The Most Important Lesson for Farmers: God Responds, Not Reacts
Переглядів 3234 години тому
In this episode, I dive into the difference between reacting and responding. Often, when we react, it’s out of pure emotion-something triggers us, and we fire back without thinking, often leading to regrets and outcomes we don’t want. But God doesn’t react; He responds. Today, I’m breaking down how this principle applies in business, relationships, and life in general. By creating space and cho...

Land is a hedge against inflation. It always goes up because more dollars are being created. So you can barrow dollars today and pay off with pennies later!

Farms have gotten two big. Little Johnny wants to farm with dad and grandpa so more land bought or rented. Expensive newer equipment has to be bought because you can't have a breakdown with so much land to farm. Got to have a new pickup and nice home too. We no-till farm with old used equipment and fix everything ourselves. We always make a profit and sleep well at night.

She hooked me up with a late-stage fund that got me in on private shares of some hot companies before they hit the market or blew up. Those investments totally paid off when the companies went public and their stocks shot up. Now, I’m stoked because I’m heading into retirement with almost a million bucks in my portfolio.

I left a bank because they hired a new ag lender who did not understand agriculture. I knew that if things got tough, they would freak and not be reliable to moving ahead. Choose your finance institution by their knowledge, not by the lowest interest rate. Also, always cultivate two institutions and keep your finances services divided. More complicated, but more stable in the long run---and you want stability and reliability.

I realize your channel exists to promote your business, and I wouldn’t presume to tell you how to do it, but dividing partners into roles that no longer exist, if they ever did, doesn’t seem helpful. It is not a wife’s job to be her husband’s mommy, which is what you’re describing. I don’t know a single farmer’s wife who has her pretty little head in the clouds unaware of what’s happening on the farm or at the bank because she has a husband to protect her from reality. I do know many women of varying religious and socioeconomic backgrounds who are working and worrying shoulder to shoulder with their husbands or, like me, are farming and stressing over the family farm themselves. Nearly 50% of ag businesses have female producers. 1.2 Million women working 407 million acres generating $222 Billion in sales or 41% of US ag sales and 46% of US farmland.(USDA 2022 Stats) Mental health is an issue for all farm family members no matter their age, gender or role in the business.

I farmed and bought land at the highs in the late 70’s. I farmed through the 80’s ( just barely). I paid over 18% interest. Luckily I didn’t get my father to sign on anything and made it past and started buying land for 10% value at 10-12 % interest. Today the government has wrecked our dollar and can’t afford the trillions of dollars debt they have and that same govt controls the interest rate which will be low for many many years and the dollar saved today won’t buy anything in the near future. If you have land you have stability but not without risk. Every metropolitan area has 3days food on hand. If dollar collapse there will be cannibalism in 13 days.

"Farmer greed" was said how many times in this video? To be clear, this is a problem with larger operations, not the small family farm; I still the same old 70's - 90's tractors and 90's to 2000's combines in the field, basically same for sprayers and implements... like for goodness sake, the only time the small family farm can even afford new equipment is during the good years; it's not a "greed" problem but one of basic survival and means to continue on. Gotchya, there's anecdote of Joe Shmoe doing this and that, but I don't believe it's endemic to small family farms. You provide some valid points and indeed I believe the average farmer needs to knowledge and wise up on finances, business smarts (farmer marketing, operational efficiency, etc.), but the early 2020's was a unique time. Who honestly expected prices to remain high long-term when we clearly had an ongoing trade war with China and Brazil continued to drive record export levels on Corn and Soybeans!? Just feels like another sensational, dramatic, and unrealistic UA-cam video.

Banks and Farm Credit Institutions have fallen back into the game of collateral lending. This was the same environment that gave us the 1980's crisis. Its especially evident with young loan officers and staff that have never seen a crisis. When the sales manager is pushing growth without proper credit administration and risk management you are headed for trouble.

Don’t ever feel bad for the bank if they get it broken off in them. They are part of the problem in virtually every case of a farm failing, and they are the main contributor to run away overhead. If the banks pulled back on the reins, you would see common sense, stable pricing. Their sheer greed is a major part of the problem. The old timer who helped me get started had some thriving businesses outside of farming, he was young, and smart as a whip. They kept throwing money at him, even when he told him it wasn’t working. Finally, he was bailing it out with his own money, and he pulled the rug out from under it all. Well, they let him move in to 1st in line of the farms creditors, so he’d bail it out yet again. When he pulled the rug out the next year, and it was all auctioned off, he bought it back for $400/acre. The dollar cost average price paid was $2500. He never lost a nights sleep over it. Gotta love the 80’s and farming.

Things are constantly evolving, every operation is a dynamic, unique situation. I farmed with 25 yr old equipment. It was my advantage. Until that no longer worked. Even a brand new piece of equipment would be completely ruined after 5 years of us pounding on it. We now lease. We farmed without debt. Another secret weapon. This year we drew on our line of credit while still in the rate lock period, and made 2 points on short term treasuries. Debt became an income source. We’re selling organic corn for less $ than the conventional crops were bringing last year. There just isn’t a text book for this, I’m reminded of how grateful I am to not have an ag degree. My aerospace background has in many ways been a bigger benefit. I can modify and tweak a planter pretty well. Just the decades of aviation experience has been more useful than an ag degree. It trains the brain to stay dynamic, constantly scrolling for best options, staying ahead of it. I’ve never played a farm simulation game. But in aviation, simulator time is crucial. We need to utilize the t bytes of data that is being gathered around the ag scene, and war game in order to learn. I’m not the smartest guy, and let me tell ya, figuratively speaking, the tail could rip off this metaphorical machine at any time, but darn it, I’m flying it, or trying to, all the way to the ground. That’s instinct developed through experience.

Debt is the #1 killer of farmers. The existing big ag model is broken but with the coming volatility and sovereign debt crisis the industry will deleverage and food prices will go up relatively. Liquidate to your sleeping point and understand that farming (owner/operator) is one of the most difficult careers and businesses in the world. One needs to have a value mindset, marketing skills, a strong balance sheet and diversified operation to weather the storms.

The thing is, I could take on quite a few acres, and am always looking for help. I picked up a few fields from some decent sized operations this year. It made more sense to shed the most inconvenient ground to farm, instead of borrowing money at 9%. It was tough to get the banks to clear the ground to sell. My guys live better than I do.
