Machining and mechanical + a few other interests. Very much a work in progress.
Metal Shaper Action Mit-A-Mit
Here I use the shaper to start the process of turning 1.5" round bar into a piece of 1.0" x 0.5" flat bar.

You can get the job done with minimal or no cost with what you have lying around your workshop.
Mit-A-Mit metal shaper The Shaper is Back

Australian made metal shaper from between 1930 -1940 ?. Re surfacing a section of railway line. This is the first job since getting it back together. Still needs tuning up.
ATC 90 Brake Drum Removal

The brake drum was rusted onto the axle splines and no amount of hammering with the biggest hammer would move it. I hope this method helps anyone else who is experiencing the same problem with their Honda ATC 90 or similar.
Log Splitter powered by old engine

Old engine powered log splitter. Don't remember the make but guess the engine age to be about 1935 or so. Works great and would love one for the shed.
As a machinist , your setup is simple and cost effective, and the result is as good as a professional setup....Well done.
When I first started watching, I could not see everything. I thought someone had designed something for a conventional lathe ......................................... .
Send me this contraption I'm about to
How awesome. I sure miss my old Ammco shaper. FYI... it appears the timing for advancing the table is off. It's a very easy fix on this machine.
Niemals im Leben wird das etwas Präzises, Zwei Holzrippen mit Schraubzwingen befestigt. Das ist ein Sketch aus "Verstehen sie Spaß"
Says war finish… so 1941?-45? Ishhh
Traveling head shapers that size are pretty rare. Glad to see it still making chips.
No way. You’d get a precise hole with wooden brgs 😳
May not be precise , adequate for the need apparently . Karl : "Licensed to kill gophers by the government of the United Nations. A man, free to kill gophers at will. To kill, you must know your enemy, and in this case my enemy is a varmint. And a varmint will never quit -- ever.Jul 25, 2015
Frickin brilliant that is!
cant see how you attained precise alignment?

Is the clapper box raised automatically or it gets pushes up by the work when backing up
Suddenly i fell in live with a shaper so that makes milling machine my ex right (joking they bothe have their pros and cons)
A company called Perfecto used to make an identical one in the UK.
I want one!
Awesome man, fantastic way to go about it. Was about to start pricing together my own setup that would have cost $100s compared to this. Your way will only cost me the bar and cutting heads.
Hermoso

Thank you! Finally, a well done video that shows what a shaper is, and does, with out 20 mins of yakking while moving the camera around constantly. I was getting motion sick watching some of the others, lol
I'm watching it advance the table during the cutting stroke which seems oddly contrary to every other shaper I've ever worked on. You end up with curved cutting lines, albeit only a slight anomaly, an anomaly nonetheless.
That's a first for me to see a moving headstock shaper. Can only imagine how sensitive the old girl is to exacting gib adjustments.
genius..
Similar to my perfecto shaper 🙂
I have a Perfecto too. Not impressed by the table.
@Jack Alltrade ahh,the later perfectos had better tables ,I do however put a bottle jack underneath to add support
@@darynradcliffe2909 The other problem is that the table does not tally with the stroke of the ram. I bought mine second hand with a welded steel spacer box to throw the table further from the bed but accessing the bolts is as far from ergonomic as could possibly be. A dreadful piece of design by Perfecto.
What do you use yours for?
@@532bluepeter1 I restore antique clocks ,so work related to that ...
Hi, thank you for sharing, but it wasn’t easy for me to visualize how you attached the cutting tool to the bar. Any chance you can you pictures of that? Thanks again, and nice work!
when you say kit a mint is it the same mob that made the eggbeater dills and braces????
This sapper amazing I Am sapper worker should me job hear my phone no 8279716644
So much easier than fly cutting the thing lol.
Do they have CNC versions of these?
Nope because they're obsolete due to CNC lmao.
but but...imagine all the possibilities!
You could CNC it & I saw bigger ones with a DRO on them. Through they are mostly used for either hobby use or repair shop or very specific operation.
Built during WW2, the "War Finish" plaque denotes that it was produced using certain materials only where necessary, such as brass, and that finishes not affecting machine operation were left in a rough state to save labor.

Muy bien..☺☺☺🤗🤗🤗
Lucky !!! Love those ,,the machine to build more machines 😘
EXCELLENT WORK - ALSO GOOD TO SEE THE SAFETY THONGS IN USE LOL
Safety first in my shed
для чего эти пазы ??????
A very interesting machine. First time I've seen a shaper of this design. Thanks for sharing
cool
Станок работает красиво.
Does it have a quick return stroke? Alse were they ever exported to England?

No quick return and not sure about export, I have found very little if any information on this machine.
There is something new under the sun! The first thought is to look at a 10x24 lathe as a organ donor. Now to get the sketchbook for a feasibility study. It does run very nicely. Fine job!
Nice bit of improvising!
Is the drum steel or cast iron ?
nice smoke
Thanks!
Jolly good.Thanks for sharing.
Lovely job. Looks like you've done quite a bit of work on the old shaper. Thanskfor the upload. Mat
lovely old shaper running nice and smooth - did you get the feed direction sorted ? On my shaper, the offset for the linkage to the ratchet pawl is handed - so it goes one side of the centre for one direction and to reverse direction to swap the side & reverse the ratchet pawl. As the chap below states - feed on the back return stroke - it reduces the load on the feed screw & nut. Ive added your video to my playlist for shapers.
Hi Mat, Thanks mate. No this machine does not have an offset linkage and there is no other way I can find to correct this. Does not seem to be an issue, I mostly feed left to right and if I have to go right to left I take very light cuts. I would be interested to hear from anyone else who has experience with this machine.
wow, nice machine, looks great honestly !
Nice job. Will leaving the cover off allow dirt/water into the new brgs?
I dont believe the cover did much.
