Combatting blackgrass: Do we need a different approach?
Переглядів 13028 днів тому
Blackgrass populations can increase 10 times annually, with some research indicating that even larger growth is possible. This means farmers face the challenge of having to control over 95% of blackgrass each year to prevent a build-up. Using herbicides alone to combat blackgrass is having increasingly limited effect due to its ability to build resistance. So, do we need a different approach? I...

Real 'conventional' farming is as Dr. Carver said, put the black back in the soil and farmers will again be wealthy as they were in generations past. Ask how God does it, not how liberals demanded it be done in the 30s. One grandfather was threatened with arrest in the early 40s by FDR's ag department for refusing to use chemicals. He laughed at them and told them to do it. then they could watch every farmer vote against FDR. Grampa was bloka, headman, in the Longhouse of the Bear, and most all of us in Appalachia are metis and respected that.
Thanks for sharing, great to hear some perspective from other parts of the world 👍
The information we really need up front is stocking density, how often they move, and rest period duration. Could that be posted in show notes?
You wanna rely on fertilizer from Russia, you go ahead. Science is Science. Why do you think native plants grow 10ft tall, survive droughts, grazing, etc. even in so called poor soils. You’d the 1930s would be enough to give society a pause. Work the piss out your ground, with diesel at &4 bucks a gallon-omg. We here to help.
What would the impact to climate change if countries with deserts used regenerative agriculture to restore soils in deserts, creating productive soil. What business plan would make it a viable investment.
Deserts are a ecosystem on their own. They should not be viewed as opportunity to reverse climate change. In such ecosystems, biodiversity loss will increase because of introducing changes because many species have evolved for those systems.
Great way to regreen the desert and feed the people while affording to survive.
Beautiful cattle!
Moringa oleifera. It is a very fast growing tree that is drought tolerante. It's loaded with protein and has the most complete plant based amino acid profile. It also has the most growth hormone zeatin of all plant species. Moringa can be used to feed animals, plants, and people with it's leaves, drumsticks, seeds, flowers, and roots. It can be grown as microgreens, in rows orchard style, or a more dense hedges style.
We are doing this management. Diverse plants and rotational grazing. I can see where it’s going. It’s staring to go down the road of more rules. 6,3,4.. 9… certification, 27. Annual certification updates and required classes … If not put then just leave info out, let producers choose. If they choose traditional farming they pay the cost of depleting soil and more fertilizers.
It’s ironic that he has educated so many people around the world who have changed their agricultural practices but has not convinced his neighbors to do the same. What’s up with that? Is it ego? They don’t want him to be right? It’s just odd to me
Take this to COP and demand action this year We need a global carbon tax and we need it now. The time for talk, BLA BLA BLA is over The planet is at a tipping point, It can't wait, Time to stand up and make a legend of yourself. Vote as one and please pass this bill Worldwide carbon tax 20 % carbon tariff should apply to all greenhouse gas polluters Eg 20 % on a barrel of oil Eg 20 % on a Tn of coal Eg 20 % on a kg of meat Eg 20 % on, a Tn cement produced, Eg 20 % on a Tn Steel produced. Etc. Etc. ETC Carbon tax worldwide Paid to a central carbon fund UNGCF. Administered and regulated by the United Nations Global Carbon Fund. UNGCF fund A 20 %of total sales of greenhouse gas Emitteing, polluters should pay for the mess Creating a yearly fund of 2 trillion dollars 40 GT @ 50$ per tn = 2 trillion per year That is 10 billion per year For 195 countries and territories, SO they can have any chance of reaching their net zero targets and fifty billion for the UNGCF, this will fund all the UN's global, humanitarian projects I am shaw you will all agree, that they deserve this fund and they do a great job for all the planet's occupants 2 trillion per year For 50 years That's 100 trillion dollars to repair climate change. That is less than 2% of the global yearly gross GDP, So we can build and create utility infrastructure for hundreds of years.I can't make it any simpler than that, please Global ambassadors help your people The countries can utilize their funds to build the infrastructure required for a clean green future carbon capture and storage facilities, organic carbon sinks Research and development into CO2 reduction technology Atmospheric reduction strategy ocean reduction strategies The polluters must pay the free ride must end, and everyone should receive, This is a global problem and requires a global solution, all working together as one. Absolutely. T
Absolutely love most of what Blain had to say. His 6th slide on the Rhizospere is brilliant. I have some questions for him. 1. It puzzles me why he would suggest bacteria came first. What did they eat? 2. There was no mention about reduced stoma on plants in high CO2 environments and therefore reduced water consumption in the plant. Was that just a time thing? 3. In his last slide showing the difference between a degraded and a healthy soil, it says silt, sand and clay are 74%. and in the healthy soil it's 30%. Obviously these have not decreased so does that mean the actual soil level increases because there is now more air water and SOM. Is this a measurable height difference?
Regarding point one. Checkout deep sea thermal vents and cold seam seeps, chemosynthesis, to me it resembles the rhizophere, where the liquid carbon pathway promotes a hive of life around the root mass via photosynthesis. Point 3. Yes, plus all the soil microbiology, plant roots, carbon, and increased h2o etc
Thank you.
Speaking gigs are a good form of income
How are you growing carrots or do you not grow them. I like this regenerative agriculture but i can't have cattle. How do you do it for the small gardner just for the family? I am going to do it but wondering how to do it with out a tractor and if i do get a tractor do they have a drill for small gardner??
Start researching notill gardening. We started 2 seasons ago and love this method. We use old flax straw for our mulch. Start small and learn as you go by practicing the principles that Gabe focused on. The most important process in my opinion is learning about soil aggregation and implementing those strategies for proper soil function to grow your nutrient dence vegetables that actually taste like they should. Good luck!
Keel up the good work Gabe. I watch everyone of your videos I can find
Yes, all the elements are there, except for phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur... to name a few that one can't get from the air. So unless you are planning to only plant crop that delivers none of these to your buyers, then you are out of luck. Hint: humans can't live of hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and carbon alone. We happen to need all of those non-regenerative elements in our food, which means that some farms, somewhere, have to put them into the soil using mineral resources. That's just basic chemistry.
@veziqiniso4425 As a dairy farmer........ we here in the USA have the best and highest quality food in the world ! It has nothing to do with " regenerative " " organic " or the like. As a former Peace Corps volunteer to Liberia Africa. I ate many foods there....most of which was wild bush animals/meat. None of this was inspected. You took it home ......cooked it and ate it ( if you could ) One time I bought a ground hog which was hanging out for sale a bit too long. It was blown up.....from being in the sun too long. Got it home and magots fell out of it. I still cooked it.........tried to eat it.....but vomited. I no longer eat ground hog meat. You could buy monkey meat.....or any other meat at the market. Perfectly healthy. None was ever inspected...but all was good quality meat ! Also take for example.... myself........milking cows...... a milker can fall / drop off of a cow....fall in the manure / pee. Its instantly sucked into the pipeline. Its blended into the tank of milk..and mixed with any other milk along the way. Is this healthy food ? Im betting nearly every dairy farmer has this happen every day. Nothing much to prevent it. Still.....here in the USA....we have the best quality food you can buy ! "Regenerative" is just a way to make money off of people whom fall for it. Do these so called farmers make their money off the land or....from other people / farmers ? For sure they dont stay home and make money off the land !
You need to research regerative agri a bit more to get the point .
The basic point is...its all about money. Or you would not have these people on UA-cam asking for subscribers / likes etc. If they were really serious they would openly provide info with out the need for profit. PROFIT thats what its all about . And it has nothing much to do with farming / agriculture. An example .....if anyone asked me for info....or advise. Its 100% free. Ive lived it.....farmed it and have done so for 45 years. ..and have no desire or need for any profits ! Farming....be it whatever is about making a profit on the job work " farming " Not running the roads... charging money to make money !
You obviously know nothing of Gabe or his successes as a farmer/rancher....or what he is doing for the world or his motivations. BTW, his son has now taken over his very successful farm/ranch operation & continues to successfully expand. Gabe never ask for "likes" or "subscribes" to anything...ever. He teaches people to "fish"...if they want to learn. He secretly helps many for FREE. He testifies to congress at his own expense trying to help make a difference for both the environment (world) AND farmers success. I went to a Soil Health Academy where Gabe participated, partially on scholarship...I also went to one of Greg Judy's conferences just before that. I honestly learned much from BOTH but there were stark differences. That said, I am appreciative to what GJ has done & taught...he is being compensated for it. My Soil Health Academy was next level... three levels! ALL participating consultants were very approachable & helpful there...and after, not just if you owned 1000's of acres etc. (I only have 80 acres & was treated the same. ) Not one person there was being sold anything...just teaching & truly mentored. They actually gave so much away for free both then & after. Sadly at GJ's...I felt most of the time I was either being sold something (overpriced) or a constant advertisement & pitched. (For which GJ gets a piece of.) Also much less approachable. I would/ will attend another SHA 100% at my own cost but will not GJ's again. On final note, I strongly advise you to watch "Kiss the Ground" & it's sequel "Common Ground" before you speak much more to what you do not know.
@@CCRep123 Well.....Im 100% on board with you ! I have no issues what whats being presented here. But these things are not and should not be taught. They are " learned " from experience. Every farm experience is different. As a dairy farmer myself.. as stated.....Ive been doing these things for over 40 some years. Never needed someone to " teach " me ! Its all about the desire to learn ! Walk out the door....smell the air. Your so right about " Mr Glyphosate " ( Greg Judy ) For him its all about the money ! Try to leave a comment that he disagrees with .... he blocks those people ! Found a way to locate/identify those that are or have been blocked. Well over 1000 this year. I would have to ask.....why ? Ask Mr Glyphosate how many cows/ calves hes lost in a year because of calving issue. Your doomed to be blocked ! Same with questions around pink eye and foot problems in the cows. Hes never address how often his fences get taken out with deer. Everything with Mr Glyphosate is heavenly ! Or......you will go broke ! Has Mr Glyphosate ever done any experiments showing results in using fertilizers ? NONE ! Id not relating to 10 or 20 acres... Im relating to a few square feet. He wont even talk about it. Has Mr Gabe ever shown or done experiments relating to fertilizers ? Sorry......but Im very familiar with both and others too... in regards to the so called " regen " world. I just wont agree with many areas that others fall face first over. There are logical questions to be asked and expect an answer too. True....Mr. Glyphosate has multiple. ( as he calls them ) lines of income ( I guess so he dont go broke ?) Yah might get tired of naming them all !!!! Speeches ... fencing equipment.... selling " online " cattle ( for others / and his own ) He never mentions the prices. Only few. Follow whom you wish. I rather learn by doing ! And Im still not broke !!!!! Milked 40 cows on a 160 acre farm 110 tillable acres. Total equipment costs...as of today ....under 40,000 dollars including my S-10 Pickup. Hay equipment......planting equipment.. corn harvest equipment ( two row New Idea picker ) . Farmers choose to go broke ! They run the roads following others rather then doing their work !
@@CCRep123 I think he is a winder upper
@understandingag, Gabe; love your message and approach & integrity. Just a suggestion- somehow the 'soil is sand, silt & clay' no longer fits with your and our message about soil: about a dynamic living system with billions of living organisms that we're regenerating through working in synchrony with nature by the management principles and practices adaptively applied to the land. Which stimulate ecosystem functioning and productivity. Thanks guys.

all soil is based in silt, sand, and clay (find me one that isn't). So the principles of building organic matter, promoting biology in the soil, and keeping it covered with (preferably) a photosynthesizing plant apply everywhere. The exact way you go about that changes slightly based on your climate and soil base (just as the exact mix of diverse biology and plants change), but not so drastically that you can't apply the concepts. They say that "soil is soil" because there's a lot of farmers and academics who keep claiming their approach to agriculture can, effectively, "only work on Brown Ranch". If you follow the principles, you can achieve equal or better results than they have been in ND (especially if you have a longer growing season and more rainfall).
@wildrangeringreen thanks I think we're largely on the same page. In many parts of the world the dominant view of soil for the past 60 years has been simply of a physical substrate that you loosen up with tillage and apply inputs like fertilizer, seed and ag-chems to in order to produce a crop. That's what many ag- colleges and the ag-business sector have propagated. Allen and Gabe have played a role in shifting that for many producers
I am not a farmer or anyone with credentials worth speaking about. I worked in the construction and operations industries before my retiring. I find it interesting that we are always seeking to develop and implement what was called innovative technologies. Often these were falsely advertised because the technology existed for decades in another field or application. It’s the presentation that sells. Bull Shit baffling brains so to speak. We love what sounds good! We love it so much that we often don’t require proof. Interesting Regenerative farming to me is basically doing what if left alone nature has done forever. Of course nature has been so altered that we can only attempt to mimic it these days. I really enjoy the approach and only wish I was younger and able to get more personally involved. I do enjoy these talks.
Water is not free
Rainwater....FALLS EVERYWHERE. Industrial Farming "CATCHES" almost none of that water. Regenerative "Biological Farming" Practices... captures 20 times more rainwater than DEAD SOIL "Chemical Farming". Building Aquifers instead of Depleting them. Everywhere that there is an Aquifer.... Nature captured more Rainwater THAN YOU ARE DOING NOW...or there would be no Aquifer.
You cant farm......when you run the roads ! Same with Mr.Glyphosate ( Greg Judy ) He calls it profitable when hes not even a farmer ! Mr. Glyphosate needs multiple lines of income to even exist !
@@Jj-gi2uv Im well aware....... thats why I commented here. These are not farmers. They operate only for profit......and not from farming ! UA-cam is more of an income for them then farm life !
That maybe true of GJ...NOT of Gabe. He speaks from dearly paid for experience. Do better research concerning ANYONE involved with Understanding Ag or Soil Health Academies. They are involved for the right reasons, bring a wealth of knowledge & experience & ask little in return. They are mentors... not hucksters.
Is that Hexham race course in the background?
Yay Gabe !
😊
We feed the world by creating thousands of small town regenerative farmers through educating the next generation.
Basic common sense.
Farmers here in the USA.....feed people........with dirt cheap food prices ! One basic example is the price of " chicken " You cant produce a chicken for the price you can buy it in town ! Same with potatoes ! People in the USA complain about high food prices. Get a life !!!
@jerrylansbury9558 yes, however unless done regeneratively, at a great cost to taxpayers & the fiscus (subsidies etc), the environment & human well-being. But I get your point about access to low-cost food, although.. if it's not healthy, look at US health costs & expenditure. 'Hidden costs'
