unreasonable to expect 100% engagement 100% of the time. The current job market is also incredibly pathetic right now. Offering minimum wage for positions that require years of experience. Wages not keeping up with demand. AI being used in place of Hiring Managers was the worst decision of the decade. US Fertility is down because Gen Z can't afford children, homes, or cars. The key focus of the American Dream is unobtainable, so why should we love work? It provides a weak and unreliable safety net because management considers everyone either "expendable" or "replaceable". If companies no longer offer pensions or are not loyal to employees, then whats the point in company loyalty? The future is doom and gloom. The Self Unaliving Rate is higher today than it was in The Great Depression. The youth of today have a higher chance of ending their own life than they do making babies.
All of this. Add on inflexible hours, long commutes, mind-numbing repetitive tasks, an absolute lack of control over how you'll be treated, lack of benefits, the list goes on. And this guy's conclusion is "it's your attitude silly! You should love being a wageslave to a corporate ghoul who pays you pennies for the privilege of having your bathroom time monitored!"
I work in inventory for a pretty large company, currently - my workplace conflicts are infrequent and minor, the culture in my department is pretty good, me and my co-workers are never pressured into doing work faster than we can safely handle. It's still fairly demanding, however, and does not pay very well. I agree that many fun and significant moments happen at work, but for someone at my level, that feels more like a factor of the time spent at work - if you spend a good portion of your waking life in the warehouse, of course lots of things will happen at the warehouse. For me, work-life balance feels more like an appropriate phrase because everything (and I mean EVERYTHING) in my personal life is on hold while I'm at work. I have to be 'work-me' and come home exhausted and unable to learn, play, or engage in anything I consider fulfilling. I disagree that work-life balance is a misleading phrase as a result . Maybe for some people it can be different, but it's always been my experience that work is a means to an end - how I get the resources to live my life outside of work - rather than an essential part OF my life.
Just love this piece about work life balance! Well said! The expression is definitely misleading as it conveys a similar idea as a "zero-sum game" between work and personal life. Some people believe it means giving less to work and more to personal life (yes if you can afford it). The balance is to give 100% (hopefully :)) to whatever we are doing at the time - 100% to work when we are at work and 100% to personal life when we away from work 🙂
Total agree! Employers can't "pizza" their way out of employee low moral! Love the fact that the content is concise, to the point, and lighthearted 🙂.
Love this - I always had an intuition that pizza had multiple applications- you made it so much clearer for me 😊. Seriously though: real listening takes real work, and there’s no way around it and no substitute, not even my favourite pizza! I appreciate the constructive and light hearted perspective on such a core/care issue.
