Great guy and a great educator! As an 18 year old sax player I played for Sonny in his big band on several occasions. He encouraged me and many others to play music at a high level. Once while playing in a small group in New Haven (I was about 20) he happened to come by and during a break he handed me a 20 dollar bill...I thought wow!!! This guy really cares! Thank you for the great memories! Al Wheaton (University of Bridgeport Alumnus)

Thank you Sonny, my teacher and mentor, in my beginning years as a trombonist and musician. I played in your first Big Band and loved every minute of it. You were, my Idle and friend. Every time I pickup my trombone I'll remember you and our time together. Your music and abilities as a teacher and a trombonist were amazing. I just listened to, "Over The Rainbow". just an amazing recording. Thank you for so much!!! Dominick Galati

I was sixteen years old (in 1975) when I was amazed by Sonny Costanzo’s magnificent jazz trombone. This was at a Holiday Inn near New Haven and his guest artist that night was the legendary Jimmy Heath. (I think I saw him play with Chris Woods also). It was the first time ever that I had had the chance to hear a jazz trombonist live. I was so amazed by his trombone playing that I still remember that he played Quiet Night of Quiet Stars (Corcovado), A Night in Tunisia, and On Green Dolphin Street. I was fascinated by his playing. I learned about Sonny thanks to the gifted trumpeter Kenny Gould. I hope Kenny is alive and well. If any of you knows Kenny, please give him my regards. Warm regards from Puerto Rico, Luis Quinones

But recall the lyrics -- they are that sentimental.

Anyone know when this was recorded? Sonny gave me my first chance to play jazz in a good band. We went to the New York World's Fair in 1965. I played the jazz tenor seat. Had a blast but never appreciated what he could do for me. Youth is wasted on the young.

Truly the greatest trombone player of all time - he never really got his "due" nor the recognition he deserved. He played with such heart, power and passion.Thank you for your eternal gift of music, Dad.

Sonny Costanzo was an amazing musician and a fantastic guy! What a sound! I can never repay him for the musical experiences he engineered for us. We played with Gerry Mulligan, Clark Terry and he took us to Montroux! God bless you and Rest in Peace Sonny. We will play together again, some day. Ray Spaziani

@@larrywebb2851 Sonny was a great man with much leadership, kindness and high expectations of his students. I was fortunate to have known him at Quinnipiac. My last recollection of him was visiting this great man as he battled cancer at Yale . Blessings to his family. Abdul

Hi. In high school I played at the Quinnipiac festival and studied with Sonny at HCC, did many gigs through his agency and with him. He was an amazing musician; he used to read the alto parts upside-down from the front of the band during rehearsals! He was a great guy and I often think of him with fond memories. Take care Carla.
