10 Years Post Surgery?! Nothing but praise for Dr. Tom!
The next day after the surgery, is when you realize what pain means, it's excruciating, only with medication for pain you can make it through the day, the medicine only helps with 50% of the pain, make sure to take your medication before exercising, the bad pain last three days, if you exercise twice a day your knee will improve very fast, remember, no pain, no gain 😅
How painful is it when the patient comes out of anesthesia? And how long before the pain goes away?
I would be crying having this done and I’m 4 years out😊
Youer mob nomber
This is very encouraging! I'm an avid recreational skier who worked in management at a ski resort. I have skiid after a hip replacement, but have not done so after a knee repacement. At age 72, you give me hope of returning to the slopes. Thank you.
Please no bruh I don’t wanna undergo this torture
It look painful
Brilliant doc, I had mine done in Glasgow and it’s great driving after 10 days as it’s my left hip and my car is automatic, hardly any pain and hardly no bruising, what a difference, you guys a wonderful all the best Charlie 👍🙏🏴❤️
Do you have any darker skin examples? My surgery is tomorrow.
I thought 120 was the goal that's what my physical therapy told me
Mine told me the same today when I asked. (120). I’m 5 weeks post op. Started out at 80, and today was 103. She told me as long as they keep seeing progress, I can avoid a manipulation. I sure hope so.
I'm having this done in January 2025. When you say less soft tissue damage, what does that mean?
Is it safe to receive laser treatments on the scars to help minimize the appearance?
General anesthesia is very unnecessary for this process a nerve block would do the job perfectly fine and prevent unnecessary danger to the patient especially older patients.
Does that mean partial or total knee replacement then?
Not true, I have had it 2 times and no good results, followed by arthroscopic surgery months later, that’s 4 surgeries I have had in a year and now I’m disabled 😢 please talk it over with your loved ones before getting a knee replacement
Another Sharon from London, UK here and about to go in for my left hip replacement tomorrow (34/05/24). Found these videos very informative and helpful. Than you!😊
dr j hellman is doing my knee
I am physiotherapist My patient had knee flexion of about 15 degrees after working on it with the cooperation of patient 40 degress was achieved in almost 15 days but her doctor said to go for MUA... now her knee flexion is 60 degrees i don't get that why She achieved only 20 degress after this procedure
That must be super painful 😢
That’s what you call a soft catch 😮
Where is this
I am 49. Been dealing with bad knees since I was around 12 years old when I had my first dislocation. Since that I have dislocated both knees many times. 6 on the left and 8 times on the right. Knees are shot and right has had 5 surgeries and 3 surgeries on the left. Diagnosed with degenerative bone and joint disease in 2004. I had micro fractioning done on the right femur as it had a half dollar lesion or bone on bone. That created scar tissue that has gotten me by for years. But I now continue to tear the medial meniscus and prosterior horn tears constantly. My 5th surgery in July of 2023 to repair the meniscus tear and horn tear and clean out arthritis was not successful. I been in physical therapy since. Months and gaining no ground. Then right around Thanksgiving it began to get worse. Now I am in worse shape than before the surgery. I had gel one Injections for the last 8 years. They still work in my left knee but no longer work in my right. I actually think it flairs the right knee up and makes it worse. Now the pain in the right is almost unbearable. Crutches to get up in the morning. My left knee has began to bow my lower leg out. And as I move the left through the motion straight to bent my foot sits rotated out just straight but rotates outward as I sweep my leg through the cycle. It actually turns my foot almost 90 degrees outward when my knee is bent. But at least gel one took the edge off again. The right feels like it's on fire and when I hang and bend or with every step it feels like my knee cap is going to explode off the front of my knee. I am now back to losing sleep again as I cannot find a position where it won't wake me up burning and throbbing in pain. My arthroscopic surgeon won't do the replacement. I got a second Dr. That's supposed to be the best around in N. California and he's dragging his feet to do the replacement due to my age. I asked the 2nd visit what it would be like after the knee replacement. He said pain free. I got excited started working on losing a few pounds to help things out all around could not hurt. Then 3rd visit more new x-rays. He looks at those and I brought the images from inside the scope I had in July. He says we look for the spacing between. Of course I know all about this I been dealing with it since I was a kid. So in first sentence he says we look for the gap and where there is none that's bad. Looking at X-ray I can clearly see the bones are touching no gaps. Cartilage is gone. Then he points to it cause clearly I can see it's a problem. I had bone on bone on my first micro fractioning surgery in 2001. It's not change. He proceeds to tell me this right knee is not bad. He says the x-ray was probably taken at a slight angle making it look like there is no gap. I said no that's what my knee is. Been like this for well over 20 years! He says well he's just not sure it's bad enough for a replacement. I said why not? I am in absolute agony. I cannot do anything. I have to use a walker to go with my family on vacation to simply go to the beach or even the theme park. I have a full unloading brace and use the walker or crutches. How in the world is this not enough to warrant fixing it. He says well the pain may not go away if we do it to early. I said wait you told me the full knee would eliminate the pain completely. Now you say if we do it now at 49 years old the pain will not go away? What's going on here? Now I am scared to death to even do the knee replacement. People say it's going to be the worst pain ever and I will be down for months. I am losing my mind completely on what to do at this point. I love the outdoors and my hobby is metal detecting and flying model RC planes. 2 or 3 months inside and not able to walk scares me. I tuff is out as much as I can but even my hobbies I am unable to do. I can no longer think of kneeling down. I have to just bend over at hips. So I can do that really well now. I fall often catching that left foot that hangs out and low. Life is not good right now. My family rolls there eyes and does not want to hear anything about my knees. They have delt with it for years and no longer help. My spirit is down. Scared, angry, upset and uncertain of my future. I don't know what to do with my legs anymore as they just plain don't work well at all. Not sure about the recovery and pain to get through it. And to have doctor say arthritis looks mild and x-ray was taken slightly off I think that's why is looks bad. I start thinking am I just crazy? But then today I tried to go detecting. I maid it 30 minutes and that's flat ground and I barely made it back to the car. Now I am sitting here at 12:30 in the middle of the night unable to sleep with the pain I am in from today. It's rediculous.
I m in the same situation how are you now
I am 72 years old, skied since 11. I have had 2 TKAs, 2018/2019. I was back on skies after both operations. I race NASTAR, ski groomed steeps but stay away from the bumps and crud. If you are an experienced skier facing knee replacements don't worry. In time and with conditioning you'll be back on the hill.
Peter -- 1. Do you still need a brace? (If so, which one?) 2. I am a paid patroller -- how long was it before you could ski again? 3. How long before tennis? I used to play tennis all the time. 4. I also did lots of Long Trail hiking and would love to get back to it. Thanks
Mine is right on line with these pictures... surgery was on August 22nd.
wow, mine looks similar.. stitches just about dissolved at her 2 weeks... yay!! anterior incision is the best!!
You should see mine over 50 staples still sucks after 5 years.
1year later and my scar looks like a hole. I’m so upset about it.
I am 71 and want to ski again -deciding if to have 2 knee replacements
I had my right hip replaced in 2018- and my surgical leg is about a inch shorter- it’s really changed my quality of life and my left hip is starting to bother me. Is there any I can do without having another surgery, my wife and I are raising 4 grandchildren and if the good Lord is willing I have to work 10-15 more years. I would appreciate any advice/ wisdom 🙏
I wanted to actually hear the breaking of the scar tissue, but no volume to be found on this.
I just washed this for the first time and I heard it 😮 I'm 3 weeks after total knee replacement and I'm having a hard time bending my knee. I see my surgeon for the first time in 2 days. I'm just googling everything and it's freaking me out.
I am at this moment, with 5 weeks post op TKR surgery, going through physical therapy since this past Friday. I did have some home PT therapy started with 4 sessions before the PT company found out that my insurance doesn’t cover this (they do, however, cover physical therapy). So I just completed 2 PT sessions and both have had me in excruciating pain from my PT flexing my knee back to try & get 90 degrees bend in the knee. The most likely candidate is scar tissue haven formed in the first 4 weeks since surgery. I am right now trying to get my physician to arrange a MUA for me before doing any further PT. I don’t know if I can take any further pain when having my knee bent to 90 degrees +. I am presently due to see my physician next week for my 6 week post op exam. He wasn’t liking what he saw at my 4 week exam, where he did mention our maybe having to go to doing a MUA. I still have one PT still scheduled for tomorrow (yesterday was my second session), and I’m absolutely NOT looking forward to that session, let alone two more sessions come next week before my physician sees me. When my PT did get my knee at close to 90, I felt (or heard) what I perceived to be the scar tissue tearing as he tried to get to 90 degrees. I screamed, I cussed, and I even found myself trying to crawl up the table to relieve my pain as my PT was holding my lower leg at his best flex position. I am right now awaiting a call back from my physician to discuss the possibility/probability of us getting the MUA done. I REALLY do NOT want to experience that over the top pain while my PT is trying to get 90 degrees flex.
I know the feeling, the pain in unbearable when the bend your knee. It's not happening to them so they don't care.
@@bengalcat5608, I just had a MUA procedure on my knee and the surgeon doctor showed me a pic he took in the OR of my knee at 135 degrees. I go to my PT session in about an hour from now. We’ll see if my PT can gat that bend out of my knee then.
I'm praying for you, sir I'm 3 weeks & 4 days PO. At my doctor's visit today, he informed me I would be having an MUA next week. I'm at 60° flexion only😢
@@teresaelmore3482 , hang in there! My ROM is improving, slowly but getting better. I’m not fighting my physical therapist’s getting more flex and I’ve actually gotten to pedaling full rotations on the stationary bike. At 2 months PO I am starting to have more confidence in my getting back to normal. And thank you for the prayers!
@RichAnthony77 Amen 🎉 Our journey is so similar, sir. I am 5 weeks PO. I have my MUA next Wednesday, and I can't wait. I'm ready to see significant progress and get some pain relief.😢 I am progressing slowly but doing better. I'm not able to do full circle on the stationary bike. However, I definitely push myself as far as my knee will allow me too.😂 I am keeping you lifted in prayers. We will both be ready for activities for spring/summer.❤
My mom got knee surgery 5+ years ago and her scar is pink. She doesnt have any issues with her knee. The scarring just didn't lighten.
😢😢😭
I had both ACLs cut out and replaced with grafts. I don't have arthritis yet however would it be better to get a partial early when arthritis starts coming vs a full. I really don't want to deal with a full and will get arthritis at 30 years old at minimum. I can't have general anesthesia but I do well with regional and no sedation. I had my left done fully awake.
How is your life now after 1 year is any pain or other problems??
I am 2 weeks and 1 day after surgery... very little soreness around incision.. I have been driving for a week today. I had anterior incision.
Hi Doctor, could you please advice on which implant is better for younger adults? Corail or Summit?
Summit will be easier to remove if you need revision in the future with less bone loss Corail is difficult to to remove
At almost 3 years post op, and still at only 85 degrees of flexion, is it too late for an MUA. I am in Canada and my surgeon refused to do one, even though I asked him to from 6 weeks post op!! Many thanks
Why did he refuse?
It was middle of covid? And he just kept saying “push through the pain”. !!!! It was unbearable.
I’m glad you showed me. My surgery is in the morning
Good luck with your surgery and recovery!
This is inspiring as hell! unfortunately I know I'll be on robo knees in the next 10 years. As I was recently told by an orthopedic surgeon "I've replaced better knees than yours".I am a 33 year old lifelong skier who suffered a severe patella break in my teens, multiple questionable surgeries to repair it have left me with a bone on bone arthritic mess of a left knee. I know I will keep skiing as long as I can move!
When the knee pain makes you want to quit skiing, come see me. Ski on until then! I’m on same plan myself- Holding out til it threatens to take it away.
Stryker knee?
I do use Stryker Mako Robotic-Arm assist with the Triathlon total knee.
I have had a MUA 30 days after T.K.R back in February, I’m still the same way. I have about 45 degrees bending, Dr. Said it’s not good, he had me going to therapy knowing that wasn’t working. I have spent hundreds of dollars renting machines/buying products to help me work the leg out on the days I am home, still nothing is working. I just got tired of hearing the same thing so I made another appointment with a different Surgeon.
@300Grizzly_Srt Hi I came across your comment. How's your TKR going lately. I'm going through the same thing. I had a TKR back in Sept 23, therapy, MUA in Jan 24, therapy/CPM machine. I also spent money and I'm the same dealing with a lot of stiffness. Did you go to a different surgeon? How did it go?
👋🏽 sorry for the late response, yes I ended up going with a different surgeon who recommended me to see a sports medicine orthopedic surgeon, who has did an arthroscopic procedure which I must, it was a waste of time, it didn’t work, I’m just one of the percentage of patients who produce lots of scar tissue, that is the reason why I cannot bend the knee. It’s killing me, my other leg and hip is hurting as well…. I’m going to travel soon to Houston soon to sit down with another surgeon, hopefully he’ll tell me some good news
@@300Grizzly_Srtwas the MUA doesnt work ?
@@snorlax9258 nope didn’t work for me at all, after 2 weeks I was back to normal, stiffness with no mobility and range of motion. I am getting a knee revision on the 19th of feb
Hola it’s been told to me that I cannot have the luxury of waiting for this to be done. The last intervention I had was disastrous which left my leg disfigured and swollen. Too bad there’s not a series showing botched knee n hip surgeries. Am 64 and weighing 200 is not going to get any better. I live in plantation Broward county Florida if you have anyone to recommend please do so. Ty😢❤ 2:32
Where’s my comments? 😮
I have a question, can more inflammation/swelling come after MUA and hence the patient goes back to square 1
After an MUA, we see immediate improvement in mobility, but this is usually accompanied by feelings of soreness and fatigue. The body has essentially undergone an intense exercise session. With proper recovery and therapy the results have shown to give lasting benefit.
@@hipsandkneesbydr.tomcalton7022, I SO needed to read this doctor’s reply here!!!
Do you recommend scar massages right after a surgery? Gentle of course
Most healing is going to occur with or without. I have patients that do massage their scar and feel like it made a difference in the hardness and raised appearance. Regardless, gentle massage after initial healing won’t hurt it.
When can we start the messaging after TKR?
I am 11 weeks out of knee surgery and I have poor range of motion can I get this done 🤔
Yes. Where are you located?
Sweet
I keep hearing 60% of Manipulations don’t work!!! I am a diabetic type 2 is that the reason is slow progress!! I am at 115degrees walking stiff.
Inspiring!
Isn’t she!? We can all hope to be doing as well at 7 weeks!
Hello doctor. My mom suffered a tibial plateau fracture 6 weeks back and a surgery was done. 3 weeks back she started PT. She can bend knee 90 degrees sitting in chair and 75 degrees through heel slides while laying down. The quads really feel tight with some lumps. Would you suggest MUA?
I’d have to examine to make a proper recommendation. Where are you located?
